1 The Waggonette page 1 The Waggonette January 2019 Feeding Hungry Souls Nourishing Healthy Spirits Waggoners United Methodist Church 1271 Longs Gap Rd., Carlisle, Pennsylvania Church Office (717) Bridge Café 8:00 AM Wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? A star led the magi to find the babe of Bethlehem and to him they offered their gifts, for they had found the savior. Where do we search for our salvation, our meaning and purpose in life? Some seek it in earthly honors or the accumulation of wealth or property. Others see it by attracting attention or in popularity or political power and control. As Christians we find it in being the earthly presence of Christ on earth, seeking the least the last and the lost. This season of the year, Epiphany, we celebrate the ways Jesus was revealed to the world as Messiah. Let us remember that as the Body of Christ the church continues his work in the world. Nearly a century ago a Baptist preacher, in a sermon to a youth convention, preached on this subject, his words then ring as true now as ever. I would like to share them with you from a sermon entitled, One Solitary Life.: Here is a man who was born in an obscure village as the child of a peasant woman. He grew up in another obscure village. He worked in a carpenter shop until he was thirty and then for three years was an itinerant preacher. He never wrote a book. He never held an office. He never owned a home. He never had a family. He never went to college. He never put his foot inside a big city. He never traveled two hundred miles from the place where he was born. He never did one of the things that usually accompany greatness. He had no credentials but himself. He had nothing to do with this world except the naked power of his divine manhood. While still a young man the tide of popular opinion turned against him. His friends ran away. One of them denied him. Another betrayed him. He was turned over to his enemies. He went through the mockery of a trial. He was nailed upon the cross between two thieves. His executioners gambled for the only piece of property he had on earth while he was dying, and that was his coat. When he was dead, he was taken down and laid in a borrowed grave through the pity of a friend. Nineteen wide centuries have come and gone and today he is the center of the human race and the leader of the column of progress. I am far within the mark when I say that all the armies that ever marched, and all the navies that were ever built, and all the parliaments that ever sat and all the kings that ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of man upon the earth as powerfully as has this one solitary life. Blessings for a happy 2019, Pastor Rick Denison Pastor Rick Denison
2 The Waggonette page 2 Get Their Name Study Sermon Series Begins January 13 Every church seems to want new people. But, have you ever noticed that when a new church is formed most of the people are pulled not from new believers but from the membership of neighboring churches? Why? Most people come to church because a friend or family member invites them. Many Christian friendship circles are full of folks who are already church members. So, when we invite someone new to our church they are not new to the faith but often are coming from another fellowship. The command of Jesus was not to steal sheep but to make disciples. Jesus sent us to help people discover the power that can come from a friendship with God. We should seek those who need the love of God and the fellowship of the church not those who already have it. While making our church a welcoming place is part of the answer, to be honest, most who need Christ will seldom darken the door of a church. We need to find ways to take the Gospel to people where they are. In our January sermon and study series we will be learning from a new book written by one of our own annual conference staff titled, Get Their Name. This book teaches us not just how to be welcoming, but challenges us to extend our friendship circle to people who do not yet believe and shows us how we can invite them to join us or better yet take our fellowship to where they might naturally go. Many of us have discovered the comfort that care and fellowship of Waggoners Church can be in difficult times. Can you imagine the number of people in our area who do not have that kind of comfort and support who need it? If we wait for them to find us, we will never see them. We need to discover ways to bring this good news to them. Join us each Sunday in January and in the Bridge Sunday School Class to learn, not just how to get their name, but how to extend our friendships and make disciples. A Prayer to Make Disciples By Pastor Rick God of grace, when we were unaware, you come to find us; when we are lost, you scramble to discover us. God of mercy, when we stray, your rod and staff lead us back on track; when we run away, you patiently look for our return. Give us courage to fulfill your command to make disciples. Give us courage to seek the unfamiliar and make new friends. Give us patience to listen to the needs of others. Give us wisdom to know when a word brings healing, when a no shows understanding, and when a pat on the shoulder encourages. Help us to understand that while all may not receive, sometimes a no means not yet. Give us courage not only to invite, but to go where new disciples may be. And, in those places, make us a visible presence of the Holy Spirit that we might draw all people unto you. Teach us to make disciples, In Jesus name. Amen A
3 The Waggonette page 3 January begins the season of Epiphany. During Epiphany we discover the many ways Jesus was revealed as God s son beginning with the visitation of the wise men. During this month we will share in a sermon series based on the Book Get Their Name which will teach us how to share our witness, and invite new people to a relationship with Christ and our church simply by building friendships. 4 The Waggonette page 4 Women s Prayer Breakfast Spiritual Growth Activites Bridge Sunday School Class On Jan. 6 we will conclude our Study of Andy Stanley s book, White Flag which encourages us not to run from God, but to run toward God s purpose for our life all based on the book of Jonah. We will then learn how we can extend the love and care of our Church to those who may not know Christ as we study Kay Kotan s book, Get their name. More information on this is on page 2 of our newsletter. Men s Prayer Breakfast The Men s prayer breakfast meets on the fourth Saturday of the Month. This month we ll meet at 7:30 AM on January 26 th. This month we continue using a study by former NFL Quarterback Tim Tebow: Shaken: Discovering Your True Identity in the Midst of God s Storms. We ll discover when life may not be going the way you plan, how God s plan might be infinately greater. God loves you just the way you are, but he refuses to leave you there. He wants you to be just like Jesus. Can you think of a better offer? Jesus felt no guilt; God wants you to feel no guilt. Jesus had no bad habits; God wants to do away with yours. Jesus had no fears; God wants the same for you. Jesus had no anxiety about death; you needn't either. God's desire, his plan, his ultimate goal is to make you into the image of Christ. But how does this change occur? And why does the change seem so slow? If God wants me to be just like Jesus, why do I still seem just like me? In Just Like Jesus, Max Lucado helps you answer these questions. He helps you understand God's wonderful ways of transformation. Join us for this exciting study the 2 nd Saturday of each month at 7:30 AM. For further questions or information please contact Nancy Hoffman. Bible Study Begins Again in February In February our Bible Study classes begin again on Mondays at 6:30 PM and Tuesdays at 9:00 AM. We will be studying Simon Peter: Flawed but Faithful by Adam Hamilton.
