They agreed to meet monthly and learn about the different areas of the church and various resources in the community. They learned of their leadership strengths and how to use those strengths to lead others. They spent time growing spiritually. They learned about the rich history of FBC leadership in this community, and the structure and operation of First Baptist Church. They emerged as new leaders ready to serve in new places at FBC and to help a new group experience growth spiritually, relationally, and practically. The purpose of First Leaders is to help a group of people focus on their strengths as leaders and help them develop into First Baptist Church leaders. Ten First Leaders graduated from the program this past spring and are now ready to help others navigate through the process and use their strengths in new places of service. First Leaders , has eight candidates: Sharon Bowman, Josh Durham, Christy Clauss, Jimmy Ownby, Mark Palmer, Kennie Riffey, Kristi Turner, and Larry Wassom. Each of them will have a mentor who is an FBC member and can provide encouragement and information based on their experiences at FBC. The First Leaders will learn about FBC history, structure, and operations. They will learn about ministry opportunities at FBC and in the community. They will spend time in discipleship learning the importance of a prayer life and Bible study. Pray for them as they work individually and as a group to identify their leadership skills and where God wants them to be used. Wayne and Ellie Smith are residents in this community and have made the arrangements for us to meet there. This lunch will be our kick-off for the new church year. Everyone bring your favorite dish and join us for a wonderful time of fellowship. Our Senior Adults have a wonderful opportunity to get together each week during the academic year to sing and rejoice together, singing songs they love. The choir has taken a real launch into ministry, in that they regularly visit area nursing homes and assisted living centers to offer programs of music and inspiration. Also, the choir sings in the 11:00 am worship service at least two times during the year, in the Hanging of the Green service, and participates in the annual Spring Tune Share involving area Baptist churches. The choir is a real blessing to all who have a chance to hear them. Rehearsals for the Golden Notes takes place in the Adult 6 Sunday School room each Thursday morning from 10:30 11:30 am. Lunch is available for $6 following the rehearsal. Each spring the choir takes a trip. In recent years, the choir has visited Niagara Falls, NY, Williamsburg, VA, and this past spring, a trip to Branson, MO. While on these trips we sing at nursing homes and assisted living centers. These trips, offer everyone a time to fellowship with one another, to minister to others through our singing, and to visit various parts of our country. Our lives are enriched by witnessing the joy that it brings to those we sing to in these facilities. The Golden Notes Choir will resume weekly rehearsals beginning Thursday, September 12, at 10:30 am in Room 302. Come join us each Thursday as we rehearse and fellowship. Remember, you are not too young nor are you too old to be a part of the Golden Notes. This choir is available to everyone who loves to sing. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. ~ Colossians 3:16 Staff Celebrations Birthdays Vanessa Moore - September 27 Work Anniversaries Normalee Neubauer - Sept 22, 2005 Children's Choirs and Missions Groups Wednesdays, 5:40 pm Children's choirs and mission groups are a great way for preschool and elementary-aged kids to learn about God's Word and meet new friends. 5 FBC Concert Series Presents: The Burchfield Brothers Sunday, September 22, 6:30 pm, Sanctuary This unique brother duo from Nashville provides an evening of music, storytelling and comedy that touches people of all ages. With the sound of guitar, marimba, Irish whistles, recorders and more, the congregation will enjoy music of many styles including Appalachian folk, jazz, classical, praise and worship, and gospel. Primetimers love the music they recognize and young people are intrigued by the arrangements and instrumentation. Jon and Ben Burchfield write, It all started with our musical parents while growing up in the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee. We lived in a small community called Happy Valley, not far from Cades Cove. Many of the folks would bring their instruments to our home and stay well into the evening. That was the beginning of our musical influence. After being nominated for a Dove Award, the Burchfield Brothers began a full-time touring schedule and have continued to bring their message and music to thousands of people across America and the world. Orlando Poe, in his capacity as Chief Engineer of the XXIII Corps, was a key factor in the defense of Knoxville. The City was successfully defended against a siege led by Confederate Lt. Gen. James Longstreet, which culminated in the November 29, 1863, Battle of Fort Sanders. For essentially this action, Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman selected Poe as his Chief Engineer in Dr. Markel, Civil War Curator at the Frank H. McClung Museum at the University of Tennessee, is the author of Knoxville in the Civil War which includes more than 200 photographs, maps and ephemera. 