Do good. Stay in love with God John Wesley APRIL 2017 Mission with Seniors We re continuing to expand our mission with seniors, as we identify needs, and find ways to meet those needs. The first of March, the church s children went to the nursing home, where they filled the window boxes our youth had made. Carol Schlachter had arranged for the Master Gardeners to donate the plants and soil, and to have gardening gurus there to help the kids get it right. Turned out they had donated more soil and plants than needed, so the young missionaries filled all the window boxes! We learned there was a need for Mexican Train games at the nursing home, so Sheila Barnette donated her train set and Rose Schwartz agreed to set up and lead the games. By the time you read this, the train should have made its first trips around the table. When Tonya Dahmann reported the PEC had a bingo outfit it no longer needed, she wondered whether we could use it. Following the church rule of never turning anything down, we went looking for a need to fill with it, and found it at the Housing Authority, where the residents love the once-a-month bingo someone already was doing, and wished they could play more often. Marjorie Heard volunteered to be the bingo caller. We ll need to pass the hat to get some inexpensive prizes, but we re ready to let the games begin. Might we also use the bingo set to start daytime bingo here at the church? We might, indeed, if enough people say they re interested in playing. Treats for Troops Remember Treats for Troops? Packing goodie boxes for soldiers serving over there? Well, we re doing it again. Like we did last spring, we ll collect goodies all through April and have our children pack the boxes in June, to have them ready to mail by Flag Day June 14 to arrive in the Middle East by the 4th of July. Just a reminder to the folks dodging bullets over there that while we re enjoying barbecues and fireworks here, we have forgotten they re the ones who make it possible to enjoy the holiday in peace and safety.

2 As members of this congregation, we pledge to faithfully participate in its ministries by our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service and our witness. Our Prayers...Lord Hear our prayers: for those who are ill, grieving, or facing difficult times; for those persons in nursing homes, assisted living and homebound; for our military and civilian men and women serving in harm s way and their families; for our leaders, and children everywhere. Our Presence 1st Service Our Gifts 2nd Service SS March 5th March 12th March 19th March 26th Year to date as of April 1, 2017 Budget Requirements $76,375 Tithes Received $76,172 Susan & Kenneth Troppy Our New Members P.O. Box 127 Round Mountain, TX Kids Lunch Club The Kids Lunch Club is on again for this summer. Enough volunteer cooks stepped up to make 9 teams, which is the minimum needed to launch. We ll start the first Monday in June preparing free nutritious meals Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for any youngsters who come through the door, plus whoever brought them. The reason is that many children in town depend on the lunch program at school for much of their good food, but when school is out for the summer, so is lunch. That s where we come in. But the Kids Lunch Club isn t only a free meal for low-income youngsters, nor do we want it to be. We want a mix of children so nobody feels like they re accepting charity. That s why we re happy to also host the basketball players from the pavilion, the Vacation Bible School gang when they re here, and any other small persons who happen by the church at mealtime. They re not depriving a needy kid of his lunch they re enabling him to come eat without also having to swallow his pride. One thing we need is used children s books. In past years, we d developed a big lending library of books to keep our customers reading through the summer, and the books went over surprisingly well. With donated books, we could let a reader keep a book if they liked it. But at the end of last summer s program, we gave all our books away, not sure we d be back this year, but we are, and now we need to rebuild the library. If you can help, please do. Ages infant through high school.

3 Disaster Used Clothing Drive Our Disaster Used Clothing Drive is going into the last days, with pickup set for the first week in April. Lots of bags and boxes are coming in, but we still have room for lots more. We and our partner churches (4 others in Johnson City; 21 throughout the Hill Country) collect the clothing, then the Seventh-day Adventist Disaster Services truck comes around and picks it all up. In the Adventists warehouse south of Ft Worth, the clothes are sorted, sanitized, packaged and stored. When a disaster occurs in or near Texas, they fill their truck and have clean clothes waiting when the survivors wake up in the shelter in the morning. The trouble with most used clothing collections after disasters is their timing. The need for used clothing is only the first 24 to 48 hours after a disaster. If you wait til it happens, it ll take a week to get going, then a week to collect, then maybe a week to get it delivered. By that time, the need is past, and the loads of incoming used clothes are just so much debris to be hauled to the landfill. That s why we do ours now, before it s needed, so it ll be ready when the need hits. The folks you help with your donation, of course, don t know they re going to be hit by a tornado or flood or wildfire. When it happens, though, your gift will be there to help them get through the worst days of their lives. Misión de Candelilla The Fredericksburg outfit we go on medical missions to Mexico with, Misión de Candellilla, is getting more than the usual support from here this spring. Carol Schlachter went on one mission trip with them in March, and came back with a renewed appreciation for her life in Johnson City. A quick lesson in taking patients' vital signs, and she was off to greet the first of about 200 patients they d see in two days. In late April, Rose Schwartz, David Hamm and George Barnette will go on a different trip, but doing the same things with a different set of patients. On this trip, we usually wind up working the pharmacy, dispensing 75-85,000 pills in three days, plus other types of medications. No medical skills needed on these trips they already have doctors and nurses for that what they need are willing hands ready to help. On some of the trips, the purpose is construction, requiring different skills from a core group but again having lots to do for folks who don t have those skills yet. EASTER LILY ORDER Please indicate below the number of lilies you would like to order and how you would like to have your lily listed in the bulletin. I would like to order $10.00 each for a total of $ I have included $ Your Name PLEASE LIST MY LILY(IES) AS FOLLOWS: IN HONOR OF IN MEMORY OF

