1 The Owmby Group of Parishes Magazine Delivered to 770 homes June 2010 Volume 19 Issue 3 Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Sun D-Day World Cup Starts 12 Trooping the Colour Father's Day Summer Solstice June is the sixth month of the year in the Gregorian calendar, with a length of 30 days. The Roman poet Ovid provides two etymologies for June's name in his poem concerning the months entitled the Fasti. The first is that the month is named after the Roman goddess Juno, wife of Jupiter and equivalent to the Greek goddess Hera. Whilst the second is that the name comes from the Latin word iuniores, meaning "younger ones," as opposed to maiores ("elders") for which the preceding month May is named. In both common and leap years, no other month begins on the same day of the week as June. This month and May are the only two months that have this. June's birthstone is the pearl, the Moonstone and the Alexandrite. The meaning is health & longevity. Its birth flower is the rose. Info from

4 4 Signpost My dear friends, THE BIBLE FROM YOUR PARISH PRIEST The Bible. What do you make of the Bible? It's sometimes called the most bought but also the least read book in the world. Why don't people read it? I think sometimes because people cannot quite fathom out what on earth sort of a book it is. And I use the words 'on earth' advisedly. The Bible is a very down-to-earth book. It is the account of the relationship between God the creator, and what God has created - earth, amongst other things. So first of all your mind needs to be open to at least the possibility of God. That there is God. That God is behind everything that is. What the Bible gives us is some people's working out of what this might mean. A lot of people have had a hand in composing the Old Testament. It's real writing, by real people. It didn't fall out of the sky. Sometimes these people tell us about God and us by means of stories, sometimes in song, sometimes in playing with ideas (or thinking aloud), sometimes - rarely - in simple facts about the way things are. To read the Bible means that you need to be open to all these different kinds of writing. By far the majority of the Bible is given over to what is called the Old Testament. This is, as it were, Part 1. I'd almost like to rename the Old Testament, and call it "The Book of Heroic Failures", except that there is already another book with this title. The Old Testament really is a book of heroic failures, not on God's part, but on ours, humanity's. There is a thread running through it. The Old Testament puts forward the notion that we, human beings, are God's idea, and that God has hopes for us. But we don't live up to those hopes. You might say that we have failed. In fact, the Old Testament does say that we have failed. Oh dear! But failure is not the end. There is a way out. The way out of failure is to be found in part 2 of the Bible, called the New Testament. Watch this space. God bless us all Peter Godden

6 6 Signpost It s the Law! BISHOP S LETTER von Bismark once said that laws are like sausages you don t want to be there when they are being made. But being there while laws are made is precisely what will be required of members newly elected to Parliament. And this raises questions about how Christians should relate to legislation and the law of the land. The standard response is that we do all we can to influence the legislative process by casting our vote, lobbying MPs and making the most of having Bishops in the House of Lords and then live as best we can with the outcome. On the other hand, there is a long history of civil disobedience on the part of Christians who refuse as a matter of principle to comply with the law, and are prepared to face the consequences. Each of these stances finds support in Scripture and the Christian tradition. But during the last Parliament we became aware of a third way whereby Christians campaigned to be exempted from certain laws because they were thought to conflict with Christian beliefs or threaten religious liberty. Former Archbishop George Carey even argued for cases involving Christian principle to be dealt with by specially chosen Judges who might be expected to understand the Christian point of view. What do you think? My own position is that we argue our corner when laws are being made but don t go in for special pleading in order to secure exemptions for ourselves. Civil disobedience remains an option for Christians when law and faith are in conflict, and many bad laws have been repealed as a result of peaceful protest. But spending less time on securing exemption for ourselves so as to concentrate on making laws which are for the well being of all, would not come amiss. 