DEDICATION This notebook and its contents are a collaboration of many experienced individuals, programs, and organizations. Words to Works would not be possible without the prayerful, preparatory, and provisioning support of North Main Street Baptist Church, Florida Baptist Convention, Jacksonville Baptist Association, and the North America Mission Board. This manual could not have been written without the personal mentorship of Reverend Bob Galbraith who served the Florida Baptist Convention and Brotherhood Department for over Twenty years. Pappa G., as everyone called him, invested in myself and countless other men, and taught us to mobilize and mature people to share Jesus Christ. Because of serving with him and others like Max Caddenhead, who served as the Evangelism Director for the Florida Baptist Convention, I learned that the days are numbered and to work while it is day because there is coming a day when it is night. This compilation of resources has come from multitude of places and in fact there is no way to give adequate credit to all who have shared their talents with me. I say thanks!!! I say thanks to the schools I attended like Gulf Shore Bible College, Baptist College of Florida, and New Orleans Seminary. Thanks to the encouragement of my spiritual family and mentors like Dr. John Sullivan, Cecil Seagul, John Boone, David Garrett, Tim Patterson, Ben Goldsmith, Bobby Taylor, Mark Garner, and the list of spiritual giants go on. Thanks for the school I have attended for 6 years of various experiences with North Main Street Baptist Church and Words to Works. These ministries have contributed to the end process of this manual for mission groups and student groups to serve the urban challenges. There is, however, a spiritual recognition that this book is indebted to and it is the sacrificial gift that Teresa Phoenix (my wife of almost 20 years) has given in order that the Gospel is shared, preached and promoted. Her gift of patience and sharing of her husband to students and churches will never be forgotten by her soul mate or her Savior. Thank you my co-servant. It is my heart that this annual will be help to many and a legacy that I leave to my children, who I hope and pray, will continue my passion for mobilizing the body of Christ by stretching them outside their comfort zone, sharing Jesus, and meeting community needs. My children Jessica, Melissa Lee, and Elijah Daniel have truly lived not only in the inner city, but with the inner city. They have given their meals to the poor, loved the unlovely, and hugged the dirty. They are my heroes. Special thanks go to Tavia Weatherly, Carrie Lawson, Sabrina Patterson, Dave Humphrey, Leslie and Angela Trigg, and many other unsung heroes for their tireless efforts and their sharing of their time to compose and contribute to the expressions and the heart of Words to Works Ministries. These and so many more have truly lived Words to Works James 2:14. May many more have this heart. Pastor Nick.

Hello Student Missionary! Greetings from North Main Street Baptist Church and Words to Works Ministries. I would like to thank you for choosing Words to Works Ministries for your mission adventure this year. Last year, we were able to minister to over 1500 children plus many adults, and we have determined that you and others like you will minister to over 4000 people this year. I believe that God has a special plan for you and your group this year. Image God using you to be part of this miraculous feat! This notebook is designed to help you prepare for all that will happen during your week with us. There is information to help you and your group prepare physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Your adult leader will be meeting with you on a regular basis from now until the time you come to equip you for the mission God wants you to accomplish. But our prayer is that you will do everything you can to gear up for the adventure of your life. You can begin to pray for several things: 1. Pray for Words to Works Ministries as we prepare for your visit. Pray that the Lord will continue to open doors of service, guide us through the details of the projects and continue to have His hand upon our ministry. 2. Pray for the children and adults that will be ministered to while you are here. Pray that their spiritual, emotional, physical and mental needs will be met. Pray that they will come into a loving relationship with our Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ. 3. Pray that you and your group will be stretched and changed by the Holy Spirit while you are His hands and feet. 4. Pray that each person in your group will be flexible 5. Pray that you will be able to experience a fresh anointing from the Lord. There are so many things to pray for, to prepare for and to be excited about! I know that God is going to turn your world upside down while you re here. You and your friends will never be the same! We look forward to seeing you soon. In the Master s Service, Pastor Nick Phoenix Director of Words to Works Ministries 7137 North Main Street Jacksonville, FL Phone: (904) Fax: (904) wordstoworks@cxp.com

HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL This manual is designed to be used by the local church who desires to have a Community Day Camp in their community. It outlines a step by step guide in planning, conducting, and evaluating the day camp. Many helpful articles are included in the Appendices to assist the leader with the training of the volunteers, selection of the literature, games, craft ideas, songs, and aids in witnessing to children. First let s look at some important issues related to having Community Day Camp. WORKING WITH CULTURALLY AND ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED CHILDREN Who are they? Sounds like a strange question, but one that must be asked and answered especially if you have never worked in the inner city. Basically, kids are kids! They are human beings who are born, breath air, grow up, and learn a tremendous amount of knowledge by the time they are 5 years old. They have some of the same needs, physically emotionally, socially, and spiritually as children who are born to parents in the suburbs.

