1 OUR SAVIOUR S LUTHERAN CHURCH It is the beginning of a new year. Will you celebrate the occasion with friends, or champagne, or resolutions, or all three? With the beginning of a new year we like to think of a new start, of a new beginning for more than just our calendar. We hope for something new. In the last book of the Bible Jesus speaks to John in a vision and says Behold, I make all things new. (Revelation 21:5) And I think this must be what we are looking for. New Year. New calendar. New start!?! Is that what it is? Is the 1 st of January a new start? A do-over? Or do we just wish for something different? When we get to the end of the year, or the beginning of the next, we usually gather. It may be a New Years Eve party, or it may be a gathering to watch a college football game, or it may even be at church, but we gather. We celebrate the changing of the calendar somehow. Do you make resolutions? If so, how long did you keep them? What is it about the new calendar that makes us think of starting over? The new year gets us thinking about doing better, being better, looking better, and etc. In the movie Forrest Gump, staring Tom Hanks, the main character (Forrest Gump) and his friend Lt. Dan are at a New Year s eve party ringing in the year One of their friends says, in a forlorn sort of way, while looking off into the distance Don't you just love new year's? You can start all over. Everybody gets a second chance. (Lt. Dan s friend Lenore, in the movie Forrest Gump, 1994) Whether we intend to or not, it seems the new year invites us to take stock of our selves and our lives. And too often that highlights the hopes, dreams, expectations and longings for last year that were unfulfilled. So we try again and resolve to do/be/live better. It is into this reality for all of us that Jesus speaks; Behold, I make all things new. (Revelation 21:5) For me, the biggest part of that reminder is the I. God says I am the one that makes things new. God does this. In the beginning of a new year, in our desire for a new start, and even our desire for another chance to do/be/live better, we need the reminder. God comes along side us and works in and through us to make things new. Not just for us, but the world. A new chance, or a fresh start, or a new resolution may be the way we talk about it. And God says Behold, I make all things new. (Revelation 21:5) THANKS BE TO GOD! Happy New Year! Peaceinallplaces,<>< Pastor Jeff

2 Page 2 Council Corner December, 2018 The Roadrunner Your church Council has been working hard on the budget for 2019, restructuring the financial reporting and updating our constitution. This month, due to meeting schedules and the holidays, the Council met after the printing of the newsletter. So the Council Corner is a bit more vacant corner of the newsletter this month. Don t forget the annual meeting of the congregation will be Sunday, January 27, and there will be one worship gathering that day. You can expect twice the update next month. Happy New Year. Report respectfully submitted, OSLC Church Council Music Ministry Extending the hand of fellowship to each other, Tucson, and the world. As I write this we have just finished a meaningful Advent season and we have welcomed the Christ child with beautiful music and inspiring worship. Providing all of the music that we have just presented is no small task. It takes months of planning, rehearsing, teaching and practicing. It takes long hours and dedication. Thanks to all our musicians for their commitment to excellence and to their willingness to spend hours each week at church practicing. To all those who helped set up, cook, clean up, and serve at music function receptions and meals, thank you! As we rest this month and recover from the work of our labors, we do so with thankful and full hearts. Grace and Peace and Happy New Year to you and yours! Susan Wilson Minister of Music

ELCA Pastor Richard Andersen, Executive Director of Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center in Carefree AZ, will again guide us through an exploration of what God is calling us to do in our lives. This session will focus on our purposeful, value-based intent to follow our vocational path which may change over as we approach our third chapters. A special session on Luther s understanding of vocation will be presented during the Sunday Forum at 10:15 am before the workshop begins at 11:30 am (all activities are in the Activity Building). A light lunch will be provided. We will end with a Vespers service so as to conclude by 5 pm. More details will appear in the Sunday bulletins. See Glenn Schrader [glschraderdc@aol.com or ] to register by January 15. This retreat is open to all you do NOT have to have attended the previous retreat! EX Libris OSLC by Glenn Schrader In preparation for the January Abundant Aging retreat, you might want to check out several of the excellent books that have been written in recent years about vocational calls. A short but excellent introduction to Luther s thoughts is Listen! God is Calling: Luther Speaks of Vocation, Faith, and Work (part of the Lutheran Voices series by Augsburg Press, 2003) by D. Michael Bennethum. A more recent and longer related book is Martin Luther and the Called Life by Mark Tranvik (Fortress Press, 2016) which was part of our Reformation Book Store purchase last year. Finally, for a deeper perspective, see Edward Hahnenberg s Awakening Vocation (Liturgical Press, 2010) which addresses many challenging questions such as: Does God have a plan for each of us, or is it more like general guidelines for all of us? How do my gifts and abilities, my personality and particular circumstances, impact my vocation? What is the role of the church in this process? What are the needs of the world that call us to respond? (Note that there are no books required for the workshop.)

The office will be busy working on the Annual Report and prepping for the Annual Meeting this month. For those of you that will be submitting something for the Annual Report, please do so immediately if you have not already. As some of you may have already noticed, Stucco work has begun on the OSLC campus. It will be great to see the amazing improvements and I look forward to much more throughout the year. The office is currently in need of a volunteer for Thursday afternoons. Duties would include answering phones, stuffing bulletins, making copies, and assisting OSLC staff with small projects. If you are interested in volunteering in the church office, please contact me for more information. If you know someone that may be interested in volunteering, please encourage them to contact me or feel free to provide me with their contact information so that I may reach out to them.
