1 Fifth Sunday of Lent March 13, 2016 St. John s Anglican Church Lunenburg, Nova Scotia Rector: Archdeacon Michael H. Mitchell To all who mourn or need comfort To all who are weary and need rest, To all who seek friendship, To all who desire to grow in relationship with God To all who yearn to pray, To all who need a Saviour, And to all whoever will worship, This Church of St. John s opens wide its doors and in the name of Christ our Lord, says - WELCOME. Rector s Message Welcome to St. John s on this Fifth Sunday in Lent. This summer, Canadians and people the world over will be watching the Summer Olympics being held in Brazil. The stories of sacrifice, determination and striving for excellence inspires us all. The commitment of athletes can be a powerful call to Christians in the way we live our faith. Are we as committed to fully living our faith, as these athletes are in becoming the best they can be? St. Paul certainly believed that Christians must put their whole heart, soul, mind and body into serving God. He calls us to run the race and fight the good fight. Today we hear of Mary, the faithful disciple who washes the feet of Jesus and anoints his feet with costly perfume. Mary serves as a model for all disciples, as she puts aside human pride and sacrifices a year s salary to purchase of this costly perfume. In her generosity, she anoints the feet of Jesus as the other disciples look on in amazement. It is Judas the one who has oft-lined his purse with money from the community of disciples who objects to such extravagance. Judas uses the poor for his own greed. Jesus reminds him and us, that there will always be the poor who need our help and assistance. At this moment, Jesus needs the gift of this loving anointing in preparation for his death. The other scriptures for today call us to forget the past and to focus on what God is doing in the present. Let us enter into this fifth week of Lent with an open heart, ready to serve God as we are able. 2 The Holy Eucharist The Gathering of the Community Prelude: When I Survey the Wondrous Cross - Willan Please stand for Processional Hymn Hymn #345 King of Glory, King of Peace Celebrant The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. And also with you. Celebrant Almighty God, All to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. CHILDREN'S TIME AND CHILDREN'S HYMN Were You There - Negro spiritual 1. Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they crucified my Lord? 2. Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? Sending Forth Prayer with Children The Collect of the Day Celebrant Let us pray. The community prays silently. The celebrant then says the collect. Merciful Lord, give us generous hearts like Mary who anointed the feet of your Son, that we may serve you in all whom we meet. Cleansed from all our sins, may we serve you with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. 3 The Proclamation of the Word A READING FROM THE BOOK OF ISAIAH Thus says the Lord, who makes a way in the sea, a path in the mighty waters, who brings out chariot and horse, army and warrior; they lie down, they cannot rise, they are extinguished, quenched like a wick: Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. The wild animals will honour me, the jackals and the ostriches; for I give water in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give drink to my chosen people, the people whom I formed for myself so that they might declare my praise. ISAIAH 43:16-21 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM 126 When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, then were we like those who dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy. R Then they said among the nations, "The Lord has done great things for them." The Lord has done great things for us, and we are glad indeed. R Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like the watercourses of the Negev. Those who sowed with tears will reap with songs of joy. Those who go out weeping, carrying the seed, will come again with joy, shouldering their sheaves. R A READING FROM THE LETTER OF PAUL TO THE PHILIPPIANS If anyone else has reason to be confident in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, a member of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee, as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. Yet whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ. More than that, I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and I regard them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but one that comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God based on faith. I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his death, if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my 4

3 own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead. I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus. PHILIPPIANS 3:4B-14 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gradual Hymn 174 Eternal Lord of Love, Behold Your Church All stand for the Gospel. Reader The Lord be with you. People And also with you. THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO JOHN People Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at the table with him. Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus' feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, "Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?" (He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) Jesus said, "Leave her alone. She bought it so that she might keep it for the day of my burial. You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have mej.o" HN 12:1-8 The Gospel of Christ. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Sermon Archdeacon Michael The Apostles Creed Let us confess the faith of our baptism. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. 5 I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The Prayers of the People Please kneel or sit for the prayers. Response: Lord, have mercy. (sung) Anglican Cycle of Prayer: Pray for Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui, The Most Revd Dr Paul Kwong, Archbishop of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui & Bishop of Hong Kong Island. Diocesan Cycle: Pray for the Parish of Canso, Rev Sue Channan, Priest-in-Charge and Bob; Parish of Three Harbours, Rev Channen and Bob MacMillan. Local Ministerial: The Congregation of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church and Rev d Rick Pryce and Deborah. Fisheries: Adams & Knickle - Cachalot 1; Clearwater - Atlantic Protector. Confession and Absolution Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; he welcomes sinners and invites them to his table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God s forgiveness. Silence is kept. Most merciful God, All we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen. Celebrant Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon + and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 6

