1 December 2018 From the Pastor s Desk As we prepare for Christmas and look forward to all of the joy and reverence this season brings, I want to spend just a few lines writing about the New Year. As most of you are aware, our church recently approved a sabbatical for me from December 25th until February 3rd. I have been asked by several people to offer some further explanation about the reason for and purpose of a sabbatical. The purpose of a sabbatical is to take some extended time away from normal vocational responsibilities to pursue Christ, to rest, and to spend time in study and contemplation. It is important that I (or any other pastor) serve regularly out of the overilow of what God is teaching me and doing in my own life. In the course of pastoral ministry, it can be difiicult to spend time studying for personal spiritual growth when you are studying and preparing to teach or preach multiple times per week every week. The reason I requested and was granted a sabbatical is that I felt that after 18 years of vocational ministry and 11 ½ years here as the Senior Pastor, I could be more faithful and effective as pastor if I spent some time away from our church seeking the Lord and growing in my own spiritual journey. I am not burned out. I am not depressed. I still love being your pastor. But, I am not above the need to be taught, to be preached to, and to continue to grow in my own spiritual walk. After I Iinish my responsibilities on Christmas Eve, I will be away from our church until February 3rd. By Craig Thompson I am not moving, I ll still be around town and might even make an appearance in my ofiice occasionally, but I do not plan to attend any worship services or other scheduled events. During my sabbatical, I will listen to others preach, I will focus on studying preaching and worldview and reworking my dissertation. I will rest. I hope to spend some time alone with Angela and to invest in my kids. I also hope to return with a fresh vision for what the next 5 years of ministry look like for Malvern Hill. Thank you for your willingness to grant me this time away from the day-to-day ministry of Malvern Hill. I look forward to digging in to God s Word together through the month of December as we celebrate Christ s birth. I am coniident that you all will be blessed by the preaching you will hear in January, and I am excited about what I will bring back to you on February 3rd, God bless you all, and Merry Christmas from me and the rest of the Thompsons. 2 Discipleship The end of the year is here! Christmas is upon us and we celebrate the birth of our Savior. Shortly after that we have a time to celebrate the coming of the New Year. Remember last New Year? Remember that resolution you made? Did you make it? Let s talk about that. This past year I ve encouraged you to lay aside traditional ideas concerning New Year s resolutions and to make a commitment to grow in your faith with Christ. We acknowledge that we are Ilawed and will fail, but making a commitment means we don t give up we get up. We keep trying and keep moving forward. Maybe you made a commitment, but you treated it like a resolution. When you failed, you gave up and moved on to what was easy. But being a disciple of Christ is never easy. It requires us to go against the world and often against people we love. It requires us to give more authority to God s will for our lives than anything in this world. It requires us to count the cost and do what is holy. It s not easy, but it is a part of our journey as Christians. The commitment you make the commitment you already made when you gave your life to Christ is to continue moving forward in holiness. Maybe you re not where you wanted to be by now, but have you moved forward or backward? There is no standing still. If you have moved backward, the Iirst thing I encourage you to do is recognize and admit that you have moved backward. Renew your commitment to grow in holiness and surround yourself with people to help you to get there. Find the habits or other things that keep you from moving forward and make a plan to remove or change them. Start now, BEFORE January Iirst, so that it will not feel like another empty resolution. By Keven Newsome If you have moved forward, take a moment to praise God for your progress. You may not be where you want to be, but you re not where you were and that s worth celebrating. Thank God for the iniluences around you that helped you get here in your faith. Find ways to pay it forward by helping others to grow in holiness. Set a new goal for your faith and set it now. The righteous thrive like a palm tree and grow like a cedar tree in Lebanon. Planted in the house of the Lord, they thrive in the courts of God. They will bear fruit in old age, healthy and green, to declare: The Lord is just; he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him. Psalm 92:13-15 Keep growing, keep moving forward, and make daily commitments to be better stewards of your faith than you were the day before. Have a blessed and happy Christmas! For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with goodness, goodness with knowledge, knowledge with self-control, selfcontrol with endurance, endurance with godliness, godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being useless or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 1:5-8 (CSB)
3 Mission Emphasis: LoDe Moon How much do you really know about the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering s namesake? Lottie Moon spoke six languages and could read a seventh (Hebrew). She was born to afiluent parents and was the Iirst woman to receive a Masters Degree from a southern school in the US. By Buster Morris Prime Timers Ministry Wow, what a great Thanksgiving celebration last month. That was the largest group I can remember and the bounty of food was amazing. I want to give our kitchen helpers special thanks. This group of people is some of our most faithful servants, our years are catching up with us a little; it would be great to have a few younger folks joining this group. We enjoyed our visit to Bear Creek N.C. last month just a neat place to go to get the Christmas season off to a great start. We are looking forwarded to our Christmas trip to Brookgreen Garden s light show in just a couple of days, all reports are that it is beautiful. Don t forget to put the Christmas Fellowship on your calendar. (December 20) Wishing all our folks a very blessed Christmas season. December Prime Timer Events Tuesday, December 4 - Senior Breakfast at 8:00 AM Friday and Saturday December 7 and 8 - Brookgreen Garden Christmas Trip Thursday, December 13 - Karesh Wing Ministry 2:30 PM Thursday, December 20 - Christmas Fellowship 6:00 PM Thursday, December 27 - Springdale Ministry 2:30 PM She was engaged at one point, but she broke off her engagement when her Iiancé embraced liberal views of Scripture. She wrote, God had Pirst claim on my life, and since the two conplicted, there could be no question about the result. She would remain single for the rest of her life. She waged a spirited campaign to set aside the week before Christmas as a time for an international missions offering. The Iirst offering in 1888 raised over $3,000 - enough to send three new missionaries to China. Though she was initially given the job of school teacher, she advocated for the role of women in front-line evangelism. She was passionate about the role of women in missions and the need for countless more missionaries in China. She was also passionate about the care of the missionaries and crusaded for the Mission Board to allow a furlough for missionaries to return to the US for a visit every ten years. She was Iinally sent home to recuperate after years of ministry in famine and violence-plagued China but died on Christmas Eve while her ship was anchored in Japan. 3
