CROP Hunger Walks help to provide food and water, as well as resources that empower people to meet their own needs. From seeds and tools to wells and water systems, the key is people working together to identify their own development priorities, their strengths and their needs - something Church World Service has learned through 70 years of working in partnership around the world. Currently, well over 2,000 communities across the U.S. join in more than 1,000 CROP Hunger Walks each year. More than five million CROP Hunger Walkers have participated in more than 36,000 CROP Hunger together then have a cookout picnic and hang out afterwards. Walks in the last two decades alone. Last year we received over $60,000 in donations, 25% of which was given to 25 of Erie s local food programs. 2 HERE OR THERE? 2017 Sun Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Transition - the process or a period of changing from one state or condition to another. PAGE 2 Transition - the process or a period of changing from one state or condition to another. I ve been thinking a lot about transitions and a huge reason is the reality that after almost eighteen years with us, we will be launching Anna into college and the world later this month (some of you can relate to this). The following week, I will be headed to Canada to finish cleaning up the last part of my grandparent s home. For all the childhood memories made in that neck of God s creation, it means that I probably will have no reason to ever go back again. Transitions come to us in many ways. For some, it s seeing the old Central/Tech Memorial being made new again as Erie HS. For others, it is the change in relationships brought on by death or divorce. In the church, we have faced the transitions of saying goodbye as our friends and pew partners move away from Erie for retirement or to pursue a new job opportunity. A philosopher once said that you never step into the same river twice and while that may be true, it doesn t make it easy. A river versus my daughter leaving for college are very different! After having led three congregations over the past twenty years, I often have been the tip of the spear at helping create, direct, and sustain transition for the sake of making disciples of Jesus Christ. It has not always been easy as there have always been those who are content with being here, (wherever that seems to be). They would often tell me Pastor, we like being here we don t want to go there (wherever that might be). So where do I find my courage now that I m the one wanting to hold onto here instead of going there? I m reminded of the story of the Exodus when Moses sends spies to check out the Promised Land and bring back a report. The land is great but filled with a host of obstacles, like large warriors and fortified cities. While ten of the spies argue against invading the land, Joshua and Caleb argue that the people should move forward and tackle those obstacles. Caleb offers these wise words, We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it Numbers 13:30. No matter what the season of transition we face, Caleb reminds us that it is important, and even healthy, to move forward. The people agreed with the majority opinion and turned back, losing their lives and 40 years by their refusal to move on. Transition is hardest where it impacts us the deepest. But we don t have to do it alone. God is always with us. Caleb and Joshua get to enter the Promised Land and take hold of God s promised blessings, albeit 40 years later, because they embraced the transition. Sometimes, as hard as it is to believe, that transition might just be the thing we need to help us go even deeper in our walk with Jesus. I pray that you will lean upon God for your strength as He goes with you from here to there. You may register online for the Shades Beach location or, you can mail your registration (available in the church office) with your check to: EUMA, 1033 E. 26th St., Erie, PA I am so thankful for a great week of VBS. It wouldn t have been possible without all those who built, painted, gave, prayed and were crew and station leaders. God used each person in a unique, special way to share His love with kids. Sometimes when working on a big event, it seems like I m trying to make a puzzle and the pieces don t fit together or there s a piece missing. Then I remember that in the Bible it says: For I know the plans I have for you. says the Lord. (Jeremiah 29:11). Even when we can t see it all fitting together, God has a plan and His plans are always better than mine. God made each of us with an important plan and purpose in mind. Remember that God knows the big picture and has an important part for each of us to play in his mighty, amazing plans. THANK YOU for the important role you ve played during VBS in the life of a child. PAGE 8 LIFE NWPA Neighborhood Pop Up August pm Living Independence For the Elderly (LIFE) presents a Neighborhood Pop Up featuring free food, health screenings, and information on Thursday, August 17 from 5-7pm at Glenwood s gym. If you have questions, you may contact Selena King at: sking@lifenwpa.org The Story Coming this Fall Beginning September 17, our church will embark on multi-generational curriculum called The Story. All ages will engage with the same Bible stories each week but at their own learning level. It will be a great opportunity for families to discuss together what they are learning and grow together. It s ideal for those who know a lot or a little about the Bible itself. Here is a synopsis: The Story is an abridged, chronological Bible that reads like a novel. There are no verse references, and Scripture segments are seamlessly woven together with transition text into a single grand narrative. For those intimidated or overwhelmed by the unabridged Bible, The Story helps people understand God s Word more fully and engage with it more easily. People of all ages will be swept up in the story of God s love and God s plan for their lives. Pastor Shirley National Night Out Tuesday, August 1-6-9pm Mark your calendars now for our second time hosting this nationwide community-building and anti-crime initiative. We are welcoming back community partners from last year like the Erie Playhouse, Erie Code Enforcement, Christ Community Church, Bonnell s Auto Group and Life Thru Music. Crazy Monkey is providing inflatables for the kids. A new addition to our stage this year is Capt. Magic who will do, yes, magic! Our role as the church will be to be good hosts, meet our neighbors and have some conversations. This will be an all hands on deck event so I m hoping to see many of you here. Talk to Scott Bonnell or Pastor Matt if you have questions. PAGE 5