6 Make U Glad Mug Ministry The Outreach Council has chosen to replace the Loaf Ministry with a Make U Glad Mug Ministry." Visitors to FBC will receive a useful mug, delivered to their home by a First Baptist member volunteer. Our mug has the FBC logo on the front and the back has our phone number and our web site information. The mug is stuffed with a Church calendar of events compiled monthly, a free ticket for Wednesday night supper, and a useful pen printed with phone number and web site. Let s encourage visitors to take a closer look at FBC! We Welcome Emily Hull McGee September 8 Emily Hull McGee began her ministry at Highland Baptist Church in Louisville Ky, in June, 2009, as the Minister to Young Adults. A 2009 Master of Divinity graduate of the Wake Forest University School of Divinity in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Emily s unexpected calling to ministry followed a lifetime of musical training and preparation for a career as an opera singer. In addition to deepening her passion for the Arts, Bachelor s and Master s degrees in Music from Furman University and Northwestern University respectively, gave Emily a first taste of life outside the church culture of her youth. Scholastic work in the fields of postmodern expressions of faith, theology and pop culture, ritual and worship, and politics proved to be fertile grounds for her growing passion for ministry among young adults. Emily is thrilled to serve in a church community who shares this same commitment to unconventional, creative, and emerging ministry with the ish crowd. Emily currently serves on both the Advisory Council and the Coordinating Council of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship as the newly-formed Networks Committee Chair. She also serves on the Board of Directors for Baptist Women in Ministry. Emily follows a long line of Hulls into the ministry (or the family business, as they lovingly refer to it!). Aside from deep theological conversations in coffee shops and pubs, Emily relishes road trips around the South, a good story (preferably of the Harry Potter variety), hosting gatherings in her new old house, and soaking up all that Louisville has to offer with her husband Josh, son Liam, and their adorable pup Knox. We Welcome Dr. George Schweitzer September 15 Dr. Schweitzer earned his B.A. in Chemistry from Central College in 1945, his M.S. in Chemistry from the University of Illinois in 1946, and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Illinois in Dr. Schweitzer also earned an M.A. in Philosophy from Columbia University in 1959 and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from New York University in 1964, and was awarded a Sc.D. for his work in the history of science in He joined the faculty at the University of Tennessee in 1948 and has done and continues to do research and consult with several of the facilities at Oak Ridge: K-25, Y-12, ORNL, ORAU, AEC, UT-AEC, and ARP. Dr. Schweitzer has been the recipient of numerous awards, fellowships, and lectureships, including a National Science Foundation Faculty Fellowship ( ). Schweitzer is an alumni distinguished professor at the University of Tennessee and is the author of 19 genealogical guidebooks. 6

7 Please Welcome Dr. Brad Creed September 22, 29, October 6 Brad Creed is Provost and Executive Vice President and Professor of Religion at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. He is a native of Jacksonville, Texas, and received his education at Baylor University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He holds a PhD in the History of Christianity from Southwestern Seminary. Prior to coming to Samford University, Creed served in the roles of Professor of Christian History, Associate Dean, and Dean at George W. Truett Theological Seminary of Baylor University in Waco, Texas, from Creed is also the former pastor of the First Baptist Church of Natchitoches, Louisiana, and has previously served as a youth minister and a church planter. He does frequent speaking for churches, conferences, workshops, and groups, and his writings and articles have appeared in journals, books and other publications During the year 2000, Creed was the Scholar in Residence at the Baptist Joint Committee on Public Affairs in Washington D.C., and Visiting Professor of Church History at the John Leland Center for Theological Studies in Falls Church, Virginia. He has been active in Baptist life having served on various state and national denominational committees, and has been the interim pastor of churches in Texas, Oklahoma, Virginia, Florida, and Alabama. Creed is a member of the Birmingham Kiwanis Club and the 2004 Class of Leadership Birmingham. He serves on the Board of Directors of the International Association of Baptist Colleges and Universities, the Alabama Historical Association, the Lilly Fellows Program in the Humanities and Arts, and chairs the Academic Task Force for the Council of Independent Colleges and Universities. He is a member of the Dawson Memorial Baptist Church of Birmingham.
