(Ephesians 4:30-5:2) From Father Walter We all know how easy it is to conjure up fabrications that will deceive someone. We know how easy it can be to try to "get even" with someone who has hurt us. And we know how easy it is to get down on ourselves and think of ourselves as worthless. And yet we also know how to be generous and help someone who is in need. We know how to forgive someone who has hurt us. We know how to be patient, especially in those situations that agitate us. We seem to know a lot. But what we don't always know is that we are in the midst of a spiritual battle. On the one hand, that wily and crafty person we call Satan operates behind the scene, urging us to sin. On the other hand, the Holy Spirit is at work, urging us to be loving, kind, caring, and generous. This spiritual battle is going on all the time. So what can we do about it? First, we can continually tell ourselves that the Holy Spirit, the third Person of the Blessed Trinity, loves us. When we know that someone loves us unconditionally, that knowledge causes us to say, "I never want to hurt you or violate you." What a wonderful protection against sin! How? By not allowing any love to overshadow him. How else? By trying our best to love everyone and treat everyone as we want to be treated with honour, respect and mercy. Lord Jesus, help me never to grieve your Holy Spirit.

2 CHARISMS Charism is the Greek word used in the New Testament for favour or gratuitous gift. Charisms, or spiritual gifts are special abilities given to all Christians by the Holy Spirit to give them the power both to represent Christ and to be a channel of God s goodness for people. Charisms are spiritual gifts granted by the Holy Spirit to empower Christians to bring God s redeeming love into the world. All baptized Christians are given charisms. According to Catholic teaching, it is the faith of the church that you possess one or more of the charisms. Every person has a unique role to play in building up the body of Christ. There are gifts of the Holy Spirit that we are given to keep and gifts we are given to give away. The traditional seven gifts of the Holy Spirit and the fruits of the Spirit are gifts given to us to keep. They are part of our inner transformation as Christians and provide the inner Christlikeness necessary for the effective use of our charisms. Charisms on the other hand are given to us to give away and are one of the ways God continues to enter the world through our assent and cooperation. They always benefit other people. As disciples, we offer our entire selves to God - including our personalities, natural talents, education, life experience and background to be used for his purposes. Charisms differ from natural talents in several important ways. Charisms are not in-born, that is, inherited from our parents, but are given to us by the Holy Spirit, whom we received through Baptism and Confirmation. Secondly, charisms are supernaturally empowering. When we serve God, we are not limited to just the gifts with which we were born! Our natural talents can become wonderful tools for God s purposes and sometimes an already existing natural gift is transformed by the Holy Spirit into a supernaturally empowered charism. In other words, they enable us to have an effectiveness that surpasses our natural human abilities. For example, if a doctor possesses a charism of healing, he may well find that his patients get well in extraordinary ways, either recovering more quickly than would be expected naturally or getting well when natural healing would not have occurred at all. Finally, we could use a natural talent for an evil purpose or for our own enjoyment. God will not allow himself to be used for evil and charisms are always for the benefit of others, rather than ourselves. At least 27 gifts are listed in scripture references (Acts 2, 1Cor 12, Romans 12 and Ephesians 4) covering a broad range of gifts, from prophecy and healing to mercy, teaching, almsgiving, perseverance, joy, encouragement, hospitality and leadership. Some charisms may seem extraordinary (such as prophecy, healing or discernment of spirits) and others quite ordinary (such as administration, service, hospitality or mercy), but all charisms are empowered by God. Whether extraordinary or ordinary, all charisms ought to be exercised in the service of God. We use our charisms together with our natural talents and all that we are to serve God and our neighbour.

3 The inspiration for what specifically charisms are, comes from Paul s letter: To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another he gives the gift of special knowledge. The Spirit gives special faith to another, and to someone else he gives the power to heal the sick. He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and to another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to know whether it is really the Spirit of God or another spirit that is speaking. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, and another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. It is the one and only Holy Spirit who distributes these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have. (1 Cor 12:8-11) The first set of gifts are those that are WORD GIFTS, or Gifts of Grace (charis) where the believer is given the power to say things. These gifts are: The gift of prophecy whereby the person gives God s message for the community or for an individual. The gift of tongues whereby the person gives God s message for the community that is present, but he speaks in a language unknown to him, and even to most of the community. The gift of interpreting tongues whereby the person, after hearing another person yielding to the gift of tongues, gives the general meaning of what the person has said, or a response to what has been said. The second set of gifts are the SIGN GIFTS, or Gifts of Works (energema) where the believer is given the power to do certain acts. These gifts include: The gift of faith which enables the person at a given moment, without human reasoning or any sense of doubt, to ask or to speak in the name of Jesus in such a way that what he says or asks must come to pass. This is the kind of faith that can literally move mountains. The gift of healing which enables the person to be God s instrument in bringing about the well-being of another person who is sick, whether spiritual, psychological and/or physical. The gift of miracles is a passing manifestation of God s power whereby some obstacle is removed or some opportunity is seized in a very special way, so that it could only come from God s intervention into human affairs. This gift is a sign of God s presence and power and, therefore, often a source of belief to many. Finally, the third set of gifts are what they call the INTELLECTUAL GIFTS, or Gifts of Service (diakonia) which give the believer the power to know certain truths. These gifts are: The word of wisdom whereby a person is granted an insight into God s plan in a given situation and is enabled to put this into words of advice or of direction.