4 The Peace All stand, and the presiding celebrant addresses the people. The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you. The assembly greets one another in the name of the Lord. The Celebration of the Eucharist The Preparation of the Gifts Offertory Hymn #386 When I Survey the Wondrous Cross Representatives of the parish present the gifts of bread and wine for the Eucharist. Each one as they are able, makes an offering to the Lord for the needs and responsibilities of the Church to be placed on the altar. The Prayer over the Gifts Read by celebrant God of compassion and forgiveness who looks upon the generous service of your people, receive our offering this day, and make us one with him who is our peace, Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen. The Great Thanksgiving - Eucharistic Prayer 3 The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Preface for Lent Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of heaven and earth; we give you thanks and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord, who was tempted in every way, yet did not sin. By his grace we are able to triumph over every evil, and to live no longer for ourselves alone, but for him who died for us and rose again. Therefore with angels and archangels and all who have served you in every age, we raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name. #689 Holy, Holy, holy Lord, God of power and might. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. 7 We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for the goodness and love you have made known to us in creation; in calling Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Saviour and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, a death he freely accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith. Dying you destroyed our death. Rising you restored our life. Lord Jesus, come in glory. We offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of the new covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we, made acceptable in him, may be sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make them new, and bring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and for ever. People Amen. (Sung) The Lord s Prayer Let us pray to our Father to forgive us as we are ready to forgive, singing, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. 8

5 Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread The celebrant breaks the consecrated bread for distribution, and says: We break this bread, Communion in Christ s body once broken. Let your Church be the wheat which bears its fruit in dying. If we have died with him, we shall live with him; if we hold firm, we shall reign with him. The celebrant invites the people to share in communion and may say, The gifts of God for the People of God. People Thanks be to God. The Communion #690 Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy upon us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy upon us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: grant us peace, grant us peace. The celebrant and people then receive communion. The sacrament is given with the following words. The body of Christ (given for you). The blood of Christ (shed for you). The communicant responds each time, Amen. This community of faith, welcomes to the Lord s table all who are baptized and who wish to be nourished with the Body and Blood of Christ. During Communion, hymns may be sung, silence may be kept. Communion Hymn #516 Dear Lord, We Long to See Your Face Announcements Prayer after Communion Celebrant Let us pray Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us that what we do for the least of our brothers and sisters we do also for you: give us the will to be the servant of others as you were the servant of all, and gave up your life and died for us, but are alive and reign, now and for ever. Amen. Doxology Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen. Blessing & Dismissal The love of the Lord Jesus draw you to himself, the power of the Lord Jesus strengthen you in his service, the joy of the Lord Jesus fill your hearts; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, + the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God. Recessional Hymn #200 We Sing the Praise of Him Who Died Postlude: We Bless Thee, Jesus Christ Our Lord - J. S. Call the Parish office if you desire baptism for an adult or child. SUNDAY SCHOOL/NURSERY - EASTER SUNDAY There will be no Sunday School or Nursery classes on Easter Sunday, March 27th so as to allow all leaders to attend church service with their families on this most important worship Sunday. This being the fourth Sunday of the month, is Family Service, and our Sunday School will participate in the service as usual with their assigned duties. Weather permitting, we hope to have an Easter Egg Hunt around the Church Courtyard that day and for safety purposes, we request that the parents of the very young children assist us outside keeping watch over tiny tots. This will not be necessary if there is inclement weather and subsequently, we decide to move the event to the Parish Hall. 9 10