SPECIAL CONCEPTS TO PONDER How should you work with these children? Here are some suggestions: Often you must overcome your own hostility, suspicion, and mistrust. Watch the church jargon. Many children will not understand phrases like get saved or asked Jesus into your heart or nailed on a cross. Find other ways to explain these ideas to children. Don t talk down to them and don t patronize people. This communicates your distrust and dis- ease with them. That is not love in action! Watch out for middle class concepts to which the children cannot relate. Remember where the children live and what that world is like for them. Don t be shocked at their language, at least they are communicating to you. Accept them where they are, and help them through grace, to get where they need to be. *** Most of all remember that all children need love and attention. Be imitators of Christ.

MISSION PROJECT FOCUS Focus is to see something in an overall view and move to a clear picture of the object. This mission trip has already been viewed from a distance because you have decided to make it reality. The fun part is yet to come. To see the big picture is the start and now you will need to take one step at a time to reach that goal. Below we have some ideas to help you think and prepare for this project of obedience. Describe the group of people who will be your focus: What exposure has your project group already had to the gospel? Why are they lost or unchurched? What obstacles keep them form hearing and accepting the gospel? What obstacles will you face in trying to build relationships and share the gospel? What ministry approaches do you expect your team to use? Musical presentation Face painting Play games Puppetry Make animal balloons Quiz games Bible distribution Clowning Drama presentation You want to use your talents and imagination to make it special for the children. You must remember that you will be dealing with inner-city children. These children are street smart and will see through any attitude except a humble spirit. We also believe these children have as much to teach you, as you have to teach them. PLEASE REMEMBER your preparation for this trip should include your spiritual preparation. Make sure all of your group have a testimony prepared and can share the gospel, before they come to share the gospel with your focus group.

PERSONAL PROJECT FOCUS Focus is, to see something in an overall view and move to a clear picture of the object. Personal project is much closer to home. Missions are nice, but you have people who you see everyday, know and unknown, that are lost and going to HELL. Set you focus on these people also. Jesus died on that cross for everyone in the world. Jesus loves everyone of them and we should love them also. Our Lord told us to touch those around us first. Make a list of the focus people: What exposure have these focus people already had to the gospel? Why are they lost or not in church? What obstacles keep them form hearing and accepting the gospel? What obstacles will you face in trying to build relationships and share the gospel? Witnessing begins with your life. People put a great deal of weight on what they see. Does your life draw people to want to know Jesus? If people see a joyful and peaceful spirit in you, they will ask you why! 1 Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

OUR PLAN OF ACTION Being prepared for your missions trip lays the foundation for a powerful and rewarding experience. The form and ideas here are just suggestions. Take these ideas and expand them to fit your needs. The form on the next page is designed to help you keep track of tasks that need to be completed. After you ve brainstormed your ideas and narrowed down the list to the ideas that will best accomplish your goal, log them onto the form on the next page. You can also look at the checklist page for things that should be completed by a certain date before you leave. There is a place to keep track of the person who will be in charge of seeing that the task is accomplished. A date the task is due. You know that the date due is not always the completion date. You may want to make a copy of the form before you write on it. As you fill up the form make copies for all involved so they can keep their prayers and efforts focused on completing all tasks.

OUR PLAN OF ACTION PERSON DATE DATE TASK INCHARGE DUE COMPLETED

SPECIAL NOTES FOR LEADERS PACKETS INSURANCE Words to Works Ministry and North Main Street Baptist Church are a secondary insurance. You need to make sure that all your students have proof of insurance incase of any mishaps and accidents. After their personal insurance covers cost, your church or organization s insurance will pick up the remaining expenses. If there are any additional costs, that is when our insurance will cover it. So it is vital that all participants can prove insurance and that you have a copy of that proof. AND TELEPHONE AVAILABILITY and telephone usage will be limited to adults and on a necessity basis only. It is suggested and strongly encouraged only once at time of arrival, midweek and departure. Students must bring a prepaid calling card or call collect during allotted times and will have a limit of three minutes per one call. We will provide an address that family members can send one way messages to their student missionaries. Families may messages to wordstoworks@cxp.com. Students and participants are not to bring a cellular phone or beeper. MENU ITEMS You will notice a tentative menu in your notebook. Please be aware that this schedule may and probably will change due to service staff and participants. It is only a TENTATIVE schedule. If there is a major issue concerning dietary needs, please contact the center. TEACHING MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES It is the responsibility of your group to supply teaching materials and most of the needed supplies for your Community Day Camp curriculum. You will need to have an action plan for the week and the materials to go with that action plan. Old Sunday school or Vacation Bible School material works well. If you need ideas, please call or us any questions. ** You will need to make sure that all camp materials are adjusted to the Inner City Community.
