A Healing Community strives to restore relationships between returning citizens and their families, communities, and the larger society. At the center of a Healing Community are Stations of Hope. Stations of Hope are churches that offer refuges of healing and centers of teaching - a renewed vision for returning citizens, their families and communities. P. 9

10 Learning daily about how to establish a strong kingdom witness locally, nationally and globally in such a way that brings forth change and inclusive space for all persons. (YOUTH WILL REMAIN IN THIS CLASS MONDAY THRU THURSDAY) Tuesday Thursday Classes ONLY SELECT ONE (1) (Select one class to attend Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday from 9:00 10:45 AM. **All-Week Messengers: You must attend same class each day for certificate.**) 1. LeaderFOCUS What s your mission? What s your goal? How will you reach your goal? How will you know your mission is accomplished? Where s God in the life and work of the leader? This class will assist church leaders in discovering and/or refreshing their skills as they explore God s heartbeat for leadership success. 2. Christian Formation for Christian Educators How are you continuously being formed, informed, and transformed by God? Christian formation is a lifelong journey of being shaped by God. Participants in this class will examine their personal transformative journey; gain encouragement for lifelong formation; and, explore sources and resources for living a growing relationship with God, P. 10 self, others and the world. 3. Can I Get A Witness? Can I Get A Witness! Witnessing should be a way of life for every Christian. Is this our missional mandate? What does this way of life look like? How can I share God s love with people I don t know? A church committed to reaching out to its community must be sensitive to the way people live and adjust its outreach to meet them where they are. It must not assume that what has worked in the past will work today. Participants in this class will become equipped with creative ways of sharing God s love through reaching OUT and witnessing. 4. Intergenerational Christian Formation in the 21st Century Church In most churches, teaching and formation are compartmentalized according to age groups. What would spiritual growth and participation in the life of the church look like if generations came together to learn, love, live, and go into all the world? This class will explore the biblical tradition of teaching and learning and, its intergenerational impact to become the church God has called us to be. 5. It Takes A Woman An effective 21st Century women s ministry should not separate women from the rest of the church. The aim is not just for the good of women but for the good of the entire church. Women s ministry should be as unique and dynamic as the intergenerational women it serves. As women encourage each other through God s Word, they become increasingly Christ-centered prayerful connectors with others family members, those needing physical or spiritual help, children, church leaders, etc. This class will offer insights for establishing a relevant 21st Century women s ministry, i.e.: social injustice,

11 engaging millennials, investing in youth, programs geared toward rebuilding the self-worth of women and, the development of dynamic sister to sister relationships. 6. Helping Your Church (or Ministry) Deal with CHANGE not Surprises The problem in many churches isn't that people can't handle change. It's that people don't like being surprised by changes. How can change be embraced NOT complained about? This class will offer strategies for reducing surprises and getting people on board to embrace change in a painless manner. 7. CLERGY: Challenges Facing the 21st Century Church There are many challenges facing the church in the 21st Century. Challenges, however, are overcome with a multitude of opportunities available for the church and those who lead it. Historically, the church has thrived when tested rather than when its comfortable. 8. Financial Empowerment in the African American Church This class will help church leaders and members adopt Christian Stewardship and Debt Management Principles. In the 21st Century financial literacy is as crucial to our economic survival as academic literacy. We must prepare for increasing responsibility for making financial decisions including support the church and other organizations while planning for retirement. Fewer Americans will receive an employer-defined pension as compared to ten or twenty years ago. Today, a defined contribution plan places the financial risk on the employee who is often ill-prepared to make decisions that will benefit their long-term financial goals. 9. Understanding Hospice Care This session will provide an understanding of the Hospice benefit, and how these services provide a deeper end-of-life experience for all involved. When a person receives a prognosis of 6-months or less life expectancy, that individual becomes eligible for Hospice services. During this session, we will journey through the myths of Hospice and learn the facts of this necessary healthcare benefit. You will learn about Peaceful Passing, Hospice and Faith Based Initiatives and exactly how the admission process takes place. 10. Being Seen & Heard: How the Millennial Generation Destroys Barriers Surrounding the Church and Community Individuals will learn that the millennial generation (ages 22-37) are not concerned with tradition or carrying on a business as usual mentality but instead are admit about being the hands and feet of Christ in the community. Each person will take a deeper look at how to engage millennials but also how the church needs to evolve in order for the next generation to thrive in Christ. 11. Tough Issues? Needed Discussions Is the Black Church losing her voice? Her witness? Sexual misconduct seems to be the lead story in most, if not all of media outlets today. How does the church respond? How should the church respond? Is it the church s obligation or Christian responsibility to respond? What are the consequences of responding or not responding? Are background checks are possible response? This class will explore these tough questions and others. 12. Return of the Men (FOR MEN ONLY) Where are the men? Do you want to increase the presence and participation of Black men in the church? Why aren t more men attending church today? Are millennials welcome (without suits)? How does the church reach, nurture, and equip P. 11

12 men in the 21st Century church? These questions and more will be discussed and explored in this class. 13. Authentic 21st Century Worshipful Music Is God challenging the church to re-evaluate where it stands in all areas of worship? Is 21st Century worship re-centering on the awesomeness of God? Are we entertaining or worshiping God in truth and Spirit? Does worship today teach God's concern and welcome for all person? This will class explore worshipful music as deep enough to turn all generations to God; strong enough to stop selfishness; awe-full enough to shatter our limits of God; and complete enough to know God s got it all. 14. Building Blocks of Church Facility Management and Maintenance Stewardship and maintenance of the church facility and property is a must. Whether the operation and maintenance of equipment systems, interior and exterior maintenance or oversight of service contracts associated with the operation and maintenance of church properties, these services must be done. With the assistance of a competent veteran building specialist, this class will explore strategies for effective stewardship and management of church facilities. Trustees and those responsible for the day to day upkeep of your church building and property will find this class very helpful and rewarding. 15. Empowering Healthy Families Participants will receive details on our new BGCVA/Virginia Tech partnership for a new project called Empowering Healthy Families! This program will help families with young children keep their children healthy and reduce their risk of getting diabetes and other diseases. This class is a P. 12 preview of the nine week program that combines Healthy Children, Healthy Families (HCHF) and MoneySmart. We have a 5-year grant to work with 24 congregations. Churches and participants will receive a modest stipend for portions of the program. Health ministry leaders, members and those interested in starting a health ministry are encouraged to attend. 16. D.U.I. (Dancing Under the Influence) This class will explore the various aspects of dance ministry and how to be effective in your ministry with movement. Understanding what it means to worship in the dance and how that looks at your church. Being intentional about ministering to God's people (Who and what influences your dance?). Participants will gain a better understanding of praise and worship in the dance, have an opportunity to experience free worship movement and learn the different levels of dance and how that can be incorporated in their own ministries. 17. Enough Is Enough! (Youth Ages 7 17 ONLY) Youth will explore together the teachings of Jesus Christ and the constructs of Social Justice, all the while developing a deeper understanding of our Christian mandate regarding community involvement. Learning daily about how to establish a strong kingdom witness locally, nationally and globally in such a way that brings forth change and inclusive space for all persons.
