THE EPIPHANY OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST January 6, 2019 The Christmas Pageant and Holy Eucharist 10 am

Welcome to the Episcopal Church of the Atonement on this bright holiday when we celebrate the manifestation of God to the world. This morning, the parish offers the Christmas Pageant as the Gospel is proclaimed. Following the Gospel, our service will continue with prayers and Holy Eucharist. All children present are invited to join in the pageantry. Toward the end of the pageant children will be invited to come forward with a gift of rice or toothpaste, which we have been collecting as a gift for the Westfield Food Pantry. (The ushers will help you pick up a gift before the service.) You are invited to present your gift as we all worship the baby Jesus. Adults in the congregation are asked to refrain from photography during the pageant. At the conclusion of the presentation, we will pause for a moment and allow photographs to be taken. As we gather for worship, we encourage you to wait in silence, and enjoy the offering of beautiful music. 2

Voluntary Prélude sur I Introit de l'épiphanie Jehan Alain The people stand to sing. CAROL O come all ye faithful The Hymnal 83 O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; Come, and behold him, born the King of angels; O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord. Sing choirs of angels, sing in exultation, Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above; Glory to God, glory in the highest; Child for us sinners poor and in the manger, We would embrace thee, with love and awe; Who would not love thee, loving us so dearly? The Word of God Collect of the Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. O God, by the leading of a star you manifested your only Son to the peoples of the earth: Lead us, who know you now by faith, to your presence, where we may see your glory face to face; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. THE NATIVITY AND EPIPHANY OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST The Gospels According to Luke, 2:1-20 and According to Matthew, 2:1-15. During the reading of the Story, and singing of the carols, the congregation is asked to remain seated so that all may see. Please refrain from taking photographs. THE BIRTH OF JESUS In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. CAROL O little town of Bethlehem (verses 1 and 2) The Hymnal 79 O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by; yet in thy dark street shineth the everlasting Light; the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight. 3

For Christ is born of Mary; and fathered all above, while mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love. O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth! And praises sing to God the King, and peace to men on earth. THE ANGELS APPEAR TO THE SHEPHERDS In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid; for see I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors! CAROL Hark! the Herald Angels sing (verses 1 and 3) The Hymnal 87 Hark! the herald angels sing glory to the newborn King! Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled! Joyful, all ye nations, rise, join the triumph of the skies; with the angelic host proclaim Christ is born in Bethlehem! Hark! the herald angels sing glory to the newborn King! Mild he lays his glory by, born that we no more may die, Born to raise us from the earth, born to give us second birth. Risen with healing in his wings, light and life to all he brings, Hail, the Sun of Righteousness! Hail, the heaven-born Prince of Peace! Hark! the herald angels sing glory to the newborn King! THE SHEPHERDS JOURNEY TO THE STABLE When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us. So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. CAROL The First Nowell (verses 1 and 2) The Hymnal 109 The first Nowell the angel did say was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; in fields as they lay, keeping their sheep, on a cold winter s night that was so deep. Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel. They looked up and saw a star shining in the east beyond them far, and to the earth it gave great light, and so it continued both day and night. THEY GLORIFY AND PRAISE GOD When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. 4

CAROL Go Tell It On The Mountain The Hymnal 99 Go tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere: Go tell it on the mountain, that Jesus Christ is born! While Shepherds kept their watching O er silent flocks by night, Behold, throughout the heavens There shone a holy light. Down in a lowly manger The humble Christ was born, And God sent us salvation That blessed Christmas morn. THE VISIT OF THE WISE ONES In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage. When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel. Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. CAROL We Three Kings (verse 1) The Hymnal 128 We three kings of Orient are, Bearing gifts we traverse a-far, Field and fountain, moor and mountain Following yonder star. O, star of wonder, star of night, Star with royal beauty bright; Westward leading, still proceeding, Guide us to thy perfect light! THE OFFERING OF GIFTS Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage. When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. CAROL We Three Kings (verses 2-4) The Hymnal 128 Born a King on Bethlehem s plain, Gold I bring to crown him again, King for ever, ceasing never Over us all to reign. 5

