1 St. John s Anglican Church Lunenburg, Nova Scotia RECTOR S MESSAGE A warm welcome as we gather as a parish family to give thanks for God s many blessings. We have so much to be thankful for in this great country we call home Canada! Holy Scripture reminds us to give thanks for God s blessings and to share our abundance with those in need. It is always a delight to see the dory, Little Sister filled to the gunnels at Thanksgiving. The dory is a reminder of God s generosity and our responsibility to give a portion of our abundance to those who are less fortunate. Jesus points out how God beautifully clothes the flowers of the field and cares for the birds of the air. Then he adds how much more our heavenly Father cares for us, saying. But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." Do we really believe this? If so, how does it impact the way we live, work, build society and the economy into the Kingdom of God. What are our priorities in life? Where do we put our time and energy? Thanksgiving reminds us of what is most important in life. The medieval mystic, Meister Eckhart wrote profound words that speak to us today. If the only prayer you said in your whole life was, "thank you," that would suffice. Let us celebrate Thanksgiving 2015 with grateful hearts that overflow in grateful living. Have a great Thanksgiving. 2 The Holy Eucharist Sung Setting Mass of Creation by Marty Haugen, Prelude: Harvest Home - Lloyd The Gathering of the Community Please stand for Processional Hymn Hymn #262 Come, Ye Thankful People, Come Celebrant The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. All And also with you. All Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Glory To God Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly king, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. We welcome to the Assembly the members of the Sunday School. Jesus says: I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you. Whirl Welcome Song Everybody sing hello hello. Everybody sing hello hello Everybody take the time to say hello hello, It s Hosanna-na, hosanna-na, hosanna-na, hosanna-na-na, hosanna in the highest. Everybody clap hello hello.... Everybody stomp hello hello. 3 Children s Prayer: Thank you God for all that you give us in this life. May we praise you by serving others. Amen. The Collect of the Day Celebrant The community prays silently. The celebrant then says the collect Creator of the fruitful earth, you made us stewards of all things. Give us grateful hearts for all your goodness, and steadfast wills to use your bounty well, that the whole human family, today and in generations to come, may with us give thanks for the riches of your creation. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen. The Proclamation of the Word A READING FROM THE BOOK OF JOEL Do not fear, O soil; be glad and rejoice, for the Lord has done great things! Do not fear, you animals of the field, for the pastures of the wilderness are green; the tree bears its fruit, the fig tree and vine give their full yield. O children of Zion, be glad and rejoice in the Lord your God; for he has given the early rain for your vindication, he has poured down for you abundant rain, the early and the later rain, as before. The threshing floors shall be full of grain, the vats shall overflow with wine and oil. I will repay you for the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent against you. You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, who has dealt wondrously with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame. You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I, the Lord, am your God and there is no other. And my people shall never again be put to shame. JOEL 2:21-27 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM 126 When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, then were we like those who dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy. R Then they said among the nations, "The Lord has done great things for them." The Lord has done great things for us, and we are glad indeed. R Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like the watercourses of the Negev. Those who sowed with tears will reap with songs of joy. Those who go out weeping, carrying the seed, will come again with joy, shouldering their sheaves. R 4

3 A READING FROM THE FIRST LETTER OF PAUL TO TIMOTHY First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all Godliness and dignity. This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God; there is also one mediator between God and humankind, Christ Jesus, himself human, who gave himself a ransom for all - this was attested at the right time. For this I was appointed a herald and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. 1 TIMOTHY 2:1-7 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Hymn #261 God, Whose Farm Is All Creation Gospel The Lord be with you. People And with your Spirit. THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MATTHEW. People Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus said, "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you - you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear?' For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." MATTHEW 6:25-33 The Gospel of Christ. Praise to your Lord, Jesus Christ. Sermon 5 Archdeacon Michael The Apostles Creed We give thanks for our faith, as we say, I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Anglican Cycle of Prayer: Pray for Tamale - (Ghana, West Africa) The Rt Revd Dr Jacob Ayeebo. Let us give thanks to God our Father, always and for everything, saying, We thank you, Lord. For the beauty and wonder of creation, We thank you, Lord. For all that is gracious in the lives of men and women, revealing the image of Christ, We thank you, Lord. For our daily food, our homes, families and friends, We thank you, Lord. For minds to think and hearts to love, We thank you, Lord. For health, strength, and skill to work, and for leisure to rest and play, We thank you, Lord. For those who are brave and courageous, patient in suffering and faithful in adversity and for all on the road to recovery, We thank you, Lord. For all who pursue peace, justice, and truth, and for all who help the unemployed, support refugees, food banks and outreach programs. We thank you, Lord. We give thanks for our Canadian Thanksgiving, for the abundance of the land, the sea and the forests and for a right use of our resources. We thank you, Lord. 6

