4 Brothers and Sisters, It s here! It s here! Today is the day we ve been waiting for Stewardship Sunday! Another great day of celebrating our Amazing God! He, who is so generous and loving to each of us, deserves nothing less than our heartfelt thanks and praise! Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. For the LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods. Psalm 95:1-3 Thank you for spending time in prayer asking our Lord for His guidance and wisdom before deciding how to fill out your Faith Promise card. I truly believe that God honors those who trust in Him and rely upon Him in their time of need. As many of you know, Martin broke his leg in May and was out of work for 8 weeks. Overnight we went from being a 2 paycheck family to a 1 paycheck family. Not once in that 8 weeks did we go without what we needed. Our God was faithful to us. He provided and protected us. He healed Martin s leg so well that the doctor couldn t see where the break was without comparing his first and last x-rays! He even sent a rainbow on a dry day to confirm that healing! Our God is amazing and worthy of our praise every day! May God pour His blessings upon each of you as you serve HIM! Blessings, Dolores Breen Finance Committee Chair GUEST TRAINING (and refresher) will be held at Bethany on Sunday, November 19 at 4:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. GUEST (Gloucester United Emergency Shelter Team) provides cold season shelter and food to the homeless at various churches throughout Gloucester County from December 4 to March 26. Bethany will host 2 weeks this season: December 4 to 11, 2017 and January 29 to February 5, Volunteers, both experienced and newly trained, will be needed! A Day Shelter is also operated near the Moose Lodge. MUSIC AND THE PROTESTANT REFORMATION PART II Submitted by Rudy Shackelford Last week we sketched the early history of the Reformation, sparked by Martin Luther, an Augustinian monk, on 31 October With his famous 95 theses, Luther excoriated the Roman Catholic Church for the sale of indulgences and other corrupt practices. His study of Paul s Epistle to the Romans ( The just shall live by faith ) led Luther to a revelation known as the Tower Experience, wherein he envisioned a personal relationship with God instead of reliance on good works, elaborate ritual, and the dogma he found tyrannical. Luther renounced the celibacy of clergy and married a former nun, Katherine von Bora, with whom he fathered six children. And pushing the envelope to the utmost, Luther declared that the Pope was not infallible or above the Word of God for all of which he was excommunicated in But perhaps the most important legacy of the Protestant Reformation is Martin Luther s insistence that every aspect of worship be accessible to the common man. That all may understand was Luther s aim in translating the Bible from Greek into vernacular German; it also engendered the chorale, or congregational hymn. Last week we heard the signature Lutheran chorale, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, both in its original form and as the theme of a powerful organ prelude by Johann Pachelbel. Three centuries later this stalwart tune was quoted in the Reformation Symphony by Felix Mendelssohn, scion of a distinguished artistic, intellectual, and banking family which converted from Judaism to Christianity. The last of Mendelssohn s Six Sonatas for Organ is based on another Protestant chorale, Vater unser im Himmelreich, Martin Luther s version of The Lord s Prayer set to an anonymous melody of circa Vater unser was also a favorite of John Wesley and served as a model for many of Charles Wesley s original hymns. In the United Methodist Hymnal it appears with a different text, Thou Hidden Love of God (No. 414). Today s organ Meditation and Offertory provide examples of the art of musical variation at its highest level. Here it verges upon a spiritual transfiguration, like the supernatural and glorified change in the appearance of Jesus on the mountain as described in Matthew 17: 1-9. In the first movement of his Sonata No. 6, Mendelssohn presents Luther s four contrasting variations. The fourth is extremely tempestuous and might portray the shock and awe that overcame Peter, James, and John when Jesus face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.
