2018 Fall Issue MEMBERSHIP IN LWML Greetings from the LWML MN North District Board of Directors! I pray that all of you have had a chance to celebrate LWML Sunday this October. It is fitting to praise our Lord for all that He has accomplished through our organization. I know that many of you are moving into the zone fall gatherings. LWML member or not, you are always welcome to attend any of these events. The dates and times are posted on our website, lwmlmnn.org. Since I know that a lot of women are not familiar with the LWML Handbook, I would like to go back to some of the basics that can be found there. I will be sharing this information with you in my future articles as well. MEMBERSHIP Membership is available to any woman who is a communicant member of a congregation in The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Application, in accordance with the district bylaws for both individual and society membership, is made to the LWML district in which the person or society is located. (Our district is the Minnesota North District. Contact person would be the sitting district president) SOCIETY Women who are members of a society affiliated with the Lutheran Women s Missionary League are members of the LWML. Members of a society may hold elective office and are entitled to full voting privileges at the zone and district levels in accordance with the bylaws of the subordinate organization. INDIVIDUAL Women in a congregation, with or without a society, who wish to support the mission and ministry of the LWML, but cannot, for a variety of reasons, attend society meetings, may become individual members. Individual Membership Guidelines are available as a free download at LWML district presidents may be contacted for more information. Individual members have the same rights and privileges as members of societies, may serve on committees, and hold elective office at the zone, district, and LWML levels. If you are reading this article and would like to know more about starting a group or becoming an individual member, I am your contact person. I will help you out in any way I can. Every person on the Board of Directors is knowledgeable about where to get information for joining this wonderful organization in sharing the gospel message with those who do not know the Savior. LOOKING FORWARD The Assembly of Leaders Workshop, meeting under the theme Follow the Leader, will be held November 7-10 in St. Louis. Following the training of four people from our district, Leadership workshops will be held in 2019 throughout the MN North District. Plan now to attend. 3 Minnesota Northern Light Page LWML RETREAT Preparing for Life s Losses The annual LWML Retreat was held August 10-12, 2018 at Lutheran Island Camp. There were 54 women in attendance, 17 of which were firsttime attenders. The theme of this year s retreat was Good Grief based on Job 1:21b. Rev. Matthew Vrudny, Park Region Pastoral Counselor, led a two-part Bible study dealing with promises from the Bible, for Hope and Courage, and ways to show Christian sympathy. Chaplain Steve Breitbarth was the keynote speaker, addressing the many sources of grief, different ways individuals deal with grief, and how to best support others who are grieving. Participants at the retreat were also able to enjoy pontoon rides, tours of Christ Serve Ranch, yoga, meditative doodling, campfire singing, and fellowship with other LWML member. SEE WHAT YOU ARE MISSING? The 2019 LWML Retreat will be the weekend of August 9-11, Please save the date come and enjoy Christian fellowship with your brothers and sisters in Christ!
Minnesota Northern Light Page 4 CHRISTIAN LIFE Corles Rainer, Chairman christianlife@lwmlmnn.org Rev. Matthew Vrudny, Pastoral Counselor Karena Lapolice Doris Schroeder Kathy Steinmetz Ruth Thompson Your help is requested! by Corles Rainer Have you been inspired by something you heard or experienced at a rally or workshop? These events are helpful in providing us with encouragement and education as we discover the part we play as a member of God s Kingdom here on earth. At the rallies and workshops, we are able to connect with fellow LWML members, participate in shaping our zone and regional activities, and learn how we can help spread the Good News of Jesus Christ, our Savior. Speakers at these events help educate, equip and encourage us. The Christian Life Committee is in the process of updating the Speakers List, which is used to find speakers for rallies and workshops. The existing speakers are being contacted to update their contact information and confirm their wish to continue to be on the list. We are also updating the topics they are able and willing to speak about. New speakers are also being added to the list. Here is where you come in. If you have information about a speaker or speakers that you think would be good to add to the list, let us know. It would be helpful if you first confirm with them that they are willing to be added to the list. Then, provide us with the name and a way to contact them; we ll be glad to follow up. Suggestions can be sent to christianlife@lwmlmnn.org. Additional information for your society or zone meetings can be found at www. lwml.org/program-helps. Here you will find free, downloadable helps such as: Devotions (both personal and group), Bible Studies Sketches, Crafts, Litanies, Responsive Readings and Short Programs If you need help finding a resource, feel free to contact me Corles Rainer, Christian Life Chairman, at christianlife@lwmlmnn.org or LEADER DEVELOPMENT Kathy Brandt, Chairman leaderdevelopment@lwmlmnn.org Rev. Matthew Vrudny, Pastoral Counselor Lori Salvhus Marcia Wittenburg Accepting Leadership by Kathy Brandt In November, I will be attending Leadership training at the 2018 Assembly of Leaders in St. Louis, MO. This will be an intensive 3-day training session. The anticipated outcome of this training will be to equip women to share the love of Jesus and His message of salvation confidently in all that they do and then share this with the women of their district. We are challenged in Philippians 4:9: What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, do; and the God of peace will be with you. What a wonderful challenge to address! Most people are reluctant to accept positions of leadership, usually because they believe it will be a burden and time-consuming. It doesn t have to be that way. Being in a position of leadership can be fun, rewarding and a wonderful learning experience. Leaders seek out individuals to assist them with tasks put before them, thereby reducing a large task into several smaller tasks that are easily managed. The outcome not only produces the desired project but also the coming together of many different people for additional fun and fellowship. I will be charged with developing a program for our district to train and equip women for this important leadership need. My questions to you as women of our district are this: What area would you want to be trained in? What platform would you like to have for this? What areas do you see as needing special attention? Once again, dividing up the task before us makes it more manageable. Please give prayerful consideration to the answers to these questions. I ll be waiting to hear from you!
Minnesota Northern Light Page 5 HUMAN CARE Glenice Hall, Chairman humancare@lwmlmnn.org Rev. Matthew Vrudny, Pastoral Counselor Sheri Adkins Patty Wiedewitsch Jean Teste Ideas for Mission Service... by Glenice Hall As the new Human Care Chairman, I have been reading through material that was passed on to me. Fortunately, one of the resources I received is...with Care and Compassion. It was developed in 2003 and the information is still relevant today. I am going to share some of the information I have found written by Nancy Fischer. The purpose of the Human Care Committee is to sensitize women toward those who are hurting or in need and to enable them to compassionately reach out with knowledgeable Biblical, hands-on caring and comfort. Let s reflect on the scriptural meaning of HUMAN CARE. H Hands She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy (Proverbs 31:20). A woman often extends her arms and hands to those in need, whether it be the extending of a reassuring hug to a hurting child or friend in need. U Useful He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need (Ephesians 4:28). Do we steal from God by not wisely using the time he gives us? Perhaps we could use more of our time doing something for someone in need. M Make Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you (1 Thessalonians 4:11). Open your heart and mind; listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit. Keep your hands busy doing helpful things. Make a conscious effort to help others. A Able And the Lord s servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful (2 Timothy 2:24). God has given each of us special gifts with which we are able to do what he has called us to do. Let us use our special gifts to do His will. N Neglect So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, It would not be right of us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. (Acts 6:2). We must constantly seek God s will in our lives. We must not neglect His Word. We must reach out to others. C Care Be shepherds of God s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be, not greedy for money, but eager to serve (1 Peter 5:2). God places certain people and certain circumstances in our lives for us to care for. We must be willing to follow His calling. A Action In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead (James 2:17). How is my faith? Do others see God in me because of my actions? R Rescue Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked (Psalm 82:4). Look around. There are many people around us that are weak and in need. Not only do they have physical needs, but they may also lack knowledge of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. Put all your effort into rescuing them from the evil one. E Entertain(ed) Keep on loving each other as brothers. Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering (Hebrews 13:1-3). We can reach out to many different people. We don t even have to know their names. We just need to help (entertain) them, even those who are in prison. These are just a few of the many verses in Scripture where God speaks to us regarding our service to others. As you search the Scriptures, you may find even more, but think on these as you continue to serve Him through your acts of Human Care.
