1 Learning to Walk with Jesus Discipleship Booklet 1

2 Glory of Christ Fellowship 707 Highway 10, Suite 300 Elk River, Minnesota

3 How to Use this Booklet The material in this booklet was adapted by permission from LeRoy Eims, The Lost Art of Disciple Making (Zondervan, 1978), Topics 2, 3, 4, 5, 28, and 29 were added by Charles Handren and David Fergus. Our aim in developing this material, along with LeRoy Eims, is to help more mature Christians teach newer Christians how to walk with Jesus. The biblical word for this is discipleship and the practice of it has endured from the days of Jesus to now (Matthew 28:18-20). Our joy in Christ depends, in large part, on whether or not we engage in the process of discipleship because we were created by Christ to be rivers rather than reservoirs. When we invest in others what Jesus has invested in us, our joy in Him increases all the more. When we keep to ourselves what Jesus has invested in us, our souls grow stale and our joy in Him depletes. So whether you are a long-time veteran follower of Christ or a brand new believer, we commend to you the life-long process of being discipled and discipling others, and we offer you this tool as one means by which you can do so. If you are a mature follower of Christ looking to disciple another, we suggest that you take the following steps in the use of this tool: 1. Ask Jesus to bring you someone whom you can disciple. 2. Schedule a regular meeting time with this person and ensure that both of you take it very seriously: show up on time and be prepared. 3. Thoroughly work through each lesson in advance, applying the truths contained therein to your own life. It s okay if you re not applying every aspect of these lessons to your life at this moment because allowing your mentee to watch you develop as a disciple is a crucial part of the discipleship process. We are, in truth, all disciples of Jesus Christ, continually learning from our Master. Plan how you will guide your mentee through each lesson, clearly communicate your plan, and expect him or her to complete any assignments you give in a timely manner. The topics have been arranged in a particular manner but you need not proceed through them in order. For example, if the one you are discipling has already developed the habit of a daily quiet time, then there may be no need to complete that lesson. Or if the one your discipling is struggling with a particular issue, like prayer, you may want to begin your journey together by covering Topic 30 rather than Topic 1. If you are a new believer and are longing to be discipled, take this booklet and ask the Lord to bring you someone who will walk through it with you. You could just work your way through the topics on your own, and if you must then do. But discipleship has much to do with being in godly relationships and so we strongly encourage you to find a mentor. Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen (Jude 1:24-25). With joy in Christ, Charles Handren and Dave Fergus
