1 30 December 2018 The first Sunday of Christmas; [BCP] the Sunday after Christmas Day Welcome A warm welcome to everyone, and especially if you are new or visiting. Do please stay on for drinks and to meet people after the 9.30 and services and keep this welcome sheet for your prayers this week. Prayer with the Anglican Communion we pray for the diocese of Kyushu in Japan; for Archbishop Justin; for Bishops Tim, Jonathan and David the Sisters of St Andrew in Brussels, among them Sister Katie Seal our mission giving: 500 for Embrace the Middle East, improving the lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged people, regardless of their faith or nationality our Prime Minister and all working on the best way forward for Brexit give thanks for the extraordinary truth that God lives on earth, through Christ, in every person; pray grace to see Christ in one another the priceless gifts of hope and joy hallmarks of being Christian; may we be bearers of hope and joy, with a vision of the endless new opportunities God gives our personal resolutions as a new year begins, that growth in our spiritual awareness may be a high priority; those who are considering Confirmation the Nightshelter, Trinity Centre, Basics Bank, street pastors, emergency services, and all who care for the most vulnerable R. S. Steel and Partners and all funeral directors, whose care at times of need makes such a difference; those who live with the pain of not knowing whether loved ones are alive or dead the unwell: Caroline Behan, Christopher and Clifford Browne, Judy Golding, Andrew James, Julia Jones, Laura Liepins, Anna McKenzie (age 11), Emma and Mark Miller, Kate Morgan, Les Scott and Jane Seal (Peter s mother); all awaiting appointments or treatments those who have died recently; all who live with the pain of untimely death; God s comfort for their families and friends and all who remember loved ones Please feel free to put prayer requests on the board at the back of church or them to admin@stmatthewstpaul.org. Amen. 1 Samuel 2: 18 20, 26 [p. 762] Samuel was ministering before the Lord, a boy wearing a linen ephod. His mother used to make for him a little robe and take it to him each year, when she went up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. Then Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, and say, May the Lord repay you with children by this woman for the gift that she made to the Lord ; and then they would return to their home. Now the boy Samuel continued to grow both in stature and in favour with the Lord and with the people. Luke 2: [p. 764] Now every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up as usual for the festival. When the festival was ended and they started to return, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. Assuming that he was in the group of travellers, they went a day s journey. Then they started to look for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, Child, why have you treated us like this? Look, your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety. He said to them, Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father s house? But they did not understand what he said to them. Then he went down with them and came to

And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favour. Heavenly Father, whose blessed Son shared at Nazareth the life of an earthly home: help your Church to live as one family, united in love and obedience, and bring us all at last to our home in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord. 5 Coming up Space in the City The New Year series of talks, The Annunciation: A Pilgrim s Quest, will be given by Mark Byford at the United Church on Wednesdays 23 and 30 January and 6 February, pm (no entrance charge). Bugsy Malone musical workshop at on Sat 2 February, 9 am 4.30 pm, followed by a performance at 5 pm. The leader will be Bronwen Dixie, a dance teacher and choreographer who works at Chichester Stage School and in musical theatre. Open to all children and young people, Year 1 upwards (no church links required). Singing and drama will be interspersed with activities and games. To take part, please contact Mary Copping, , youth@stmatthewstpaul.org. There are lots of children signed up already; it s proving very popular. We hope that many from Western, our church school, will be involved, as they have been with shows and music/drama workshops in the past. The Bible in England and the Bible in English We re delighted to announce a public lecture at on Thurs 7 February, 7 pm, by Professor Christopher Mulvey, about the powerful influence the Bible has exerted on the English language. This is an exciting collaboration between the English Project and the parish, held specifically to raise funds for Building for Life. The Winchester Connection On Fri 22 February, Peter and Irene Casey present another imaginative wine-tasting session, this time based on their local heroes. Notices Christingle The collection for the Children s Society at our Christingle service raised 281 inc. gift aid (2017: 308). Toddler group is such a lovely offering to the community, with new children coming each week. Would you be able to help out on a Thursday morning between 9.30 and 11.30, on a rota or one-off basis to help set up, make tea/coffee/snacks, take part in craft activities, or chat to local parents/grandparents and carers? Winchester women s refuge A safe haven for women and children fleeing domestic abuse. Please help by leaving towels and toiletries in the box at the back of church. Plastic bottle tops Help reduce plastic waste and raise money for Lanterns, the nursery school on Bereweeke Road. Please put washed type 2 or 4 plastic tops in the crate at the back of. Community Day 2019 We have a date: Sat 11 May; we have a focus for fund-raising: Building for Life; we have lots of volunteers full of goodwill.