Minnesota Northern Light Page 6 MISSION GRANTS Susan Zeige, Chairman missiongrants@lwmlmnn.org Rev. Bruce Timm, Pastoral Counselor Sandra Bakeberg, Carol Ann Sander Joan Johnson Carol Westendorf Mites Can Do Mitey Things by Susan Zeige There s a crispness in the air, furnaces are being used in cool mornings, and once again we find ourselves rejoicing in another season, colored with the beauty of turning leaves that God has blessed us with in our area. It is also a time for rallies and planning for elections of new officers for our societies. This is also a time to realize that our mites not only go to support the mission grants of the Minnesota North LWML District, but also the national grants as well. Are you aware that your computer can take you to the LWML site (lwml.org), and under Mission Grants you can view a video each month that highlights a specific grant for the biennial? I would like to focus on the LWML grant Lutheran Children s Books for Families Worldwide. This grant has the focus of providing Lutheran missionaries and new Christian families with free colorfully illustrated books A Child s Garden of Bible Stories and Bible Stories in Pictures that are translated in languages that families can understand to help share the love of Jesus with their children. Missionaries and church leaders have shared their deep need for this resource. The Lutheran Heritage Foundation has translated, published, and distributed these resources for over 25 years in over 90 languages. To date, $40,000 has been given to support this worthwhile project, and $60,000 remains to be funded. Isn t it exciting to see what our mites can do in spreading the Gospel to others! Mission Grants Committee Report A total amount of $10,000 in mites for LWML MN North grants was raised this past quarter. The Mission Grant Committee recommended and the BOD approved the payment of grant allocations as follows: $2,800 for Scholarships for Men Preparing for Ordination; $5,000 for Scholarships for Full-Time Church Work Student; $3,000 for Trinity HOPE Haitian Feeding Program. The chart below details the current balance remaining for the biennium. 7 Minnesota Northern Light Page 7 PUBLIC RELATIONS Ruby Prochnow, Chairman publicrelations@lwmlmnn.org Rev. Donald Klatt, Pastoral Counselor Catherine Hollermann Barbara Rolf Life The Creator Of Life by Ruby Prochnow, Public Relations Chairman & Rev. Matthew Vrudny, Pastoral Counselor Scripture has much to say in regards to Life Issues conception, sustained life, God s plan for our lives, and the ending of our lives. We, as Christians believe: A) Life begins at conception. (Psalm 139: 13-16). B) David heralds how God sustains his life (Psalm 12: 7 & Psalm 16:1). C) Jeremiah assures us of what God has to do with our lives. God has a Plan for each of our lives. (Jeremiah 29: 11 & 12). We see our lives through a small window of our life s journey. God sees the entire picture of our life which He has created, sustains, and ends. Because of sin coming into our world, we hear on the news of a young pregnant mother with 2 small children in Colorado murdered, a man in Eden Prairie, MN who assisted the suicide of his wife, (She left a suicidal note stating, I just can t endure the pain anymore. ), and most recently the tragic death of a young woman in Iowa that was stalked and murdered. As the LWML, we support the Biblical view of the sanctity of human life with the goal that each person be born, live, and die under God s grace with faith in Christ Jesus the Savior. We also support the mission of Lutherans for Life with its many useful resources on life issues. (lutheransforlife.org). The LWML encourages each individual woman to show her concern for every person, from young to old, so that every soul might be touched by the Gospel, especially those who are in danger of an untimely death when life issues become politicized and are separated from the influence of the Lord s Church. As a citizen and a Christian, you can feel free to contact your national and state representatives to encourage them to support bills that preserve life from conception, through troubles, and to natural death. (You may get in touch with the LIFE TEAM at Zion, Alexandria if you want contact information for your representatives). ARCHIVIST-HISTORIAN JoNette Brogaard historian@lwmlmnn.org LWML History by JoNette Brogaard Interested in history of the LWML? There are books that have been written concerning LWML on the national level that you may want to read. Those we have in our archives: Women On A Mission (The role of women in the church from Bible times up to and including a history of the LWML during its first twenty-five years) by Ruth Fritz Meyer Wings (The 50th Anniversary history of the LWML of the LCMS) by Marlys Taege God Gave the Increase (Encouraging stories of God at work through LWML mites in Europe, Asia, and Africa) by Marlys Taege Moberg, Lauren Beale, Janice Kerper Brauer) Wherever God Sends Us (Inspiring stories of LWML mites in the Americas), edited by Marlys Taege Moberg Think about this we re making history right now supporting mission grants with our mites and making a difference here and around the world. May God continue to bless our efforts! SCHOLARSHIPS Valerie