2 Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give a reason for the hope that you have. [1 Peter 3:15] PAGE 2 CONTAGIOUS - FOR THOSE NOT YET HERE Evangelism. It s one of the highest values in the church and one of the least practiced. So says Mark Mittleberg in his book Becoming a Contagious Church. This reminds us that telling people about Jesus and inviting them into a lifechanging relationship with Him is really the primary reason for the existence of the Church. All that we do worship, discipleship, ministry and service should be undergirded by the desire to tell others about Jesus. Weekend worship, children and youth ministries, Food Pantry and Community Meal, Roosevelt Middle School partnership, National Night Out, and all the rest provides us an opportunity to share the love of Jesus with others both in deed and in word. In non-contagious churches, people believe that the church exists just for them and so it thinks, plans, and programs to maintain itself. But contagious churches are different for they understand that the Church exists For those who are not yet here. This attitude results in a shift in thinking, planning, and programming that asks how will those who aren t here yet find their way here? How will the coming generations, our children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren get here if, in this time and at this moment, we fail to proclaim the Good News of Jesus to those already present in our community? If not now, then who will be left to tell of Jesus to the next generation? Evangelism requires a significant amount of energy and effort to accomplish. The problem arises in the average church that it is just easier to maintain what we are already doing rather than to make the shift to being more evangelistic. The well-known phrase, Speed of the leader, speed of the team describes this reality. The hard reality for me is that I have not made evangelism a priority and so, as a church, this has therefore not been a priority either. This must change for me and for our church because our mission is to make disciples for the sake of the Kingdom of God and for those who are not yet connected to Jesus in a life-saving relationship with Him. This month we celebrate Pentecost, the day when the Holy Spirit came with power upon the disciples and they began to proclaim the Good News to the entire world. The Book of Acts tells the story of the ongoing evangelism of the first century world both successes and failures; triumphs and troubles. We stand today, 2,000 years later, on the legacy of those first contagious Christians who proclaimed the Gospel with boldness and humility and joy even in times of great trial. If this same desire resonates in your soul, I want to hear from you on how we can work together to raise the evangelistic temperature of our church for the sake of those not yet here. My prayer is that each one of us would continue to grow in our faith in Jesus Christ so that we might live out Peter s admonition, Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give a reason for the hope that you have. 1 Peter 3:15. The tournament is scheduled for Monday, June 19 at the Riverside Golf Course, Route 19, just north of Cambridge Springs. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit EUMA s The Refuge, an emergency shelter for homeless families with children. Shoe Collection Our shoe drive fundraiser is underway. Last year over $13,000 was raised to support the ongoing work of the Erie UM Alliance and All God s Children Ministries. Shoes in any condition are accepted but they must be in pairs (no singles allowed)! Contact Kathy Durst ( ) with questions. Our goal is again 50 bags (1,250 pairs) of shoes. SMILING Smiling is infectious; you catch it like the flu. When someone smiled at me today, I started smiling too. I passed around a corner and someone saw my grin. When he smiled, I realized I had passed it on to him. I thought about that smile and then I realized its worth. A single smile, just like mine, could travel around the earth. So if you feel a smile begin, don't leave it undetected. Let's start an epidemic quick and get the world infected. Author Unknown PAGE 3

4 PAGE 4 With Gratitude There are so many people to thank for the love and support my church family provided after Bob died. Pastor Matt gave a perfectly beautiful memorial service. Roger and Pastor Shirley provided wonderful music. All the family and umpires and players got to see why we are all so proud of Glenwood Church. We also want to thank you for the beautiful crafted cross from Wendell August Forge what a beautiful keepsake. Thank you for everything. The Robert Kenny Family The prayer shawl is just beautiful. I love it! Jean Kenny The Prayer Shawl Ministry would like to thank Pastor Shirley for the donation of yarn and the donor who donated money to our ministry. We will use that money to package/ship the shawls. Thank you. Prayer Shawl Ministry We would like to thank all of the church family for your kind words, prayers, cards, generous donations, and hospitality of a bereavement meal. A sign recently viewed read, The church isn t some place you go to, it s a family you belong to. We have experienced God s love through all of you. A special thank you to Pastor Matt and Pastor Shirley for your support of our family through this difficult time. Love, the family of Steven Heilmane LOCAL MISSION I want to send you a big Thank You from xxxchurch. Thank you for your prayers and your generous donation to my recent mission trip to attend the Exxxotica convention in Denver, Colorado. I wouldn t have been able to share the love of Jesus in this unique atmosphere without you. Due to your contributions I was able to converse with members of the adult entertainment world where I got to know them as people and share with them that God loves them. Dan Sheldon Thank you for your donation of $95 to EUMA. Your donation will help us to shelter, feed, and minister to homeless families and individuals. We appreciate your prayers and your partnership in our mission. God bless you as you have blessed our neighbors in need. Kurt B. Crays, MDiv. EUMA Thank you for the generous donation of $25 made on behalf of Glenwood UM Church. Nathaniel Greenway Wesley Woods WORLD MISSION What a joy to be serving the Lord, especially on a missionary standpoint, whether you are on the fields as Cloraine and Enock Deroseney are or simply at home praying and sharing your financial blessings with those who are on the fields. Because you have been faithful to support The Good Samaritan Project of Haiti, we now have the church fully rebuilt, plus five units to lodge our 82 orphans and a suitable place built for Cloraine and Enock to live with extra rooms for a couple of visitors at any time. As we give praises to the Lord we do thank you for your prayers and for your donations as genuine demonstrations of your love and compassion. A special prayer request for a young man named Jean Renaud Dufresne who has been recently diagnosed with a brain tumor. Pastor Jean Enock Deroseney Walk for a Healthy Community - June 3 Take steps to end homelessness in NW PA! Sign up to walk with EUMA in the Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community. Scientists think that your nose can recognize a trillion scents. What s your favorite smell? Did you know that humpback whales eat around 5,000 pounds of ittybitty, teeny-tiny fish every single day? If you could eat a mountain of one thing, what would you choose? Some scientists say that bees are responsible for about 1 out of every 3 bites of food you eat. God made His creation wonderfully complex. VBS is only two months away now and there are a lot of different ways you can help. It really is the best week of the summer. It s an exciting way to help kids discover that they re made by God and built for a purpose. I can still remember many of the fun activities from VBS so long ago and the impact it had on my life. Blitz Build - June 2-3 SeaWolves Game - July 2 Look for the posted sign-up sheets for areas where you can impact a child for Christ. I can guarantee you will have as much fun as the kids at Maker Fun Factory. PAGE 8 Come, be a part of All God s Children Ministries Blitz Build June 2-3.
