SAINT BASIL the GREAT PARISH 202 HARCOURT STREET, WINNIPEG, MB R3J 3H3 Parish Office: Parish Hall: Parish Priest: Rt. Rev Canon Walter Klimchuk Why We Pray the Rosary at St Basil s Parish From Father Walter Twenty-five years ago I decided to visit the homeland of my forefathers to reconnect with my roots. This trip gave me the opportunity to visit the church in Hrushiw where the blessed Virgin appeared to thousands of pilgrims. In her message to the pilgrims she stated: The Rosary is the weapon against Satan. He fears the Rosary. Say the Rosary every day. Here are some of her other messages: I have come on purpose to thank the Ukrainian people because you have suffered most for the Church of Christ in the last seventy years. Teach the children to pray. Teach children to live in truth and live yourselves in truth. Forgive nations which have harmed you. Do not forget those who have died in Chernobyl disaster. Chernobyl is a reminder and a sign for the whole world. Repent and love one another. The times are coming, which have been foretold, as being those in the end of times. See the desolation which surrounds the world: the sins, the sloth, the genocide. I come to you with tears in my eyes and I emplore you, pray and work for good, and for the glory of God. Ukraine was the first country to acknowledge me as Queen and I have received her under my care. Work for God for without this, there is not happiness and no one will gain the Kingdom of God. SUNDAY DIVINE LITURGY 10:00 a.m. (Rosary precedes each Liturgy by one half hour) WEEKDAY SERVICES 8:30 a.m. Rosary followed by Liturgy CONFESSIONS Before Divine Liturgies BAPTISIMS By appointment FUNERALS By arrangement MARRIAGES By appointment at least three months in advance WEBSITE: PARISH OFFICE ADDRESS: parish@saintbasilwpg.ca BULLETIN SUBMISSIONS: bulletin@saintbasilwpg.ca You shall gain my heart and live in unity. Follow the leaders of the Church boldly and you will gain your own country and power and love amongst nations of the world. I love Ukraine and Ukrainian people for their suffering and faithfulness to Christ the King and I shall protect Ukraine for the glory and the future of the Kingdom of God on earth.

Father Gabriel Amorth, Chief Exorcist of the Vatican writes: one day a colleague of mine heard the devil say during an exorcism Every Hail Mary is like a blow on my head. If Christians knew how powerful the Rosary was, it would be my end. The secret that makes this prayer so effective is that the Rosary is both prayer and meditation. It is addressed to the Father, to the Blessed Virgin and to the Holy Trinity, and is a meditation centered on Christ. When you pray Holy Mary Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, the Blessed Mother comes instantly to your side to pray with you. And she does not come alone. She brings angels with her. And not just one or two for she is the Queen of Angels, so choirs of angels come with her. And she and Jesus are joined at the heart and cannot be separated so she brings Jesus with her. And Jesus cannot be separated from the Trinity so He brings the Father and Holy Spirit with Him. And where the Holy Trinity is, all of creation is, and you are surrounded by such beauty and lights as you cannot imagine in this life. Your Mother comes as Our Lady of Grace with her hands outstretched. Rays of light emit from her hands piercing your body, healing you and filling you with graces. This is your inheritance which was poured out from the heart of Jesus on the Cross, when the centurion pierced His Heart with the spear, into the only pure vessel ready to receive such graces at that time, your Mother Mary. Now as you pray the Rosary or even just recite one Hail Mary, you receive your portion of these graces. Anyone who goes to Mary and prays the Rosary cannot be touched by Satan. We at St. Basil s Parish pray the Rosary daily before Divine Liturgy. The power of the Rosary is revealing the hidden darkness that has been influencing the souls of the faithful. Each day I can feel more light entering the sacred place of St Basil s Church and the darkness is endeavouring to hide itself. However, the Light will win and the Kingdom of God will be proclaimed. PRAYER PRAYER is something that has always been a part of me. I prayed when I needed to hear my Father s heart, when I was baptized by John, when I chose the twelve, when I did mighty works, when I broke bread, and when I blessed the children. I prayed when facing my darkest hour, and I prayed as I gave my life upon the cross. I prayed in public before others, and I prayed alone. I prayed in the daytime, and I prayed at night. When I prayed with my disciples just before I was arrested in the garden, you were included in that prayer. When I taught my disciples how to pray, it was for your understanding as well. I know that I am not physically present with you today as I was with my disciples so many years ago, but my heart of prayer has not changed. I am praying for you now because you are mine. My love for you today is great, and my heart for you is full. I pray peace over you and blessings upon you. I pray rivers of joy to be within you and to flow out through you. I pray good things over you. I pray that your life will bear much fruit, that you will grow in grace, that your faith will increase, and that you will stand strong until the day that I see you face to face. -Jesus

