The English word Advent is derived from the Latin verb advenire, to come. Advent has to do with the Lord s coming to us. The Lord has come to us (at the birth of Christ), continues to come to us through the power of the Holy Spirit, will come to us again bodily at the end of this age. Advent is a time to reflect upon all of the ways past, present, future in which the Lord enters into our lives our world. Please remember that the purpose of Advent is not to imagine ourselves to be living at the time immediately preceding Christ s birth so somehow pretend that we are waiting for him to be born. Neither is the purpose of Advent to think sentimental thoughts about the baby Jesus. There is no real spiritual power in any of this.instead, the purpose of Advent is to pray for the coming of the Lord to learn how to wait for him. During Advent we remember his first coming how he kept his promises to his people in the Hebrew Scriptures. Because he was faithful long ago, we can be assured he will remain faithful to the end. Dwelling on God's faithfulness during Advent is a way of enriching strengthening our faith. In addition, we also pray for a greater experience of his presence in our lives today. For this reason, Advent is a great time to begin a new practice of prayer, setting aside time for the Lord in our daily lives. And, finally, Advent is a season to consider (or consider again) Jesus' promises to return to us in bodily form. On that day, he will powerfully graciously deliver us from all evil, overthrow his enemies, wipe away every tear. In this way, Advent is a time where we foster cultivate our ability to faithfully expectantly wait for the Lord's return. Let us worship! (Adapted from Rev. Jeff Meyers) Unless otherwise noted, all Scripture quotations are from The Holy Bible, English Stard Version (ESV ), copyright 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. 3 REFLECTION QUOTES The Schofield Kid : [Crying] It don't seem real... how he ain't gonna never breathe again, ever... how he's dead. And the other one too. All on account of pulling a trigger. Will Munny: It's a hell of a thing, killing a man. Take away all he's got all he's ever gonna have. The Schofield Kid: Yeah, well, I guess they had it coming. Will Munny: We all got it coming, kid. Unforgiven But I want you to know tonight that we, as a people, will get to the Promised L. And so I'm happy tonight; I'm not worried about anything; I'm not fearing any man! Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord! Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I've Been to the Mountaintop Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, for glory to your people Israel. Simeon, The Gospel of Luke 2:2932

4 Please silence all mobile phones electronic devices for the duration of the worship service. SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT WELCOME Seated Text in bold is read together by the entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of the worship service leaders The small symbols you will see throughout these pages correspond to a "Key to Liturgy" that you can pick up in the lobby to engage children in the elements of our worship service. Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gathered here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Whether we realize it or not, he is the one calling us to himself today every day. CALL TO WORSHIP Adapted from Isaiah 9 But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish: The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a l of deep darkness, on them has light shone. For the yoke of his burden, the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; the government shall be upon his shoulder, his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David over his kingdom, to establish it to uphold it with justice with righteousness from this time forth forevermore. 5 LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLE Seated Christians adopted the practice of the lighting of cles during Advent in the Middle Ages. Another cle is lit during each of the four Sundays of Advent, signifying hope, love, joy, peace. LECTIO SACRA 2 Peter 3:815a But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thous years, a thous years as one day. The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, then the heavens will pass away with a roar, the heavenly bodies will be burned up dissolved, the earth the works that are done on it will be exposed. Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been the practice of the church for thouss of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness godliness, waiting for hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire dissolved, the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, at peace. And count the patience of our Lord as salvation. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! INTERLUDE Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection worship. Music: TRURO, Psalmodia Evangelica,

6 Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy celebrates its abundance in Christ. CONFESSION OF SIN Adapted from Mark 1:18 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Sting Lord, salvation begins ends with you. In all of our infirmities sins we have looked for Good News in the things of this world. Forgive us, O God. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way, the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight, Come, Lord Jesus! John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And all the country of Judea all Jerusalem were going out to him were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Lord, let us meet our words of contrition with true acts of repentance. This Advent, may we leave the comforts of this world make room for you in our hearts. Now John was clothed with camel's hair wore a leather belt around his waist ate locusts wild honey. And he preached, saying, After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sals I am not worthy to stoop down untie. I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. Come Lord Jesus in holy fire! O Mighty One refine us for your glory, Amen! (You are invited to confess your sins silently) 3

10 A LITANY FOR ADVENT Adapted from The Magnificat: Luke 1:4655 Sting Christian, along with Mary we confess praise God's great Advent: Our souls magnify the Lord, our spirits rejoice in God our Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servants. For he who is mighty has done great things for us, holy is his name. And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; he has brought down the mighty from their thrones exalted those of humble estate; he has filled the hungry with good things, the rich he has sent away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham to his offspring forever. words: Charles Coffin, 1736 trans. 19 SERMON TEXT Isaiah 40:111 [1] Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. [2] Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, cry to her that her warfare is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received from the Lord's h double for all her sins. [3] A voice cries: In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. [4] Every valley shall be lifted up, every mountain hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, the rough places a plain. [5] And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken. [6] A voice says, Cry! And I said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, all its beauty is like the flower of the field. [7] The grass withers, the flower fades when the breath of the Lord blows on it; surely the people are grass. [8] The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will st forever. [9] Go on up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good news; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good news; lift it up, fear not; say to the cities of Judah, Behold your God! [10] Behold, the Lord God comes with might, his arm rules for him; behold, his reward is with him, his recompense before him. [11] He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, nd gently lead those that are with young. 16