Johnson, Chairman scholarships@lwmlmnn.org Elizabeth McTighe, Chairman Rev. I attend Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne in the Master of Arts in Deaconess Studies. I am currently in my 2nd year of studies. My field work church is New Life Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne. New Life is in a low-income neighborhood and also has a large Burmese refugee population. While working as a field worker, I have had the opportunity to participate in a variety of events. Once a month I go with a member of the congregation to a women s shelter in the neighborhood and give a Bible study. We also coordinate rides to church for those who want to attend services. I have had the opportunity to work with the non-profit connected to the church L.A.M.B., also known as Lutheran Agency for Mission to the Burmese. I have assisted them in using technology to reach those who may have been unreachable before. Along with that, I have filmed a Lenten devotion series for them dealing with a number of issues such as death and financial issues. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. (Matthew 28:18-20)
Minnesota Northern Light Page 9 YOUNG WOMEN Beth Dinger, Chairman youngwomen@lwmlmnn.org Rev. Matthew Vrudny, Pastoral Counselor Karena Lapolice Karen Gorentz Susan Zeige (BOD liaison) This One is For My Mom by Beth Dinger Happy Fall to you readers out there! Lately I ve been seeing advertisements for farmers and vendors selling items for fall decorating: pumpkins, corn stalks, gourds, hay bales, and other common fall decorations. My mom is in her element! She loves to decorate for each and every holiday and season. I love going home for Christmas to enjoy the completely transformed old farm house with each room decorated with my mom s artistic touch. It is so peaceful, and perfectly mom. I cherish our Christmas Day visits home to celebrate, particularly since I do very little to decorate for the holidays. We get a tree, the kids hang stockings, and I usually buy a wreath from one of the many groups selling them, but that is about the extent of my decorating. Although I love my Mom s beautifully decorated home, I am overwhelmed by adding another task of that magnitude to my already over-packed schedule. That is one area that I have decided to let go. However, it makes me appreciate my mom s decorating even more. My mom puts her decorating talents to use at church, as well. She has given of her time and talents since I was young, to help decorate the church, change out decorations, often with items from her own personal collection, and spending hours so that others can enjoy the fruits of her labor. She was in charge of decorating the church and reception hall for my December wedding 18 years ago, and her decorations were amazing, perfect for our winter wedding. Why, you might ask, do I tell you this? What does it have to do with the LWML? To tell you the truth, it doesn t. I ve written articles mentioning my Grandma, who was a large influence in my young Lutheran life. I connect her with LWML, although her participation was limited to rallies and District Conventions when they were near home. My mom would dutifully drive Grandma around to the rallies and conventions, but I don t know that she has attended any LWML functions since before Grandma passed away. My mom doesn t enjoy meetings, and doesn t seek out, or particularly enjoy, positions of leadership. However, she is active in her local Circle, where she enjoys participating in Bible study and fellowship every month, and has since I was a young child. She prefers to serve in her church, where she quietly serves in the ways that most Lutheran women do: providing food for funerals, serving on altar cloth or communion committees, and helping with various church dinners as they come along.there are Lutheran women just like my mom all over in our district, state, and across the United States. What a blessing they are! What a blessing you are! And so, although I enjoy, and actually cherish, my LWML involvement and leadership role, I am also so thankful for the other women in the pew, like my mom, who selflessly serve in so many ways. God calls us all to serve Him in different ways and in different vocations. Praise God that by His grace, through no works of our own, we are saved. We serve Him with the gifts and avenues He has set before us. What a blessing my mom has been, raising my three siblings and myself in a Christian home, and now caring for my aging Grandpa. Be a blessing wherever you are and serve the Lord with gladness! For those of you who are interested in learning more about the LWML, and feel that the time is right to get involved, applications to serve as a YWR for our district next June at the LWML Convention in Mobile, Alabama, are now available in 2018 Fall Packets, and online at our LWML District website. Applications are due December 1st. I can t wait to learn more about other young women in the MN North District as I read your applications with the YW Committee, and help select the next two YWRs to the LWML Convention. If you have any questions about the application process, or the Convention itself, please do not hesitate to contact me! Mobile, Alabama, HERE WE COME!
