2 Top: introduction of the Panelists and above: Introduction of Chat Stars Mama School Principal Furengeez Tampal attended a panel discussion at the ICAP on Women s Day last year, which was moderated by our alumna Khursheed Kotwal. This inspired her to have such an event at the School. This dream of Mrs Tampal came to fruition on Thursday 25 th October 2018 when Khursheed gave the outgoing Matric and Cambridge classes a well applauded and memorable career symposium. Khursheed is the first female Pakistani to have her own Financial and Management Consultancy, prior to which she was the Corporate Finance Director at Unilever Pakistan. Over a 3-month period she scouted for star alumnae in various fields. Her daring caption/vision (above) for the Symposium led her to seek out high achievers in diverse fields, despite facing last minute drop-outs due job commitments / sudden illness in families etc. The Symposium had two sessions: Panel Discussion and One-to-One Chat. The Panelist were: Neurovascular Neuro-physician (Dr Ayesha Kamal), Founder and Curator of Canvas Art Gallery (Sameera Raja), Transformational HR Expert (Pouru Sidhwa), Partner of Deloitte Adil Yousuf (Hena Sadiq), Multi-faceted Corporate Executive (Khushnuma Engineer), Writer (Hafsa Ahsan) and near-nonagenarian visiting alumna from Hong Kong, Mani Vachha. Gulnaz Mondegarian as Master of Ceremony conducted the event skillfully. She introduced the Panelists and endorsed their high achievement, but when Khursheed moderated the programme what came forth was more brilliant. Each one s journey was inspiring in its unique way, and the audience often broke into energetic applause. Their bold

3 encouragement to the students in face of male domination, tempered by gentle approach by our near-nonagenarian Mani was very balancing. In fact, Mani Aunty was a great hit! She was an inspiration for us all, remarked Gulnaz. Mani Vachha herself said, It brought back nostalgic memories and was an extremely exhilarating experience talking to the students. The other panelists also said, it was a pleasure interacting with the young girls. Very emotional moment for me (to be back in School and talking about my life). Truly emotional, validating and inspiring! One-to-One Chat: Wanting to give the maximum benefit in permissible time, Khursheed also conceived another segment where Chat Stars were also briefly introduced on stage. They were: Chartered Accountant (Rohan Mehri), Artist/Art Promoter (Masuma Halai Khawaja), Chemical Pathologist (Humaira Ali), Remedial Teacher (Sofia Kasim), Engineer (Shayan Farrukh), Pediatrician (Dr Khujista Effandi) and Lieutenant in Pakistan Navy (Beenish Ashfaq) Students chatted with these alumnae as well as the panelists in small groups. The keen engagement and movement from group to group by the students confirmed that this segment was equally inspiring for them. The Stars themselves remarked thank you for choosing us. It was a great honour to connect with the future stars. It was an honour to be a part of such a wonderful programme. Sunnu Golwalla was requested by the Principal to balance the career inspirations with a brief talk on Good Life. The key take-away were to value the right things in life, be the best you, you can be, and be meaningfully involved in the life of others, to have a happy and fulfilling life. The students want such a symposium every year being inspired by the first-hand success stories of their own Mamaians. The alumnae are equally keen to give their best back to the School. What a fulfilling experience for all who participated. No problems for the first few stop: a few people got on, a few got off, and things went generally well. At the next stop, however, a big hulk of a guy got on. Six feet eight, built like a wrestler, arms hanging down to the ground. He glared at the driver and said, "Big John doesn't need to pay!" and sat down at the back. The driver was five feet three, thin, and basically meek. Naturally, he didn't argue with Big John, but he wasn't happy about it. The next day the same thing happened: Big John got on again, made a show of refusing to pay, and sat down. And the next day, and the one after that and so forth. This grated on the bus driver, who started losing sleep over the way Big John was taking advantage of him. Finally, he could stand it no longer. He signed up for body building courses, karate, judo, and all that good stuff. By the end of the summer, he had become quite strong. What's more, he Felt really good about himself. So next Monday, when Big John once again got on the bus and said, "Big John doesn't pay!" The driver stood up, glared back at

7 the passenger, and screamed, "And why not?" With a surprised look on his face, Big John replied, "Big John has a bus pass." OUR FAITH Faith Works Wonder Dasturji Dhalla s Homage unto Ahura Mazda Faith is the belief in the unknown, as belief is the faith in the known. Faith soars the highest heaven and dives to the deepest depth. Faith knows no bound and breaks through all barriers. Faith reads the secrets of the earth and deciphers the mysteries of heaven. Faith knows all and sees all. Faith asks not for facts, demands not proofs, and seeks no evidence. Faith thinks not, cogitates not and reasons not. Faith believes and believes wholly and unreservedly. Faith knows no "No"; it knows only "Yes". Faith makes the weak strong and the timid brave. Faith heals, faith creates, and faith moves mountains. Faith is power, a talisman that works wonders. anything and everything. Faith is assertive and aggressive, authoritative and arbitrary, adamantine and unreasonable, static and firm as a rock. Credulity is faith's failing and with credulity for its companion, faith believes what is possible and impossible, credible and incredible, Omnipotent is faith, but not eternal. Faith is secure when reason is asleep. The child is angelic, for it knows not guilt and is shadowed not by sin. But the child does not always remain the child. With the breaking of the dawn of its mind, it ceases to be child. So is the childlike faith roused by reason and disturbed by doubt. Doubt is active, it seeks and ventures and risks. It lets not faith take everything on trust, it questions it at every turn and lets it not rest in the passivity of belief. Doubt, in its struggle, spells death of faith. When doubt assails me and faith grows dim and fails me, lead me, Ahura Mazda, from destructive doubt to reasoned faith. Let my faith be wedded to reason and let it be based on conviction. Give me faith and more faith, but not the blind faith. Give me the seeing and discerning faith of thy Armaiti and save me from the weakness of a credulous mind. O Vahishta Manah, Thou Best Mind.
