Cone and Katie G. Cannon, this seminar is an interdisciplinary survey of the moral connections between notions of the sacred and secular as demonstrated in Black popular culture. In seeking to explore the complex interplay of how and why African Americans spiritual concerns have manifested themselves more centrally in every session arenas such as literature, films, music, comedy, fashion, sports, and others, this seminar will examine the commonplace nature of Black faith and culture. Considerable attention will be paid to how popular culture serves vital resources for Black liberation theology and womanist ethics, in order to foment deep understandings about the ways in which human beings communicate, seek, and negotiate meaning and social power in both the sacred and secular spheres. Through such an interdisciplinary examination of sources drawn from African American culture, this seminar will emphasize the study of religion in the modern world as both a mode of orientation as well as a process of meaning-making, but with the description and critical analysis of Black religious phenomena--the complex matrix of sights, sounds, movements, and other sensory stimuli--in contradistinction to the invisibility and invalidation imposed upon subjugated peoples around the world by normative Western discourses. Therefore, drawing upon interdisciplinary analysis, the seminar seeks to identify what is distinctive about the wide array of African American religious thought and practices as well as the ways in which they have constructed and defined Black identity and culture in both xx x historic and contemporary terms. 3 (2 of 3 hours) Floyd-Thomas, Juan and Stacey M-F RARB 322 Black Church Studies Certificate (REG) Theology & ; Theology & the Arts Scripture and Interpretation;

Why have Christians been among the strongest advocates of gun rights in America? What is the relationship between the Constitution and modern gun rights? As well as seeking to situate the gun culture historically, this course will aim to develop constructive responses to gun rights and gun violence in America, exploring alternative traditions and theologies. The language and message of the words, the style of the music, and the communities where the singing takes place have varied greatly. But the experience of communal song has remained a powerful element of human experience, especially in religious contexts. Repertoires of sacred song have been preserved in hymnals, psalters, and other sources. Emory s Pitts Theology Library holds one of the most extensive and diverse collections of psalmody and hymnody in the world. In some cases, a particular volume in Pitts is the only extant copy in North America and sometimes it is the only one to be found anywhere. The purpose of this course is to provide a survey of sacred song during the past five centuries, making use of the rare items in Special Collections at Pitts.)
