Mystical teachings are intense and controversial since mystics are often seen to threaten religious institutions. We will discuss the nature, various meanings, and multiple aspects of the term mysticism. Then, we will look at the origin and development of mystical thought and practices from the classical to the modern period. In addition, we will study a few seminal mystical figures through their prose and poetry.
