06/02/13 Equipping Month Mending the Saints Eph 4:11-13; Heb 12:1, Luke 17:14-19, Mat 4:17-22 Eph 4:13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ; Mending the Saints Inside focus. Discipleship with Healers.
Heb 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us... Active people/inactive Church The Basic Conflict
Just what sort of activity does God desire in a local church? Eph 4:11 And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, Fivefold Leadership Eph 4:12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up Threefold Church: the body of Christ,
Just what is God's goal here? Eph 4:13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ; 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the cunning of men, by their craftiness in deceitful wiles. This is the goal of our working on discipleship.
One Word: Equip Ephesians 4:12: to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ... καταρτίζω
One Word: Equip Katartizo: (used 13x in N.T.): to render fit, sound, complete; to mend (what has been broken or rent), to repair; to complete; to fit out, equip, put in order, arrange, adjust; to fit or frame for one s self, prepare; ethically: to strengthen, perfect, complete, make one what he ought to be. καταρτίζω
Luke 17:14 When he saw them he said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went they were cleansed. 15 Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; 16 and he fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks And he said to him, "Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well." Your faith includes your active obedience.
Quiet time: Choose God As you work on your discipleship, Empty bowl: Be still. YOU WILL Biblical Input become a better, happy, healthier person. Written Output: Spiritual Inventory. God's Goal: Equip (mend) the saints...
The Early Methodist Class Meeting: A Together spiritual discipline Class leader asks the same group each week: How is it with your soul? Sharing. Accountability. Encouragement. Assistance.
John Wesley's goal: Spread scriptural holiness across the land. Scriptural wholeness spread just as well. The Early Methodist Class Meeting: Results: behaviors changed, lives changed. Wesley began with the poorest of the poor their grandchildren were middle class. Comparative: from welfare to millionaire
The problem with focusing on problems...
Poor focus: focus on problems, suffering, confession, our sin - away goals require great energy, most of which is expended on anxiety. Holy is more than to run away from sin.
The Bicycle Principle
Rich focus: toward goals supply energy: focus on solutions, feeling better, visualizing God's future, go and show - and as we obey God's plan, we are cleansed, healed, made right, made righteous. We are mended.
Rich focus: toward goals supply energy: Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, generosity, trustworthiness, self-control. Galatians 5:22-23
Mat 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." 18 As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him.
Mat 4:21 And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him.
God desires for us to be wholly holy, whole. No longer broken! This sort of mending is no longer sufficient.
Quiet time: Choose God Empty bowl: Be still. Biblical Input Written Output: Spiritual Inventory. Turbocharging together: With another person. With the Holy Spirit. With a Role Model Discipleship Goal: Equip the saints... Mended to a holy wholeness.
One Minute for God Would a little activity benefit your spiritual life? How is it with your soul?