8 8 Signpost THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH The surgeon sat beside the boy's bed; the boy's parents sat across from him. "Tomorrow morning," the surgeon began, "I'll open up your heart..." "You'll find Jesus there," the boy interrupted. The surgeon looked up, annoyed. "I'll cut your heart open," he continued, "to see how much damage has been done..." "But when you open up my heart, you'll find Jesus in there." The surgeon looked to the parents, who sat quietly. "When I see how much damage has been done, I'll sew your heart and chest back up and I'll plan what to do next." "But you'll find Jesus in my heart. The Bible says He lives there. The hymns all say He lives there. You'll find Him in my heart." The surgeon had had enough. "I'll tell you what I'll find in your heart. I'll find damaged muscle, low blood supply, and weakened vessels. And I'll find out if I can make you well." "You'll find Jesus there too. He lives there." The surgeon left. The surgeon sat in his office, recording his notes from the surgery. "...damaged aorta, damaged pulmonary vein, widespread muscle degeneration. No hope for transplant, no hope for cure. Therapy: painkillers and bed rest. Prognosis:," here he paused, "death within one year." He stopped the recorder, and filled with frustration, he began to speak into the seemingly empty room. "Why?" he asked aloud. "Why did You do this, if You are God? If you've put him here, You've put him in this pain; and You've cursed him to an early death. Why?" Suddenly he heard a tender response into his mind. The Lord answered and said, "The boy, My lamb, was not meant for your flock for long, for he is a part of My flock, and will forever be. Here, in My flock, he will feel no pain, and will be comforted as you cannot imagine. His parents will one day join him here, and they will know peace, and My flock will continue to grow." The surgeon's tears were hot, but his anger was hotter. "You created that boy, and You created that heart. He'll be dead in months. Why?" The Lord answered, "The boy, My lamb, shall return to My flock, for he has done his duty: I did not put My lamb with your flock to lose him, but to retrieve another lost lamb..." The surgeon wept. The surgeon sat beside the boy's bed; the boy's parents sat across from him. The boy awoke and whispered, "Did you cut open my heart?" "Yes," said the surgeon. "What did you find?" asked the boy. "I found Jesus there, just as you said," replied the surgeon.

9 Signpost 9 MAXIMS OF EDWARD KING BISHOP OF LINCOLN Sun June 6 It suits our limited human nature to be able to realise God in a special place set apart for His Honour and Presence. Sun June 13 Our Ritual must be symbolic, but its symbolism must be in all loyalty to the teachings of our Church. Sun June 20 The realisation that the life of Christ is a moral force in the world fills us with inspiration and hope. Sun June 27 Happy moments on earth are foretastes of Heaven. ACACIA The Acacia is connected with and is regarded as a symbol of immortality; there are of course several species of this tree. Acacia-Vera is called the Egyptian thorn, and Acacia Seyal and produces gum arabic, it was used in constructing the Ark of the Covenant and the Alter of the Tabernacle, Christian legend also tells us that the crown of thorns was made of its spiked twigs; the wood of the cross is also said to have been of this tree, the red and white blossoms of the Acacia were regarded as sacred in Egypt, in one of the folk tales ascribed to the 19th dynasty, the hero is represented as placing his soul for safe keeping, within the petals of the topmost bloom growing in a valley full of Acacia and Paracelsus used it as a healing tree; using it with other ingredients as a plaster for wounds and also to stop bleeding. Apart from its connection with funeral rites, it also portrays immortality, from the fact that if any of the wood is buried with any bark left on it will will regrow; it is also said that the Acacia was consecrated to the sun in Arabia, but I have found no evidence of this, it has also been identified with the Golden Bough of Virgil, but this was evergreen Oak; in Greece the Acacia signifies innocence and the mind turning form evil, as if with instinctive horror. Dr Frederick Dalcho in an oration in the year 1802 said that the ancient Jews placed a branch of Acacia over a grave, not as a symbol of immortality, about which they only knew vaguely, - and not as a sign of resurrection, about which they knew nothing at all, but as a warning to their priests, who were prohibited from crossing a grave. Blount in his Levantine travels, said the planting of evergreen on graves was a Jewish custom of that region but on further research into this practice it would appear to be Turkish and not Jewish! To sum up therefore the Acacia is funereal, but in itself is a sign of life and is planted because it remains green all the year, and remember Acacia is an evergreen but not all evergreens are Acacia! 