The Seventh Parliament of World s Religions in Toronto, Nov 1-7, 2018, drew more than eight thousand registrants from all over the globe. Media reports said attendees came from more than two hundred different religious and spiritual traditions. As one would expect, there were devotees from the largest religions - Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism - and then other smaller religions were also represented including African Traditional, Indigenous, Pagan and Zoroastrians. Once again as the proverbial saying goes, small in numbers but in contribution great, our Zoroastrian presence registered. Trustee and Vice President of the Board of the Council of the Parliament, Dolly Dastoor, had Zoroastrian registrants and volunteers revved up for a variety of sessions, displays and prominent keynote speakers. I would like to share two highlights that were Houston centric. Architect Cyrus Rivetna presented the beautiful model of the Houston Atashkadeh. This model was part of the Sacred Spaces exhibition on display in the main public area and generated a lot of interest. The other was the FEZANA Exhibition Booth. The booth showcased our Library collection of rare books, manuscripts, children s books, and FEZANA publications. A display of a haft-seen table with specially designed stickers to educate visitors about Nowruz was on display.

A video wall that featured a specially curated movie, Zoroastrianism: a lived and living faith, was looped with other Zoroastrian theme videos, including An Evening with FIRES. Arzan Wadia cites, The exhibit booth was a beacon for those who wanted to learn about our faith, and for some to quell their curiosity about meeting a practicing Zoroastrian. The booth graphics were designed by Zara Contractor, Leea Contractor and Anaheez Karbhari of Canada. The printing material was done gratis by Marzi Byramji of Regal Press, who unequivocally said that doing this was his way to support the community. The spirit of giving and sharing is alive in our community, and the exhibition booth was a testament to it. NATAK FUNDRAISER By Yasmin Pavri On December 1, ZAH held a fundraiser to kick off preparations for the North American Congress that will be held in Houston in December The very able writer/director/actor Kamalrukh Gandhi, created a hilarious farce titled Jerk-Xes the NOT so great, an irreverent parody on the famous Persian King Xerxes. The play opened with an endearing introduction by Naushad Mehta on how the parody was inspired by the very educational play written last year by our resident historical playwright Shanaz Sidhwa. In this subverted version of history, an old and mentally shaky Darius decides to leave the throne to his younger son Xerxes, who is a philanderer, rather than to the more stable older son Artobazanes. The casting was perfect, with Percy Katrak as the despicable King Jerk-Xes, Percy Master playing the hapless villain whose machinations unravel as always, and Shernaz Boomla lighting the stage up with her giddy desire to marry the king and eventually succeeding in gaining his affection. For me, the highlight of the show was the first ever appearance on stage by Hoshang Sethna, as the physical fitness trainer for the king! The supporting cast was excellent, and the audience roared its appreciation at their combined efforts. The play was followed by a scrumptious traditional Parsi wedding dinner catered by Naushad Mehta (obviously a man of many talents!) and served on banana leaves by the cast who not only worked hard on the play but also served as babarchis (servers) for the dinner. All the fun and food was for a good cause and we are grateful for all the hard work put in by the organizers to raise funds for the 2020 Congress. NAZC2020 FUNDRAISER ANOTHER ACCOUNT JERK-SIS, THE NOT SO GREAT A PARODY FROM SHAHNAME ON XERXES, THE GREAT By ZAH Natak Group It was Kamalrukh s dream to write and direct a parody from the Shahnameh, and this was realized on December 1, The NAZC2020 Fundraiser was kicked off by the opening of the parody play Jerk-Xes, the NOT so Great. Before we start talking about the Play, we would like to thank our Sponsors, Nazneen & Kershaw Khumbatta, Sillie & Jehanbux Mehta and Aban Rustomji for their consistent support for the Natak events. We would also like to thank Sarosh and Pearline Collector, who despite poor health came to see the play and gave a generous donation.

