1 Messenger Winter Edition 2018 Simpson Words from our Pastor The Fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. Proverbs 9:10 NIV As most of you know I spent a few days out sick with the flu last week. Yes, I got a flu shot, and, No, it didn t help this year. I took the advice of medical professionals and stayed home and did as little as possible. Those who know me can only imagine how difficult that was. Anyway, after binge watching Netflix and emptying out our DVR, I had some time to reflect on a few nuggets of wisdom that can gained from unexpected sources. Here are some examples. Things I learned from having the flu The world (and our church) can get along just fine without me. Sometimes the best thing to do is nothing. Chicken soup with homemade noodles is a wonder drug. It doesn t cure the flu, but you feel a whole lot better. (See food from Mom s hand below) Trust the people around me. They ll get it done. Probably better than I would have. When you re sick staying away can be the best gift you can give someone. Sharing is not always a good thing. Things I ve learned from our puppy Daisy Sometimes you ve just got to jump and dance for joy. Don t hold back; wag United Methodist Church your whole body, not just your tail. When you re tired or upset go to your crate your refuge and be quiet and recharge. Food is good, but the best food comes from Mom s hand. The world is full of wonderful surprises and adventures great and small if you just pay attention. Let the people around you know how excited you are to see them and how much you care about them. Every time. Barking at the cow on TV only gets you upset; the cow doesn t care. Things I learned from Bob, the vacuuming robot Pulling on that loose strand at the edge of the carpet is probably not a good idea. Sometimes the carpet wins. No matter how smart I am, I still need a little help every now and then. Bob: I m stuck. Please free me pick me up and move me. We can and do get stuck on the most trivial and unexpected things. A clean floor every morning can inspire you to clean the rest of the place. I m (mainly) recovered from the flu and happy to be back at work. But, I think we all need to take a break every now and then and see what the world has to teach us. And we shouldn t need to get sick to do it. Keep on learning, Pastor Dennis

Randall Crayner at or The United Methodist Women will be supporting a new mission for Look for these coupons on the products you already buy, clip them off your products and bring them to church! The UMW will distribute them to area elementary schools! MARY RUTH CIRCLE On Tuesday, February 20 the Mary Ruth Circle will meet at 10:00 a.m. in the W.O.W. room. Since we were snowed out in January, we will have both our Pledge program and also organize our Shut-in mission. Come ready to pledge funds to support our projects and your efforts toward our new shut-in mission. Hope to see you there! Simpson has started a Young Adult Bible Study. We meet at Courtney and Andrew Schoenbachler s house at 8:30 pm on Sunday evenings. Currently we are doing a book study on IF by Mark Batterson. This book is about trading in your regrets and discovering God s possibilities. Please call Courtney at if you are interested in joining. We are open to changing the time of our group meetings if you are interested and the time does not work for you. We have a good time with fellowship and study. We would love others to join our group. FALL FESTIVAL Thanks to everyone that came to the giveaway meeting, we decided on the missions to give $12, to the following missions: United Methodist Women $3,000, youth mission trip $500, Give Ye Them To Eat (GYTTE) $900, Weekday Christian Education $1,000, Habitat $500, United Caring Shelter meals $1,500, Kairos (Weekend Support) $500, clothes closet $300, HUB $3,800. A planning meeting will be held in February at a date and time to be determined for those individuals and organizations that may be interested in using Simpson UMC or The HUB on Franklin to host community events. Please let Lindy Floyd know via at lindymfloyd@gmail.com if you are someone you know might be interested in being included in this meeting. Currently we have interest from Sounds 1 st, Purdue Extension, Faithful Families Initiative, Tri-State Creation Care, UMCOR, Lamasco Neighborhood Association we want to offer as wide a variety of classes and events as possible to appeal to as many people in the community as we can!

