1 Hixson Presbyterian Church Ridge Views Vol 47 Issue 8 August 2018 VBS 2018 We had a time traveling adventurer this year for VBS 2018! We learned all about Jesus from eternity past to eternity future! We were so lucky to have knowledgeable bible teachers and our very own in house scientist (Josh Hamblen) to take us on this adventure! Each day we had a different C word to remind us of where we traveled and what we learned about! They were Creation, Christophany, Cross, Clouds, and Crown! These words helped us travel through the Bible and remember that Jesus always has been, and always will be. Our theme verse was Revelation 1:8 which says I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. What a fun week filled with bible, science, crafts, games, snacks, drama, and praising our God in song! Thank you to everyone who helped support VBS this year!

2 Welcome Our New Staff Members Patrick Jones Director of Worship Patrick grew up nearby in Rome, Georgia. He earned a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Georgia and a Master of Music from the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. Patrick grew up in the church playing piano and guitar for Sunday morning preludes, special music, and youth worship and was heavily involved in choirs from a young age. Patrick joined the staff of HPC in July of Prior to joining HPC, Patrick served as Pianist, Choir Director, and Music Director at various churches in Georgia and Music Ministry Coordinator at Western Home Communities in Cedar Falls, Iowa. This fall, Patrick s wife Lynn is joining the faculty of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga as Assistant Professor of Piano and Keyboard Area Coordinator. Lynn and Patrick enjoy hiking, cooking, playing with their Labrador Retriever Moses, and enjoying the mountain views from their new home in Hixson. Nathan Grubbs Director of Youth & Families Nathan has been serving in ministry to students for 18 years in the Chattanooga area. He graduated from Covenant College in 2003 with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with concentrations in Youth Ministry, Sociology, and Missions. He married his wife, April in 2003 and they have three kids, Ellie 9, Caleb 7, and AnnaKate 3. He loves football, particularly the Tennessee Titans and the South Carolina Gamecocks.

3 Tracking the Trailmen of TN-1967 The Spring Yorktown Trip: After a long day of caravanning, Trail Life Troop TN arrived at Patriot s Point in Charleston, SC on Friday evening, June 1. We signed in and were escorted to our sleeping quarters eight rows of four bunks each, in the stern of the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown CV-10. The boys embraced the challenge of this jungle gym displaying their climbing skills with great gusto. After the bunks were made, there was time to tour the hangar deck where many of the planes that flew off this carrier in World War II are on display. The next morning we ate breakfast in the crew s mess followed by a boat tour of the forts in Charleston harbor. A highlight of that trip was the sighting of dolphins. Upon return to the Yorktown, the boys went on many tours of the carrier, a destroyer, and a submarine. That night the movie shown onboard was Midway. The next morning our chaplain, Smith Cutter, conducted a church service in the ship s chapel. A memorable time was had by all and the boys learned much about the history of World War II in the Pacific. As we close our first year and begin another, we praise God for the support of this congregation and the opportunity to learn about God together in the beauty of His great creation. Our new year begins this month with a new meeting day and time. Join us on Monday, August 6 at the HPC Pavilion at 6:15 pm. Walk Worthy!

4 Save the Date: 2018 Women s Retreat Isaiah 58:12 The 2018 Women s Retreat will be November 9th through the 11th at Steiner Bell Lodge in Gatlinburg, TN. The theme for this year s retreat is, Woman of impact, Woman of influence. Our speaker will be Connie Miller. Registration closes October 7th Mission Trip to Uganda HPC will be sending a team to Kiroba Community Presbyterian Church in Uganda this September. The team will leave the afternoon of September 21st and return home on September 30th. The main focus of the trip will be encouraging spiritual growth in this mission church. No special skills are required to join the team as long as you are willing to pray and share your testimony (training in doing so is available). The team will do door to door evangelism, visit in the homes of church members, hold a bible conference, and worship with our sister church in Uganda. Ability to teach men, women, or children will be very helpful. We are especially looking for people to train potential deacons and elders. If you have ever wanted to get more practice in sharing the gospel, this is a great opportunity to do so with a very receptive audience. 5 Fall Sunday School Classes and Women s Bible Study Fall Sunday School Classes The Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark & Luke) - We have been given four accounts of the life and ministry of Christ, three of which reference many of the same events, but all of which were written for a specific purpose and audience in mind. Come join us this fall as we journey through the first three gospels and learn more about the life and teachings of Jesus our King. Allow God s Word to transform your hearts as we behold Christ in the gospels! Meets in M-1 August 19th - December 16th (Taught by Greg Baney). Titus & Fruitful Christian Living - This class is especially designed for married couples. We will explore the topic of collective and individual mentoring in the lives of married couples, guided by a careful study of the epistle of Titus. Members of the class will share their experience both mentoring others and being mentored by others. Meets in M-2 August 19th - December 16th. Three Generations Class (20 s 30 s 40 s) - This class will continue to meet and discuss the book, Uncomfortable. Copies of the book can be obtained in the church office. Meets in the Conference Rm. August 19th - December 16th (Taught by Thomas & Cindy DeMoss). Upcoming Women s Bible Study Adorned by Nancy Wolgemuth: Thursdays from Sept. 6th - Nov. 15th, 6:30 to 8:00pm at Paula Bonner s home. Please join us for a time of fellowship, study, and prayer as we look at Titus 2 to discover how God is a relational God and how we are to respond to Him and others by living in community with one another! We will be studying the book Adorned as a guide and springboard for discussions led by Leigh Anne Grant. We hope you will join us! There is no childcare provided for this study.

Your prayers, love, concern, cards, food, the beautiful plant, and other acts of kindness meant so much to us. A special thanks to Pastor Robert for his words of comfort, to the women who served us delicious food the day of the funeral and for the men s bible study group for everything they did.
