5 SERMON TEXT: Luke 22:

6 A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. And he said to them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves. 6

7 You are those who have stayed with me in my trials, and I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 7

8 Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers. Peter said to him, Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death. Jesus said, I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me. 8

9 And he said to them, When I sent you out with no moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything? They said, Nothing. He said to them, But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one. For I tell you that this Scripture must be fulfilled in me: And he was numbered with the transgressors. For what is written about me has its fulfillment. And they said, Look, Lord, here are two swords. And he said to them, It is enough. Luke 22:24-38 ESV 9

11 Part of the sheer grace of the gospel is precisely the way in which God s work goes ahead despite the human failure all around. And that is strangely comforting, whether in the first or the twenty-first century. - N.T. Wright

16 the one who serves. - Jesus reminds them that He has come and served - as they are arguing about who is most important He is focussing on His model of service as love - highlights the exchange that He is going to make for our sake and for His glory

17 Be Ready

19 Be Ready - Jesus is preparing them for the difficult times ahead - He will no longer be with them in the same way - as He begins to face this trial they will begin to embark on their faith journey of trusting in His work

20 Their journey, as well as all Christians who have come after them, is filled with both physical and spiritual difficulty.

21 And he said to them, When I sent you out with no moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything? They said, Nothing. 23 Remember

25 Remember - we are not alone in our struggle, never

26 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died more than that, who was raised to life is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Romans 8:34

27 Remember - we are not alone in our struggle, never - Jesus is praying for us, interceding for us - God is FOR us

28 As we encounter the reality of life all around us personally and globally let us find great peace in knowing that God is WITH us and God is FOR us. He has shown us how to persevere; through loving and serving each other and the world.

31 There is nothing we have that we have not received; all we have and are belong to God bought with the blood of Jesus. To spend everything on ourselves, and to give without sacrifice is the way of the world that the Father cannot abide.

32 But generosity is the way of those who call Christ their Lord; who love him with free hearts, and serve him with renewed minds; who withstand the delusion of riches that chokes the word; whose hearts are in heaven, and not on earth.

33 We are determined to increase in generosity until it can be said that there is no needy person among us. We are determined to be faithful stewards of such a little thing as money that Christ may trust us with true riches.

34 Above all things, we are determined to be generous because our Father is generous. It is the delight of His daughters and sons to share their Father s traits, and to show what He is like to all the world.