4 The word of knowledge whereby a person is granted an insight into a divine mystery or facet of man s relation to God and is enabled to put this into a word that helps others to grasp the mystery. The gift of discernment whereby a person is enabled to know the source of an inspiration or action, whether it came from the Holy Spirit, his own human spirit, or from the evil spirit. These charismatic gifts are not something which we possess, but rather they are ways in which the Holy Spirit regularly reveals Himself through an individual. Usually they are passing manifestations, as and when the need arises to minister to someone else. When the person receives a prompting, he/she must yield to the Holy Spirit and minister to another person using whatever gift the Spirit prompts him/her to manifest. All of these charismatic gifts are meant for the good of others, not simply for, and sometimes not even including, the person yielding to the gifts. Therefore, yielding to these gifts should be a loving response by the person, and should be motivated purely by love. As St. Paul notes in his famous first letter to the Corinthians (13:1-2): If I have all the eloquence of men or of angels, but speak without love, I am simply a gong booming or a cymbal clashing. If I have the gift of prophecy, mysteries there are, and knowing everything, and if I have faith in all its fullness, to move mountains, but without love then I am nothing at all. God is calling you to a work of love that will fill your life with purpose and joy, and discerning your charisms can help you discover that call. Knowing the charisms that you have been given can greatly clarify your decision-making. In particular, if you are going through a life transition (entering retirement, changing jobs, re-entering the job market, etc.), you might find that gifts of discernment help you decide what turn to take next. Understanding your charisms can help you simplify your life and avoid burnout. If you know your gifts, it becomes easier to say, no when people ask you for things that you don t really have to give. And because it is unusually energizing and fulfilling to exercise a charism, you are much less likely to burn out if you are working in your area of giftedness. Discerning your charisms can help you discover how God has gifted you to make you more effective at what you do for a living, no matter what kind of work you do. Understanding your charisms can free you from the need to compare yourself to others. If you find that you judge yourself for not measuring up to the standards of others, you can be freed by recognizing that your giftedness and calling are different from theirs. Understanding your charisms can make a big difference in family life! It can enable you to understand and cherish your spouse s gifts and help you recognize and nurture the emerging

5 gifts of your children. Some people recognize that they are especially called and gifted by God to work with children or families. The discernment of charisms can help you understand and name what you are already experiencing. Our charisms are tools given to us both to help us convince people of the reality of Christ and to be a sign of God s loving presence. Discernment is the process by which we distinguish the voice of God in our lives. The word, discern means to cut away. Discernment, therefore, is the fundamental art of separating the tangled motivations that pull like invisible threads at our hearts, cutting away all but those that come from the Lord. In discerning the existence of a specific charism we look for the presence of three signs: 1. An unmistakable inner experience of peace, energy and joy when you re using the gift. 2. Unusually effective and successful results in what you re trying to accomplish. 3. Other people s direct or indirect recognition of the gift s presence. If any one of these three signs is missing you are likely not dealing with a charism. Here is a five step discernment process: 1. Choose the charism you want to test and try to approach it objectively. 2. Experiment thoroughly with the gift by using it. 3. Examine your inner experience. 4. Evaluate your actual effectiveness. 5. Weigh the response of others. Once you choose one charism to focus on get to know the charism itself. Focusing on the specifics of a gift is very important, because often it is a nuance of a charism, a distinctive detail, that makes discernment possible both in distinguishing it from another charism, as well as from natural talents, experience, or developed skills. The Canon Luhovy Assembly Educational Foundation was established in 1982 to provide financial assistance to Ukrainian Catholic students who attend secondary and post-secondary institutions, or private Catholic secondary school. This assistance is also offered to seminarians and religious sisters. Through their Annual Fund Raising Dinners, the Canon Luhovy Assembly Educational Foundation raised funds to support this bursary program. More than $207,000 in scholarship/bursaries has been awarded since the Foundation s inception in More than 32 scholarship/bursaries have been awarded to seminarians and reverend sisters of the religious orders. Approximately 400 bursaries have been awarded during this time period.