4 We give thanks for all who are running for office in the Federal Election. Bless our discernment as we choose a government to lead this great Nation of Canada. We thank you, Lord. Accept, O Lord, our thanks and praise for all you have done for us. Confession and Absolution Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; God welcomes sinners and invites them to the table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God s forgiveness. Silence is kept. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen. Celebrant Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon + and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. The Peace All stand, and the celebrant addresses the people. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. The assembly greets one another. The Celebration of the Eucharist The Preparation of the Gifts Offertory Hymn #258 We Plough the Fields Representatives of the parish present the gifts of bread and wine for the Eucharist. Each one as they are able, makes an offering to the Lord for the needs and responsibilities of the Church to be placed on the altar. The Prayer Over The Gifts Read by celebrant Source of all life, the heaven and earth are yours, yet you have given us dominion over all things. Receive the symbols of our labour and love which we offer you this day, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer One for Creation Mass of Creation - Marty Haugen The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. God of power and might, you spoke the Word and all that is in heaven and on the earth, all things came to be. Your Spirit hovered over the primal elements and you brought forth forms of life innumerable; including this fragile earth, and us amongst its inhabitants. As our past is in you, so our hope for the future rests with you. As we have turned from your way, so we turn again to the warmth of your love. Through you all things are brought to new life. Therefore with all creation, we praise you Lord, with all the angels, in their song of joy. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power, God of might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. In the night that Jesus was betrayed, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread and gave thanks and broke it to speak to us of the breaking of his body upon the cross. He gave the bread to his friends and said, Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Jesus then took the cup of wine, gave thanks and poured it out to speak to us of the pouring out of his blood. He gave the wine to his friends saying: Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for all creation for the forgiveness of sins. Every time you drink of the wine, do this in remembrance of me. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith. Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. 2X Therefore, remembering the reconciliation of all creation achieved by the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, we offer you this bread and this wine. Let his perfect sacrifice reconcile us with you, with one another and with all of creation. In the power of your grace make us ministers of your reconciling love. 7 8

5 In Christ life once broken, split and buried, sprang to life again. Now as we wait in confidence for his coming again, keep us alive in the new life and reconciliation he has won for us. Make one what is broken, restore what is spilled and renew all creation in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Send upon this bread and wine, upon us and all creation, the life-giving Spirit who first moved upon the waters of the deep. Stir up in us what is creative, redeem what is destructive. Unite us with you in the body of your Son by whom, with whom and in whom, in the unity of your Creative Spirit, with all that has been, is, and will be in your universe, we stand before you and worship you, God of all, in songs of everlasting praise. Through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory is yours almighty Father, now and forever. Amen. The Lord s Prayer In a spirit of gratitude for God s many blessings, let us pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread The celebrant breaks the consecrated bread for distribution, and says Creator of all, you gave us golden fields of wheat, whose many grains we have gathered and made into this one bread. So may your Church be gathered from the ends of the earth into your kingdom. The celebrant invites the people to share in communion. The gifts of God for the People of God. All Thanks be to God. The Communion Jesus Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Jesus Bread of life, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Jesus Prince of Peace you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Jesus Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us your peace. The sacrament is given with the following words. The body of Christ (given for you). Amen. The blood of Christ (shed for you). Amen. 9 Communion Hymns #49 Draw Near and Take ; #62 Come, Let Us Eat St. John s Ringers: With Thankful Hearts - D. Doxology Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. 6 Stewardship Corner Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow. - Melody Beattie NOTICES FOOD BANK Thank you for your generous donations placed in the dory Little Sister as well as the monetary donations.