4 Treats for Troops This is our program to send "goodie boxes" to troops from Ft Hood who are stationed abroad as a reminder that their sacrifice is remembered and appreciated by the folks back home whose freedom they are protecting. We will mail the boxes on in June, to arrive in time for them to enjoy 4th of July. The post office will provide free boxes in three sizes, each of which mails for a flat rate ($6.80, 13.45, or 18.75), no matter what it weighs. They also provide mailing labels and customs forms (which are required by the host country). Then you fill the box with what you think would be useful, appreciated, and a reminder of home. And mail 'em. (We don't have the budget for mailing.) Or you can pick up a bag or box of something and we'll consolidate it with others, or just leave a check and we'll do the shopping. What to put in? This list is unofficial and no doubt incomplete, but it can start you thinking. If you come up with other ideas, please let us know and we'll pass them around to other folks. 5 A Note from your Wesley Nurse We started the Daniel Plan classes and our first class was on Faith. Here are words of encouragement from the Daniel Plan. We will have this class again so if your interested please call me at For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans 15:4 NIV Put Down the Chocolate and Pick Up Your Bible Are you down in the dumps? Need a mood elevator? Put down the piece of chocolate cake. Don t have a pity party. Pick up your Bible instead. You need a Word break. God gave us the Bible to encourage us. One way you can think of the Bible is as a mood elevator. The Bible says in Romans 15:4, For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope (NIV). Everything in Scripture is written for our encouragement. That s a big statement but it s true! Even the tough parts of God s Word are there to ultimately encourage our lives in the right direction. That s why we need to spend time alone with God every single day. Whether it s your daily devotional, your quiet time, or your personal inspiration time, you need to be getting alone with God, reading his Word, and talking to him. The Bible says in Psalm 119:114: You're my place of quiet retreat; I wait for your Word to renew me (MSG). If you re discouraged and have lost hope, I can tell you one thing about your life without ever meeting you: You re not spending time in God s Word. If you were, you wouldn t be discouraged. The more you read God s Word when you re down, the more he lifts you up. So the next time you feel discouraged, don t come home and turn on the television. Instead, open up your Bible and read it. Listen to Dr. Luke instead of Dr. Phil. God s Word has the power to change your life. It has God s power in it. Nothing else does. The Bible will give you the real stuff true encouragement. What are some of the things that you turn to when you feel discouraged? Do those things really offer you encouragement or give you hope? We can fit anything into our schedules if it s really important to us. Have you carved out a time in your day for quiet retreat so that God can renew you? 6 Thoughts from the Center Office Well, Easter is quickly upon us. As you get this newsletter, many will be busy working on or completing the preparations for Holy Week activities and Easter Sunday. Please plan to attend the Living Last Supper, Good Friday Service and Easter Services. This year we will also be showing the Passion of Christ in the activity center following Good Friday service. This movie is a little over 2 hours long. It originally came out in 2004 and was directed by Mel Gibson. While it is a graphic movie that represents the things our Savior endured, it is one I recommend for appropriate ages, it is rated R, for the graphic nature. Remember crucifixion is not a pleasant thing and Christ did that for us. But it is also part of the reason we can get to the glorious Easter Morning, the Resurrection! 1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. 2 And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. 3 They had been saying to one another, "Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?" 4 When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. 5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. 6 But he said to them, "Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. Mark 16:1-6 Let us proclaim the Good News, Christ is Risen! Praise God for all things as we celebrate the Risen Savior! As a reminder we will once again gather in fellowship, for our Easter Pot-Luck Brunch with children s Easter Egg Hunt. I look forward to seeing you all! Blessings, Pastor Lee Mel Gibson s The Passion of the Christ will be shown following the Good Friday service on April14th in the Activity Center. This is a graphic film depicting the events leading up to, and through the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. High school age and above are welcome! April 9th - Palm Sunday April 13th - Maundy Thursday Reenactment of the Lord s Supper with Communion served at 7:00 pm in the Activity Center. Childcare will be provided. April 14th - Good Friday Service at 7:30 pm in the Sanctuary - The Passion of the 8:30 pm Easter Schedule April 16th - 8:30 am Easter Sunday Early Service in the Sanctuary - 9:40 am Potluck Brunch with Easter Egg Hunt for children - 10:50 am Easter Sunday Late Service in the Sanctuary
