Luke 22:24-38 (ESV) A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. And he said to them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves.
Luke 22:24-38 (ESV) You are those who have stayed with me in my trials, and I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers. Peter said to him, Lord I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.
Luke 22:24-38 (ESV) Jesus said, I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me. And he said to them, When I sent you out with no moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything? They said, Nothing. He said to them, But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one. For I tell you that this scripture must be fulfilled in me:
And he was numbered with the transgressors. For what is written about me has its fulfillment. And they said, Look, Lord, here are two swords. And he said to them, It is enough. Luke 22:24-38 (ESV) This the the Word of the Lord - Amen

Life with the End in Mind
Context
Jesus was preparing for fulfillment
Three conversations at dinner: 1. Dispute over greatness
Again, perception was not reality

He triumphed over sin not by taking up power but by serving sacrificially. He won through losing everything. This is a complete reversal of the world s way of thinking, which values power, recognition, wealth, and status. The gospel, then, creates a new kind of servant community, with people who live out an entirely alternate way of being human. -Timothy Keller

Tragically, Pharisees, chief priests, and others simply had too much invested in their own view of reality to respond to the prophetic challenge that God brought to their personal lives and precious cultural institutions through the words and ministry of Jesus of Nazareth. -Joseph Hellerman

God calls us to live a completely different life day by day, not to earn his grace, but because his grace has already been showered on us. -Thomas Payne
Three conversations at dinner: 1. Dispute over greatness 2. Peter s denial foretold
The reason why many are still troubled, still seeking, still making little forward progress is because they haven t yet come to the end of themselves. We re still trying to give orders, and interfering with God s work within us. -A.W. Tozer
Failure does not have to be the last word
The most helpful man is he who himself has been tempted, who has passed, not without scars, through the fight of faith. -H.D.M. Spence
Three conversations at dinner: 1. Dispute over greatness 2. Peter s denial foretold 3. Scripture fulfilled
Do not depend on the hope of results. You may have to face the fact that your work will be apparently worthless and even achieve no result at all, if not perhaps results opposite to what you expect. As you get used to this idea, you start more and more to concentrate not on the results, but on the value, the rightness, the truth of the work itself. You gradually struggle less and less for an idea and more and more for specific people. In the end, it is the reality of personal relationship that saves everything. -Thomas Merton
The common theme: Live with the End in Mind

Has this world been so kind to you that you should leave with regret? There are better things ahead than any we leave behind. -C.S. Lewis
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:1-2