22 22 Signpost HACKTHORN & COLD HANWORTH HACKTHORN C. OF E. PRIMARY SCHOOL Summer term is well underway, even if the weather doesn't always stick to the plan! Despite the reluctance of spring to stick around at the beginning of May, the gardening club has been in full swing planting pumpkins and other seeds. The reception children have been so successful that they have already had a plant stall running in the playground on Friday mornings to sell surplus stock to the parents before assembly. The Lincoln Book Festival is always a popular time, and this year was no exception as we were treated to an inspirational visit by the Jamaican performance poet Jean Binta-Breeze, who captivated everyone with her tales of life in Jamaica and growing up in the '60s. She also challenged the pupils to write their own poems about their favourite places, a challenge which many of them rose to in spectacular fashion. There are lots more sporting activities going on this term with groups of pupils competing in all sorts of inter-school tournaments, such as cricket, golf, netball, mini tennis, and the very popular 'Kwik Sticks Hockey' On the afternoon of the 15th June we shall be holding our annual Teddy Bear's picnic. This is where all you pre-schoolers out there are invited to come and visit our school and find out all about it so that you can help your parents make a fully informed decision about where you'd like to go to school when the time comes. Please phone to book a place as this is always a popular event. Contact the school on to arrange a visit or request a School Brochure. 30 30 Signpost Welton & District Despite the cold weather, we had a very good day at the Welton May Fair, so thank you to everyone who came to see us at our stall. Our meeting this month will be on Thursday, 10th June, at The Falconer, starting at 7.00pm. We have a guest speaker, who will be talking about the Importance of Making Wills, Power of Attorney, Lifetime Trusts and Property Trusts. As this is such an important subject, the talk will be open to the general public, as well as our members. If you are interested, do come along to hear what he has to say. We will be having a stall at the Wickenby Wings and Wheels event on Saturday and Sunday, 19th and 20th June, and we will also be at the Dunholme Village Fete on Saturday, 26th June. If you are going to either event, do pop in and see us. You can be sure of a friendly reception. If you might be interested in joining the Legion, or need any help or information, please contact the Chairman, Tony Davis ( ) or the Secretary, Rex Gregson ( ). WELTON HEALTH CENTRE Since we altered our pre-booking system to allow up to four weeks ahead we have noticed an increase in the number of appointments booked ahead which are subsequently not kept or cancelled. In April we had 44 DNAs (did not attends) and were advised that the hospital had 21 of our patients. Please let us know if you are unable to attend (by telephone / in person/writing/or text to ). Our respiratory nurse advises us that we are still short of loaned nebulisers being returned - please let us have them back after the loan period so that they may be given to other patients in need of treatment. The reception staff continue to report problems with patients demanding to be seen by Dr Barton, despite the fact that he has now reduced his commitment in the practice to two days per week. Whilst we appreciate the frustrations some will feel, we will not tolerate patients being rude or impolite to our staff who are only carrying out their duties. It is not possible to offer the same service to all his former patients in these changed circumstances and we would respectfully ask patients to appreciate this. WELTON PATIENT DOCTORS ASSOCIATION We would just like to say Thank you to all who attended the Spring Lunch as well as all the people that helped out and made this such a successful event. All the money raised ( ) is going to the Transport scheme. We would just like to remind everyone of the following fundraising event. SATURDAY 9TH OCTOBER AUTUMN FAYRE We will be holding our annual Autumn Fayre at the Welton Village Hall from 2pm till 4pm. If you are interested in hiring a table ( 5.00) please contact Roy Minnitt or Janet Goddard If you have an article, story or event you would like to see published in the Signpost magazine, call Steve using the telephone number on page 2 - Alternatively, you can your submission to me.