4 Children s Ministry The following are some of the children s ministries activities centering around the Christmas season. While designed to be fun and enjoyable, their purpose is to help the children focus on the true meaning of Christmas. Christmas Around the World On Wednesday, December 5 from 6:30 until 7:30, our K5 through 5th grade children will experience some of the Christian Christmas customs of children around the world. They will act out some of the customs as well as eating some of the foods that are eaten in various parts of the world to celebrate the birth of Christ. Our focus this year will be the Christmas customs of Latvia. Our preschoolers will participate in the parts that are age appropriate for them. Camp Winter Blast Jesus Birthday Party By Rhonda Adams On Sunday, December 23 during morning worship, all the children will celebrate Jesus birth with a birthday party. All the children will go to the new children s building for the reading of the birth of Christ. While there they will sing happy birthday to Jesus and have birthday cake. Then they will separate into their own age groups for more activities in their usual locations. Rice Bowls Missions Collection Rice Bowls Ministry started back in 1980 in Spartanburg, SC. The purpose of the ministry is to raise money to buy food for orphans in 55 faith-based homes in 8 countries. Our children s ministry was able to raise $600 this fall with the rice bowls. Some of our 3rd through 5th graders will be going to Camp Longridge to attend Camp Winter Blast December 7th, 8th, and 9th. We will be leaving from Malvern Hill that Friday at 4:00 and will be returning that Sunday during morning worship. During Winter Blast, the children will participate in cabin and team games, devotions, worship and chapel services, Christmas activities, friendly contests, and more. This is an excellent opportunity for our children who have never been to camp to get a taste of camp life. Baby Shower Celebrating Jesus On Wednesday December 12 from 6:30 until 7:30, our K5 through 5th grade children will participate in a baby shower. During that time, they will play baby shower games and eat baby shower foods. The focus will be the birth of Christ. Morning in Bethlehem On Sunday, December 16 during morning worship, our K-5 through 5th grade children will experience some of what it would have been like during Jesus times. They will dress in the types of clothing that the Jewish people of Jesus time would have worn. Then they sign the census under the careful eyes of several Roman soldiers. They will pay taxes to a tax collector. They will hear about what it would have been like to have lived in a Jewish home. Lastly they will eat some of the foods Jesus would have eaten. 4

6 GeneraHon180 Ministry Patience is not waiting Do want your teen to wait, or get stronger? Next time you have the opportunity to use either of these words, be sure you communicate exactly what you want to them to do. Because, if you say patience and mean wait, they will struggle to understand the full deiinition of patience that the Bible teaches because the Bible teaches that patience is more than waiting. Sure it came mean to remain while time passes, but it doesn t mean sit idly by. When the Bible says be patient, it means endure. For a long time I misunderstood what it meant to be patient. People would tell me I needed to be more patient and I would think, How long is that going to take? I was never happy hearing those words because I thought I lacked something, I thought I was missing something, and in a sense, I was. I was missing the full deiinition of patience. Consider this, what if we changed the signs at the doctor s ofiice from Patient Waiting Room to Endurance Room. Wouldn t that make more sense because the people in that room aren t just waiting, they are enduring. They re going through something and if they prevail they ll be stronger. Many times in the New Testament you see the word patience and in most cases it is the Greek word hupomoné (hoop-om-on-ay), which means remain under or endure. It means stay where you are and take it. It means, meet the challenge and get stronger. Consider the following uses of hupomoné in the Bible. Luke 8:15 says, As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience. Here Jesus is explaining The Parable of the Sower. He begins in v.11 saying that the seed is the word of God. He goes on to explain how the seed fell on different types of ground; speciiically the wayside, rock, thorns, and on good ground. The Iirst three didn't yield good fruit, but the latter bear s fruit with hupomoné (patience). By Adam Whiteside James 1:2-4 says, Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. How do you test something? You put under stress in order to determine the quality it possesses. And while it goes through the testing, if it remains hupomoné, it gets stronger. Hebrews 12:1 says Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us. How do you run your race? You hupomoné! How do you endure? You spend time preparing for the race. You see, enduring isn t just a thing you do when you run, it s how you prepare to run. You go through something in the gym to get stronger so that when it s time to race, you re ready. Patience is going through the pruning. John 15:2 doesn t mention patience but the biblical meaning of patience is illustrated. John 15:2 says Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away, and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. So you produce fruit, but when the time comes you re pruned back. You can't just keep growing; you can't make fruit all the time. You have to rest, you have to regrow, and you have to endure. You must allow God to cut you back, and then regrow under his care and control. God shapes you to be more productive, you must endure to grow. This is how God prepares you for what is to come. When he prunes and you endure, he s telling you that you need more than you have right now. The next season may be harder than the last, and you need to be able to handle more. Having patience isn't waiting on something to happen. Patience is the time spent building your Christian faith between the times that God tells you to run and grow. The next time you want your teen to wait, tell them to wait. But the next time you want them to have patience (to endure), explain to them exactly what you mean by that.
