4 Task 3: Read each extract/paragraph/passage and choose the best answer for each question. The amazing thing about is that it provides a detailed insight into English society exactly as it was in It tells us about real people: their names, where they lived, who they worked for, their occupations and their lifestyles. The book tells the story of a very rural country with only a few scattered towns and lots of very empty countryside. About two million people in total lived in the country with most of them located in the south and east (which is still the same today). 1. The extract above tells that A. Domesday Book tells about people and their occupations B. Domesday Book tells about people in the rural countries C. Domesday Book tells about the names of real people D. Domesday Book tells about the people and the land Eleventh century England had well-established historical roots with a long legacy of culture stretching back over the thousand years to the Roman occupation. Indeed, the island nation was relatively richer than the continent from which William had come. England s wealth at that time was built on wool. The English exported wool to the continent in very large amounts. This was one of the reasons William came to England in the first place. He wanted to own the wealth of England for himself and his followers. is the record of how the victorious Normans took over the assets of Saxons whose country they conquered. 2. The extract above tells about A. The history of the Domesday Book B. The reason William came to England C. The historical roots of the Roman occupation D. Owning of the wealth for himself and the followers We know from historical records that William the Conqueror spent the winter of 1085 in Gloucester. From this important trading centre on the River Severn in the southwest of England, William decided to find out everything he could about his new Kingdom. William summoned his council and told them of his plan to conduct the most thorough and detailed survey ever undertaken. William wanted to know everything. He wanted to know precisely who owned each parcel of land. He wanted to know what livestock they owned. He wanted to know the nature of their employment. Most importantly for William, he wanted to know what taxes he could make his people pay to him. 3. The extract above tells that A. William wanted to be humble with people of the kingdom B. William wanted to take charge of the new kingdom C. William wanted to give importance to the people in his kingdom D. William wanted to set up trade in his new kingdom.

5 Amazingly, however, William s team of surveyors completed the 900-page national record within a year. This stands as perhaps the most efficient national survey ever conducted in the history of the world! Although William s focus was on maximizing his tax revenues, survives as one of the most thorough and accurate surveys of a land and its people ever made. Today the book provides scholars with a meticulous, eyewitness account of every meadow, orchard, woodland, pasture, fishpond and village in England along with fascinating details of the individuals who ploughed, fished, harvested and travelled the land. 4. The extract above tells that A. The book has created a great history worldwide B. William s focus was on maximizing the tax revenues C. William s team completed the survey within a year D. The book has fascinating details of who lived in the land Anyone interested in seeing this remarkable book for themselves can find The Domesday Book show at the Public Records Office in Chancery Lane, London. Every day, visitors from all over the world come to stand in awe and wonder before this unique and wonderful record. The legacy of shows up in every national census and taxgathering exercise conducted in the world right now. 5. The extract above concludes that A. The history of the book B. The book can be used C. The book is on display D. The book is a bestseller

6 Answers Issue: VIN DIESEL Task 1: 1. Because no other country has such a detailed, comprehensive and wide-ranging record of ordinary people s lives from a thousand years ago. 2. Because it was locked away in a chest in Winchester and no one saw its significance. 3. The survey was conducted because William wanted to know everything about his new kingdom. He wanted to know how the people lived the taxes he needed to collect. 4. Abraham Farley 5. Public Records office, Chancery Lane. 6. It was a 900 page record completed within a year and documented details of the every person and the land. 7. Because it is a reference for every national census and tax-gathering exercise conducted in the world today. Task 2: 1. B 2. A 3. D 4. B 5. C 6. C 7. D 8. B 9. A 10. D Task 3: 1. D 2. B 3. B 4. A 5.