Frankincense to offer have I: Incense owns a Deity nigh; Prayer and praising, gladly raising, Worship him, God Most High. Myrrh is mine; its bitter perfume Breathes a life of gathering gloom; Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, Sealed in the stone-cold tomb. After the Wise Ones have offered their gifts, the children of the congregation are invited to bring a gift of rice or toothpaste for the Westfield Food Pantry, and offer it at the manger. CAROL We Three Kings (verse 5) The Hymnal 128 Glorious now behold him a-rise, King and God and Sacrifice; Heaven sings alleluia: Alleluia the earth replies. Opportunity for photographs! HOMILY The Rev. Nancy Webb Stroud THEY RETURN BY ANOTHER WAY And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, the Wise Ones left for their own country by another road. Now after they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him. Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt, and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, Out of Egypt I have called my son. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Liturgy for the Whole Church, Susan K. Bock Leader Shine in your church, O God; embolden us, in a dark world, to speak truthfully and to act with the courage of love. This day and always, Christ, be our Light. Leader Leader Leader Shine on your world, O God; heal the warring of nations and the wounding of the earth to give us peace at last. This day and always, Christ, be our Light. Shine for your people, O God; make us one human family who clothe each other with mercy and feed each other with justice. This day and always, Christ, be our Light. Shine in our hearts, O God; help us to reach to the heavens and deep in our souls to seek you, to find you, and to know you. 6

Leader Leader This day and always, Christ, be our Light. We give thanks for the Randzio children and grandchildren for whom the altar memorials have been given. Shine in the saints, both the living and the departed, O God. Today we remember especially, Phyllis Thorpe Spaeth, departed this week, Catie Randzio for whom the altar memorials have been given, Irakli G. Kallfa and Georgiana Tsianco Kallfa, for whom the sanctuary lamp burns; and all those we call before you now. may offer names silently or aloud Teach us to follow their lead to outrageous faith and eternal love. This day and always, Christ, be our Light. Shine for the afflicted, O God; remind them of your deep compassion and how you tenderly bear all our sorrows. Particular intercessions and petitions may be offered. This day and always, Christ, be our Light. The Celebrant adds a concluding collect. Shine, O God, as the Light that creates, the Light that calls, the Light that comes again with every dawn. Shine as the Light that scatters every shadow, and the Light in which we promise to walk, with your help. Amen. The Peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Welcome and Announcements The Great Thanksgiving An offering of money is received during the voluntary. Then the people stand to sing the hymn while the gifts of money, bread, and wine are offered. Offertory Anthem Brightest and best of the stars of the morning James Proctor Harding Brightest and best of the stars of the morning, dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid; star of the east, the horizon adorning, guide where our infant Redeemer is laid. Vainly we offer each ample oblation, vainly with gifts would his favor secure; richer by far is the heart s adoration, dearer to God are the prayers of the poor. Cold on his cradle the dewdrops are shining, low lies his head with the beasts of the stall; angels adore him in slumber reclining, Maker and Monarch and Savior of all. Shall we then yield him, in costly devotion odors of Edom, and offerings divine, gems of the mountain, and pearls of the ocean, myrrh from the forest, or gold from the mine? Brightest and best of the stars of the morning, dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid; star of the east, the horizon adorning, guide where our infant Redeemer is laid. Words: Reginal Heber Music: Morning Star, James Proctor Harding 7

Hymnal 115 Celebrant Celebrant Celebrant The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. What Child is this It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because in the mystery of the Word made flesh, you have caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of your glory in the face of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Sanctus Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The Hymnal, S128 We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore, according to his command, O Father, We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with the Blessed Virgin Mary and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of 8

the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread The priest breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept. Celebrant Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Hymnal S 152 Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. The Priest says the following Invitation The Gifts of God for the of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. All are welcome to receive the presence of God in the Bread and Wine at our Altar. Standing or kneeling is appropriate. To receive the bread, place one hand over the other and the wafer will be placed in your palm. To receive the wine, you may take a sip from the chalice, or dip the edge of your wafer into the wine. If you wish to receive a blessing instead, cross your arms over your chest. Gluten free wafers and chalice are available at your request. If you are unable to come to the Altar please inform an usher, and Communion will be brought to you. If you want to learn more about the Sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion, please speak with Mother Nancy or Deacon Pat. Communion Hymn 82 Of the Father s love begotten Prayer after Communion Let us pray. The people stand. Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen The Blessing May Christ, the Son of God, be manifest in you, that your lives may be a light to the world; and the blessing of God, Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen. The deacon dismisses the people, who respond Thanks be to God. Hymnal 124 What star is this with beams so bright 9