4 The play opened with an introduction by Naushad Mehta on how the parody was inspired by the very educational play written last year by our historical playwright Shanaz Sidhwa. After a few minutes Shahnaz joined Naushad who complained to her that his role in the play was downgraded to a chaprasi and that he wasn t happy about it at all. Shahnaz offered to fix it. If not the role of the King, she was able to get him a role of the adult Prince, Artobazanes. Young Artobazanes, played by Zubin Master, was a naughty kid and had no scruples about getting ahead in his young life. He even pushed little Cyrus, played by Cyrus Desai, to win a race. The young Darius, father of Artobazanes, was played by Darius Tamboli and the young mother Artayanta, was played by Mitra Khumbatta. Mitra was also the narrator. Darius manages to become the King of Persia. Years went by and time took a toll on Darius life. He became old - really old, and decides to name his successor. When Darius announced his decision to name Artobazanes, played by Naushad Mehta, as his successor, he and his mother Artayanta, played by Arnavaz Sethna, danced with joy, but, their euphoria was short-lived as Xerxes, the younger brother, a lover of wine, women and song, played by Percy Katrak, threw a fit and got the king to change his decision in his favor. Xerxes or Jerk-Xes crowned himself king and his mother Atossa, played by Shahnaz Sidhwa, was overjoyed. The new King soon announces his cabinet Artobazanes his goody goody brother, his college buddy Hayman, played by Percy Master, the hapless villain conniving to overthrow Xerxes and become the King himself. His accountant, Mordecai, played by Sheroy Haveliwalla, and his legal counsel Parysatis, played by Kamalrukh Gandhi. Xerxes soon met the love of his life, Vashti, played by Shernaz Boomla, a giddy flirtatious young girl, and married her making her the Queen. Her lady-inwaiting, Biluda, was played by Yasmin Medhora. The history unfolds and King Xerxes throws a royal banquet at which there was a guest, played by Noshir Medhora. Entertainment is brought in and two dancers Tenaz Sunavala and Khurshed Hormuzdi, dance away to the music of the starving sitar/guitar player, Darius Tamboli. At this banquet, the guest requests to see the queen and the King sends for her. The queen had her own party Biluda, Parysatis and Hira, a guest, played by Diana Balsara and so couldn t go to Xerxes court. Vashti was banished for disobeying the King. Time goes on and the king misses Vashti. He stays very depressed and the court work suffers. Finally, Hayman decides to find him another beautiful lady. A search for a young maiden leads them to Esther played by Persis Behramsha, a simple young girl, in charge of a herd of goats. Esther is being groomed by Biludi, played by Farzana Sidhwa to be presented to the King. When King Xerxes was told about Esther, he wants to be physically fit to receive her, and sends for his personal trainer. The guard, played by Yazad Sidhwa, pages the trainer, and in walks the trainer, played by Hoshang Sethna. Parysatis was able to expose Hayman when his conversation with her was recorded. The King is angry and tells the guard to tie up Hayman. He regrets very much for trusting Hayman and throwing Vashti out. He breaks off his engagement with Esther declaring that he still loves Vashti. Biludi makes a phone call to bring in the secret package. In walks Vashti with her retinue. King Xerxes and Queen Vashti are reunited and they lived happily ever after, at least in this version of history.

5 Some more pictures of the Play The entire play was made ready in a short space of just about 16 rehearsals. First, just the reading of the entire play a couple or three times, then only certain scenes were rehearsed and then from November right in earnest every weekend the entire play was rehearsed. The cast would meet, rehearse and then relax and have dinner which someone or the other had brought. Lyla Daroga set design, and Shernaz Bhandara costumes, started coming from mid-november. Chair covers were crafted and fixed on the chairs; outfits were tried and fitted for each character. Both, Lyla and Shernaz worked with the cast to the last detail headgear for male and tiaras for the queens. Even the two visiting mothers from Mumbai were put to work Perviz Katrak, Percy Katrak s mother and Vera Kotwal, Kamalrukh s mother were assigned to stitch some parts of the back drop. The Center was abuzz with activity. Stage set was by Aderbad Tamboli, audio by Khushrav Nariman and Box Office was managed by Manek Nariman. Back stage helpers were Jasmin Katrak and Yasmin Haveliwala. Hats off to our food coordinators Chef Naushad Mehta and Roshan & Yezdi Engineer. What a wonderful job of bringing food in an orderly manner without people waiting for the next item. The food was delicious and piping hot even when the seconds were served. The line of volunteers dressed in their lengo and sadra/white Tshirt served saria, achaar, rotli, papeta ma gosh, lagan na eeda, kolmi pulav and masala dal. For dessert, there was Parsi custard which was made by our truly valuable volunteers. Ice cream was also available. The custard was prepared by Nargis Cooper, Zarina Elavia, Roshan Engineer, Abby Erani, Dilshad Hormazdi, Jasmin Katrak, Nazneen Khumbatta, Delna Minwalla and Yasmin Medhora. The dinner was seated dinner with food put on banana leaves, washed and cleaned by an army of volunteers. The serving crew included the young and wanna be young crew. Diana Balsara, Persis Bhramsha, Shernaz and Ashtad Boomla, Yezdi & Roshan Engineer, Kamalrukh Gandhi, Percy & Jasmin Katrak, Percy and Zubin Master, Kayomarz, Farzana and Yazad Sidhwa, Tenaz and Farzad Sunavala, Darius Tamboli. The Raffle took off very well it yielded $1,010/-. Thank you very much Sillie & Jehanbux Mehta for donating the food hamper and making all the yummy goodies (2 dal pories, khatai, 5 batasas, bhakhras, wine bottle, cheese and jam). The winner of the grand prize was Yasmin Engineer. Four packages containing a wine bottle and a box of chocolates each was also given to winners Naozer Behramsha, Bakhtawar Byramji, Freny Rajkot and Bapsi Sidhwa. Also thanks to all those who attended and Kayo Sidhwa, Nargis Cooper, Yasmin Medhora and other volunteers who helped sell the tickets. Thanks very much to Ronnie & Elvia Patel, Yasmin & Shapur Pavri, Nali & Danesh Desai and Sanober & Aderbad Tamboli who were the highest bidders of the Silent Auction and fetched $575/-. Special thanks to the Chefs who prepared the food items. Four food baskets were prepared with cooked meals for a week for two people. Each basket had a Cook Book and the following food items made by various volunteers:

Sarosh Collector Honored. By Yazad Sidhwa The ZAH Youth Group Members, Teachers and Mentors came up with an idea to do something very special for our dear Sarosh Uncle. We decided to write to his former ZAH Sunday school students and requested for quotes, notes and photographs from them to create a book to express to him how he has impacted all our lives and how he has shaped us who we are today. Once we received them, we got together over a couple of weekends and prepared a nice book full of heartfelt messages and some great memories with those photos. The Middle Group members also participated in this initiative and made some cards during their lock-in. We got to know a couple of days ago that Sarosh Uncle would be attending the ZAH Fundraiser on Dec 1st so we invited all the students present to come up on stage and honored him by presenting the Book that day. He was very appreciative and thanked us all including Pearline Aunty for always being by his side. Thank you Sarosh Uncle for all that you have done and do for us and we pray to Ahura Mazda that you get well soon and keep good health.

We have set up a link on our website for your convenience so please visit the website and contribute towards this noble cause. This is a great opportunity to leave your legacy at our Center for your kids and grandkids and we need EVERYONE to be a part of this great program. We urge you to either: a. Rothko Chapel 34 th Annual Thanksgiving Service at Rothko Chapel Zoroastrian representation As background, the service started 34 years ago in response to the bombing of a storefront mosque. After helping to raise money to support the mosque s repairs, the Annual Thanksgiving Service co-founders, George Atkinson and Garland Pohl, wanted to find a way for different faith organizations to come together, as thanksgiving is a common value shared by all the major world religions. This service is held every year, typically a week before the Thanksgiving Day at The Rothko Chapel located at 3900 Yupon at Sul Ross, so if anyone is interested to attend please feel free to do so. This event is free and open to all, no registration required. The Zarathushti Community of Houston has been an integral part of this event almost since its inception. The creation of the event is a milestone in the development of interfaith dialogue in Houston and continues to bring all faiths together. Vehishta Kaikobad, Ervad Yazad K. Sidhwa and Kaemerz Dotiwala THE UPCOMING BIOGRAPHY OF DASTUR KOTWAL WITH ARTICLES VOLUME 1 The Collected Scholarly Works of Dastur Firoze M. Kotwal', Vol. 1, is being released shortly. The first part of the book contains Dasturji s biography in great detail accompanied by 81 images and the second part of the book has articles on various topics of the faith, as written by Dasturji. The volume provides substantial insight into the life of a Zoroastrian High Priest and our Zoroastrian practices. For priests, lay-people and academics, this volume provides a resource for the future study of the faith. Its exploration both in time span and in its detail reveals the choices that lie ahead for the community, which Zarathushtra so pertinently articulated in the Gathas, three thousand five hundred years ago - the clear choice which is to be made between good and evil and between the better and the best The book is a limited print edition.