FRUITS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Part One At Baptism, we receive seven special gifts from the Holy Spirit (wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety & fear of the Lord). These gifts are freely given to us to help us live as followers of Jesus and to build up the Body of Christ, the Church. The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are sealed and strengthened within us at Confirmation. These seven gifts help us to respond to the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives, to make good choices, and to serve God and others. When we cooperate with the graces and gifts we receive from the Holy Spirit, we grow as followers of Jesus. We see the effect of the Holy Spirit s presence in our lives in special qualities and attitudes that we develop as we grow in faith. The Church identifies these qualities and attitudes as the fruits of the Holy Spirit. The fruits of the Holy Spirit are signs that the Holy Spirit is alive within us and helping us live the Catholic faith in our daily lives. There is one very special incredible verse of Scripture that will tell you that God the Father wants to transmit and impart specific fruits of the Holy Spirit into our personalities. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. (Galatians 5:22) God wants all of us to enter into a true sanctification process with Him so that He can begin the process of molding, shaping, and transforming us into the express image of His Son Jesus Christ. He wants to make us into a better and more holy people. He wants to transform us by the renewing of our minds. He wants to put right thinking into our thought process. It is by the power of the Holy Spirit that this sanctification process is done with you in this life. You are not to be a passive robot in this process. You have to be willing to work in cooperation with the Holy Spirit once He begins to start this sanctification process within you.

Note the following: 1. The word Spirit is with a capital S which means these fruits are coming directly from the Holy Spirit, not from us. 2. What this means is that God s love, God s peace, God s joy, and God s goodness can start to be transmitted up into our personality. These are His divine attributes and personality qualities that will start to move into the core of our personality. 3. Think about the ramifications of this that God the Father Himself is allowing us to share in a part of His divine nature by allowing His Holy Spirit to transmit and impart these nine divine qualities right up into our soul and personality! In one short, but incredibly powerful Scripture verse, God the Father is giving all of us an incredible revelation on what can go on behind the scenes in the spiritual realm for those who are willing to work with Him in this sanctification process. Note that almost every aspect of the fruit of the Spirit deals with our relationships. Scripture has a surprisingly large number of passages dealing with our relationship to "one another". God wants to build us up into a single body, a single Bride for his Son. How we deal with one another is very important. As we shall see in the following discussion, the different fruits are interrelated. LOVE to love with a God-like love, unconditionally, and vigorously, not counting the cost, not being based on mere reciprocity. It is wanting only what is good for the other. Agape love is a decision; it does not depend on feelings. God loves "the world" (John 3:16), and we are told to be Imitators of God" (Ephesians 5;1). Jesus commands us to love one another (John 13:34), love our neighbor (Mark 12;36), and love our enemies (Matthew 5:44). We have a choice whether to obey or to disobey these commands. We love our fellow man, not because we are attracted to him or drawn to him, but because God commands us to love and we have decided to obey God's commands. After we have made that decision the feeling may come, but we love whether or not it comes. This means that we can learn to love. The central importance of love. "Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love" (1 John 4:8). He has loved us with an everlasting love and drawn us with lovingkindness (Jeremiah 31:3). "His love endures forever" (Psalm 136). God is "abounding in love" (Psalm 103:8). If we would be "imitators of God" (Ephesians 5:1), if we would "participate in the divine nature" (2 Peter 1:4), then we must love. Jesus Christ has given us

the greatest example of love in coming to earth and dying for our salvation, and he has told us to love one another as he has loved us (John 13:34-35). Love expresses itself in action. 1 John 3:18 declares. "Let us not love with words or tongue, but with actions and in truth." It has been said that, "Love can be known only from the actions it prompts." Self-sacrifice "This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers" (1 John 3:16). Obedience to God's commands One of the essential aspects of agape love is obedience to God. Jesus said, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching" (John 14:23, see also v. 15). I John 5:2 says, "this is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands." 1 John 2:5 says "If anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him." Thankfulness "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits" (Psalm 103:2). "Give thanks in all circumstances" (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Not only does our thankfulness express our love for God, but as we decide to be thankful and recognize the blessings he has given us we realize more fully how much he loves us, and our love for him increases. Similarly, thankfulness to others increases our love for them. Compassion At one point Jesus withdrew to a solitary place, but when a large crowd followed him "he had compassion on them and healed their sick" (Matthew 14:14). Then he fed them. John says, "If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?" (1 John 3:17; see James 2:15-16). Love is the motivator that releases the power of the Holy Spirit within us. Love for God motivates us to want to become like God in character. Love for our fellow men motivates us to want to show them kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and patience. Without love our gifts and actions are nothing (1 Corinthians 13:1-3). They need the powerful motivation of love to be effective. "God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us" (Romans 5:5), and it is that love that releases the power of the Holy Spirit to work within and through us. An examination of 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 will show much about the nature of love, and its relationship to the other aspects of the fruit of the Spirit. "Love is patient". Patience is an aspect of the fruit of the Spirit. Ephesians 4:2 says "Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love."

