1 A publication of Richland United Methodist Church - 60 Pomeroy Rd. - Athens, Ohio Pentecost, the Birthday of the Church The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit. - Romans 8:11 We are currently in the church season of Eastertide. This is the 50 days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost Sunday. At Pentecost God blessed us with the gift of the Holy Spirit, promised by Jesus in many scriptures, including Mark 1:8; Luke 4:18-19, 7:39; and Acts 1:5-8. Pentecost marks the occasion of God s sending the Holy Spirit upon Jesus disciples after his resurrection and ascension. Before Pentecost, the disciples were unsure of what they were to do next, and spent most of their time in hiding. After Pentecost they understood their mission to spread the Good News of Jesus, and they had the courage to come out of hiding and speak openly about who Jesus was, and what he had accomplished by his dying and rising. Because Pentecost brought the disciples this clarity of mission, it is regarded as the birthday of the Church. Before Pentecost, the disciples of Jesus were tentative and disorganized. After Pentecost, they were a people with a mission (If you would like to know more about the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and the Church s first days, you might consider reading the book of Acts this summer). This Pentecost season we will be studying the many attributes of the Holy Spirit, found in the fruit (1 Corinthians 12:7-11) and gifts (Isaiah 11:1-2) of the Holy Spirit, and the power of those gifts to both draw people together, and to send them forth to spread the Word. As we celebrate the Pentecost season, may tongues of flame remind us of our Triune God, and all that He has already done and continues to do for us today. Let us come and learn the many gifts that God has given to all humanity in the third person of the Trinity. Yours in the Lord, ~

Come and enjoy a stringed ensemble, music from our own Praise Band and Choir, as well as special selections from JW Smith and Yvonne Crist (and remember to wear red, orange and/or yellow). 6 Needed: Bibles and Christian Books Kristina G. is collecting new and used Bibles and Christian books for an organization that sends Christian literature to over 40 countries in Africa. By doing a little spring cleaning, you can bless church members, children, seminary students, and pastors in another country. Recent wind damage is making it necessary to replace the gutters and downspouts on the driveway side of the sanctuary. For just $20 you can buy a foot of replacement gutter and downspout. We encourage you to buy several feet while in the gutter. Once sufficient funds have been raised we can all climb out of the gutter together. If we sell too many feet we will apply the surplus to replacing the gutters and downspouts on the other side of the sanctuary. Thanks and God bless, Dave Col.
