3 421 St. Aloysius R. C. Church The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Joseph Page Three Fr. Ben s Reflection One day when my brothers and I were in our late teens and early twenties, my father came back from the school where he was working as a school teacher, asking us "Are you guys feeling unworthy of your father who is still a regular school teacher?" We somehow understood that he was referring to himself as not being a headmaster or school principal yet. We never thought about it in the way our father was going through with his midlife challenge. Now, I am far advanced in age than the year my father was struggling with. I have met many fathers who were struggling in their capacities and their wishes under fulfilled. My mother was always complimented by many people for the reasons that she was successful in raising her high achieving four boys. Many mothers around her consulted her in a hope of getting wisdom and lessons on how to raise children in a successful way. Her answer was always humble and simple. "I opened my morning in prayers while fixing breakfast and wrapping lunch boxes for my boys just like any other mother. And I close my day in thanksgiving to God for bringing my husband and boys back home safe." Thinking back, we did not know what our mother's daily house labor meant. Now, for knowing that not every mother is successful with her dreams for the children, I am simply appreciative of her for being a mother of prayers and for being a mother of love. St. Joseph and Mary, being Jewish parents, raised the child just like any other mother in a hope that their child could possibly be the Messiah. I am sure they did not realize what the fate of the Messiah was. Jesus' heavenly Father made them the parents of the Messiah by taking over the responsibilities of keeping the family safe and secure, and by undergoing the passion of her Son. Especially, Mary, who was the co-pilgrim of her Son's passion, learned to be the mother of her Son and learned to be the mother of her Son's followers. We Catholics are the brothers of Jesus. We all inherited His own parents to be ours. We have our own physical parents and are privileged to having the parents of Jesus as ours. Being children of our parents, we do not remember every detail of our childhood. We all know that our parents are not saints. Yet, what we remember about them now, whether they are alive or deceased, is that they love us. For those who do not have good parental figures, remember that you still have the loving parents who are the father and mother of Jesus. Jesus shares his life with us. In it He also shares St. Joseph and Our Lady as our parents. God Bless You All!!! Korean Community Advent Recollection Peace, Fr. 6 421 St. Aloysius R. C. Church December 30, 2018 Page Six As the Parish Social Ministry Director, I would like to extend my sincere words of gratitude to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, to our parishioners and to the different Great Neck organizations - the Great Neck schools, Great Neck Library, Alert Fire Company, Temple Beth-El, and many out of town organizations and schools, for their generous donations of food, clothing, toys and gift cards during the past Christmas season. It's inspiring to see so many community members, especially young children, and different groups working together to help us make this world a better place. You help us to be beacons of hope for the Great Neck community. Special thanks also to the many volunteers from SVDP, from the Parish, Sister Margaret, and to the volunteers from other parishes, who helped us make a special Christmas for the people we serve. You all choose to give up your personal time and energy and expend it to help others whether it is picking up donations, sorting, stacking and distributing food and gifts, etc. The Christmas holidays are always a busy time for us and your help has proved to be invaluable. Your commitment and support are greatly appreciated. On behalf of the people we serve, the needy and disadvantaged of the Great Neck community, I would like to thank all of you for hearing the cry of the poor in our community and being present to those who need and depend on us. God bless you all for your generosity. A Happy & Blessed New Year to all! Bertha del Carpio Director, Parish Social Ministry