3 Simpson Church Messenger Page 3 CHILDREN S MINISTRY The Children s Ministry Team will have their annual planning meeting on Monday January 29 th at 6pm here at the church. If you missed this meeting or want to hear the details of what 2018 holds for the children of Simpson and surrounding community then please feel free to speak to Lindy Floyd. Lots of great activities and service opportunities will abound in We are always looking for new people to volunteer to help with the children s ministry program. Think about volunteering in some of these ways: Childcare, Sunday school, children s church, VBS, special events, ect. The Clothes Closet had a great year in We are loving our new location in the Fellowship Hall, we now use new OSHA approved clothing racks, we have a tagging system being used so that older clothing doesn t over stay it s welcome, we have seen some new volunteers, we were gifted a washing machine, we held our first fundraiser and made enough we can buy a dryer all around it was a fantastic Trustees are hard at work trying to decide on how best to install a washer and dryer for church and community clothes closet use in We are currently serving 50 and 100 people every month! Your Community Clothes Closet is definitely fulfilling a need here in our community. Winter clothing and coats are still being accepted until March 1 st. Interested in volunteering at the Community Clothes Closet then please speak to Linda Cunningham or Lindy Floyd. YOUTUBE Video production now has a link on our website. 4 Simpson Church Messenger Page 4 Real People. Real Weight Loss. Helping Millions to Take Off Pounds Sensibly Since 1948 We have a TOPS group meeting in the fellowship hall every Thursday at 8:30am. This is an up- beat, high energy, friendly group of women that would warmly welcome anyone interested in finding out more about the TOPS program or joining their group! Stop by the church some Thursday morning and see the fun they have. WEEKDAY CHRISTIAN EDUCATION Weekday staff is requesting weather prayers!! Our trailers must move between schools according to a schedule! We aren t like mail carriers to meet the schedule no matter the weather!! This last Monday both snow and rain kept us from gathering with our 3rd and 4th grade classes! Thank you for your supporting help via prayers!! The generous check from Fall Festival was so appreciated! Thank you for all the work put in to be able to share funding for our students to learn about God s love for each of them!! I enjoy sharing with my 36 students about community people making it possible for the Weekday program to be offered to them! Won t be long and we will be thinking geraniums! Yes! Spring will come! Construction is going well on the ADA restroom, small meeting room/office, coffee bar, etc. It s going so well that we re anticipating a soft opening in February and a Grand Opening in March. Yes it has taken far longer than we ever imagined but we know that everything has been completed to codes and regulations. Please share any ideas you have for the logo. 5 Simpson Church Messenger Page 5 GYTTE Exciting happenings for mission in Mexico-Give Ye Them to Eat! The September 19th earthquake destroyed thousands of homes near the epicenter. At GYT- TE s Tree of Live Training Center in Tlanqualpican 12 structures were damaged, but on destroyed! The basic structures were strong so minor repairs have been made. Staff and teams are working in villages to teach straw bale and bamboo construction to insure less damage in future earthquakes. This technique is far less costly to families who have to rebuild. A new missionary couple has been appointed to fill Muriel and Terry Henderson s positions as American missionaries. The native staff was well trained by the Henderson's and has been carrying on outreach help to villages in need, BUT the Henderson will not officially retire until JULY!! Please PRAY for all who carry on the work of helping Mexicans to have a better life on their side of the border!! MOUNTAIN MISSION TRUCK The Mountain Mission Truck will be at Simpson on Tuesday, February 27th early in the morning. If you have items to donate please be sure to have them at the church by Monday evening, February 26th. This meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 7 th at 6PM. We will briefly discuss trip details and go over any immediate questions anyone has. If there are any questions or you plan to go but cannot attend this meeting, please contact Ashley UNITED METHODIST MEN You re invited to "Fan the Flame of your Ministry to Men" a three hour training seminar for Men's Discipleship Leaders in your Church. DROP IN ASHES On Ash Wednesday, February 14 th, we will offer Drop in Ashes from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Stop by any time during those two periods for a few minutes of personal prayer and reflection and to receive the mark of ashes on your forehead. LENTEN STUDY Pastor Dennis will not be leading a Lenten Study this year. After Easter we will launch a church wide study and program focused on growing together in discipleship. Bishop Trimble is leading a Lenten Study for the whole Indiana conference based on Adolf Hansen s new book, Is It Time? Helping Laity and Clergy Discus Homosexuality One Question at a Time. You can participate online or in person at the University of Evansville.
