2 NOVEMBER 25, 2018 Spiritual Reflection Discovery and Growth vs. Independence & Control I always find this feast of Christ the King a challenge for us Americans. Years ago those who established this Republic of the United States of America (they were not necessarily our ancestors because many folks like me are descendants of immigrants) told the King of England in word and action of what their thoughts were of having a king. Besides rejecting the reality in the Constitution that we now have by not having a king, some early settlers threw the King s tea into the bay in New England. So how does the Church celebrate Christ as King? Think about it. What did Moses do as the People of Israel were roaming in the desert and they approached him to say maybe we should go back to Egypt and the Pharaoh s rule? Looking into John s Gospel as he places Jesus in the court of Pilate, what do we come to learn about rulers and kingship even though the Romans did not govern with a king but a demigod, a dictator? We know from Church history that kings, queens, princes and princesses are not necessarily evil because they are royalty but have been declared saints in the Church. Just recently, we celebrate the feast of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, royalty and saint. Jesus trial before Pilate was one whereby Jesus public statements were taken by religious leaders to the civil authorities and presented as a threat to the civil authorities position to establish policies and to administer those policies throughout the Roman Empire. A religious issue was made into a civil issue. In Jesus dialogue with Pilate, Jesus states he is not about insurrection and rebellion against the civil authorities. Actually, Jesus comes across as a wise-guy with the answers that John has him making. When asked if he is a king, Jesus response seems curt and disrespectful. Notice that John does not have Pilate reacting to Jesus response as we might see a principal in a school reacting to a child who may respond to a principal s question in a similar manner as Jesus. Pilate s response to Jesus is one of further discovery of this person, Jesus. Pilate engages Jesus until the issue of truth arises and Pilate ends the discussion by responding, What is truth? However, that is the realm of which Jesus reigns, TRUTH, what is this mystery of life all about. Life, Jesus, God is about discovery not individual freedom and control. The Feast of Christ the King has Franciscan roots. Read Colossians 1: The first flesh-andblood model of us (flesh-and-blood humans) is Jesus. So our lives as humans is discovering Jesus and thus God. The Church is about relationships and discovery. So as the Bishop has linked us with others on the JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY with others, let the gatherings of folks in the Group known as 113 and the ministries that we do help us to discover together and not seek to control nor in fear to protect. We are called to discover anew the centrality of the Eucharist and to live out the image and likeness of God as Paul tells the Colossians. Fr. Rich, a Capuchin Franciscan Nov. 25 Holy Name Meeting, after 9:30 a.m. Mass, Lower Room Nov. 26 Liturgy Committee Meeting, 7:15 p.m., Lower Room Nov. 28 Clergy Team Meeting, 1:00 p.m., Parish House Nov. 29 Christ Life Planning Meeting, 6:30 p.m., Lower Room Dec. 2 Advent Season Begins This weekend we are happy to welcome in Baptism Caroline Elaine Hill as a new daughter of God. We congratulate her parents Michael Hill and Jennifer Wolford Hill and pray that they may be the best of teacher of their daughter in the ways of Faith. UNIFIED BULLETIN Next weekend, with the beginning of Advent, we will be inaugurating a Unified Bulletin in our Grouping of Parishes. The new bulletin will have a new look and will have the information on all three parishes in one place. It will take a little longer to assemble the bulletin, so if you would like some announcement to be included in the bulletin it needs to be submitted to the Parish Office by Monday morning.

Dithridge Street, Pittsburgh, PA Monday, December 3, 2018 Saint Thomas à Becket Church, 139 Gill Hall Road, Jefferson Hills, PA Tuesday, December 4, 2018 Our Lady of Fatima Church, 2270 Brodhead Road, Aliquippa, PA Thursday, December 6, 2018 Saint Ferdinand Church, 2535 Rochester Road, Cranberry Township, PA Child sexual abuse by clergy has caused great suffering in the lives of survivors of abuse and concern among the faithful, Bishop Zubik said. These listening sessions are intended to be another way that we can support their continued healing. 12 HOURS OF GIVEMAS The Extra Mile Education Foundation is looking to engage 1,200 donors in twelve hours on 12/12. Go the extra mile this holiday season by supporting Catholic education for urban students. Visit extramilefdn.org or find Extra Mile on Facebook for more information and ways to get involved My Kingdom Does Not Belong to This World As the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Christ the King this weekend, our hearts are fixed on heaven, from where our God reigns. For our King, born in the stable in Bethlehem, son of Mary and Joseph the carpenter, had no political power in the world. He did not command military troops nor consult with court official. Instead, he came as one like us that he might show us the way to love and reign in our hearts as he reigns in heaven. Our benevolent Lord and King, Jesus, has chosen to dwell with us and has promised to prepare a place for us to dwell with him in heaven. So, we must ask ourselves, what kingdom are we choosing to live for? Are we seeking to build up a kingdom for ourselves in this life that is bound to pass away? Or will we work hard now to store up for ourselves treasure in heaven and come to share in the glory of the kingdom to come. On Mission for The Church Alive! seeks to strengthen the Church and increase the opportunities for us and others to grow closer to God and share in the life of his kingdom here and now. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.