"Love is kind." Kindness is another aspect of the fruit of the Spirit. "It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud." (In this sense it is related to gentleness, which includes humility.) Jesus Christ is the greatest example of love and he "humbled himself and became obedient to death" (Philippians 2:8). "It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered." Self-control is another aspect of the fruit of the Spirit. So are kindness, gentleness and peace. "It keeps no record of wrongs." God blots out our transgressions (Psalms 51:1, 103:12); so we need to forget the wrongs others have done us. "Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth." "Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ" (Ephesians 4:15). "It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails." Faithfulness is one of the aspects of the fruit of the Spirit. God's "love endures forever" (Psalms 106:1, 118:1, 130:7, 136; Lamentations 3:22-23). "From everlasting to everlasting the Lord's love is with those who fear him" (Psalm 103:17). God's love is unfailing. If we are to be like him, then our love must endure and not fail. It needs to be always there for those whom we love. JOY The joy referred to here is more than a passing worldly joy. It is deeper than an emotional experience. It is rooted in God and comes from him. Since it does not have the world for its origin but, rather, comes from God, it is more serene and stable than worldly joy, which is merely emotional and lasts only for a time. Joy is directly related to several other aspects of the fruit of the Spirit: Love (Psalm 31:7), peace (Romans 14:17), faith (Philippians 1:25; see 1 Peter 1:8), and patience (Colossians 1:11-12). Joy is also a command. "Be joyful always" (1 Thessalonians 5:16). "Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say rejoice" (Philippians 4:4). We must decide to rejoice regardless of the circumstances, and regardless of whether we feel like it. Our joy does not depend on the circumstances. It rests on our relationship with the Father. We can have joy, no matter what the circumstances, because we are the adopted sons and daughters of our Father in Heaven and we know that He loves us and desires our companionship. It is because He has given us "new birth unto a living hope" (1 Peter 1:3) that we can be joyful (1 Peter 1:8-9). Jesus wants us to have the "full measure" of his joy (John 17:13). He wants our joy to be "complete" (John

15:11, 16:24). We find joy by being in the presence of the Father. "In thy presence is fullness of joy" (Psalm 16:11 KJV). "Be joyful always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances" (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). As we pray we acknowledge our relationship with the Father and come into His presence. Giving thanks is crucial. In any situation we can decide whether to give thanks or to complain. Complaining brings misery and giving thanks brings joy. "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds" (James 1:2). We do not enjoy the trials, but we recognize that they are part of a process by which God is teaching us and shaping us to become the person he wants us to be, and we take joy in the fact that he cares enough about us to want to shape us. We can indeed rejoice always and give thanks in all circumstances because we know beyond a shadow of a doubt that "in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who are the called according to his purposes" (Rom 8:28). We are in a win-win situation! In the rough and tough world we live in with all of the crime, disorder, and bad things that can happen to anyone of us at any time, many Christians have lost a lot of their joy in the Lord as a result of some of the beatings they have taken in this life. The quality of joy is a much needed quality in this day and age. No matter how bad of a beating you may have taken in this life God can still fully heal, deliver, and restore you if you are willing to work with Him in this healing process. Realize that God can transmit this divine quality right up into your personality and this will be His joy, not your joy, once it starts to flow up into you. And once God starts to release His joy into your system, you won t be able to help but feel it. And once you are able to start feeling it again, it will become much easier for you to learn how to walk back in it in your own daily walk with the Lord. The Bible says that the joy of the Lord is your strength. This is why it is so important that every Christian have some level of God s joy operating through them in this life. Without God s joy operating in your life, things can begin to dry up. Nothing is ever fun anymore. Everything can start to become a chore. Before you know it, you will want to start to withdraw from others and life in general. The joy of the Lord can really give you an incredible surge of strength in your own daily walk with God especially when you have to take on some really tough situations. This is why each Christian should work very closely with the Holy Spirit in not only getting Him to release His joy into their system, but to also keep it running through them on a very regular and consistent basis.

Mary Refuge of Holy Love says, Praise be to Jesus. Today, I invite you to understand that Satan often turns good into his tool of evil. Take, for instance, some of the virtues such as obedience. Obedience in and of itself is admirable and deepens the soul s journey in holiness. But obedience can be used to control and manipulate by the abuse of authority. It is then that it becomes a tool in Satan s hand. Another example would be patience, a virtue that often takes a lifetime to mature. But if you are patient with the sins of others instead of correcting them, your patience becomes an instrument of evil. This all tells you that you must look at the fruits of your actions. Do you see the salvation of souls and your own personal holiness benefiting from your actions? Or are you enabling evil under the pretense of practicing virtue? Take time to think this through. Do nothing for the sake of popularity or material gain. Do all things in Holy Love.
