1 The Wiverton News from your village churches and chapels Aug/Sep 2018 Rest and Re-creation Holidays and Holy-days 1
2 Re-creation and Holy-days Dear Friends Now that the schools have broken up for the summer, the thoughts of many will turn to family holidays. I recall my own family holidays as a youngster going to a hired static caravan in Skeggy or Mablethorpe with Mum and Dad and my three elder siblings. I found a photograph recently taken in Skegness in It shows the six of us walking along the main road, all wearing cardigans (Skegness is bracing!) which Mum would have knitted for us in the months prior to the holiday: zip-ups for the boys and buttons for us girls. My eldest brother, he d have been 9, is wearing long trousers (like Dad); my sister (aged 7) is in shorts as is my other brother (shortly to start school). And what about me? Well I am wearing a gathered skirt with a waist band and braces (much needed by a 2 and half year old) which Mum would have made for me. So no change there then; you ll have rarely seen me in trousers, let alone shorts. I seem to recall we travelled by bus. It was only when Dad got his first car (it was actually a Jowett van) that in future years we would go to the south coast, to Devon and Cornwall. We all loved the seaside but my shorts wearing brother is the only one who has made the south coast his home and only in the last 15 or so years. For me, those holidays were lovely; often they were only a week until mum went back to work part-time when I was ten, when two weeks became possible. They were fun for us as children, seeing new places, discovering new things about the world around us and enjoying being a family together. For Mum and Dad it was a change of scenery, of mood, a break from routine and time with us. Holidays were, of course, originally holy days, days set apart for rest and re-creation, but now recreation. The rec, as we called it, was the place with the swing and the slide where we went to play and many s the time came home with bruises, bumps and grazes. But it was fun, it was outdoors and it was good exercise even if we thought it was just playing. However we didn t invent recreation and, as it s me writing this, you won t be surprised when I say that it was God who invented it because he is the creator. He created us in his own image and shows us, by his example, in resting on the seventh day, that we need to rest in order to be re-created. And Jesus example of finding somewhere quiet to pray in the busy-ness of his day is the other example to follow. Holy days and holidays help us to be re-created and I pray that you will find both rest and re-creation over the next few weeks; that there will be time with your family and friends; time to see new things and new places; time perhaps to reminisce. I know, sadly, that for some of you, your childhood experience may not have been the lovely one mine was, so I pray that you will allow God to re-create you this summer because that, in his love, is what he wants for you. Every blessing: Bronwen Gamble, Rector of the Parish of Wiverton in the Vale. 2
