1 ISSUE 369 NOVEMBER 2017 ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH Newsletter SHANNON MORGAN ~ EDITOR All Souls Day: Remembering the Holy Souls in Purgatory Often overshadowed by the two days preceding it, Halloween (October 31) and All Saints Day (November 1), All Souls Day is a solemn celebration in the Roman Catholic Church commemorating all of those who have died and now are in Purgatory, being cleansed of their venial sins and the temporal punishments for the mortal sins that they had confessed and atoning before entering fully into Heaven. The importance of All Souls Day was made clear by Pope Benedict XV ( ), when he granted all priests the privilege of celebrating three Masses on All Souls Day: one for the faithful departed; one for the priest's intentions; and one for the intentions of the Holy Father. Only on a handful of other very important feast days are priests allowed to celebrate more than two Masses. While All Souls Day is now paired with All Saints Day, which celebrates all of the faithful who are in Heaven, it originally was celebrated in the Easter season, around Pentecost Sunday (and still is in the Eastern Catholic Churches). By the tenth century, the celebration had been moved to October; and sometime between 998 and 1030, St. Odilo of Cover the next two centuries, other Benedictines and the Carthusians began to celebrate it in their monasteries as well, and soon it spread to the entire Church. On All Souls Day, we not only remember the dead, but we apply our efforts, through prayer, almsgiving, and the Mass, to their release from Purgatory. There are two plenary indulgences attached to All Souls Day, one for visiting a church and another for visiting a cemetery. (The plenary indulgence for visiting a cemetery can also be obtained every day from November 1-8, and, as a partial indulgence, on any day of the year.) While the actions are performed by the living, the merits of the indulgences are applicable only to the souls in Purgatory. Praying for the dead is a Christian obligation. In the modern world, when many have come to doubt the Church's teaching on Purgatory, the need for such prayers has only increased. The Church devotes the month of November to prayer for the Holy Souls in Purgatory, and participation in the Mass of All Souls Day is a good way to begin the month.
2 Dear Parishioners, Here we are in the month of November and it s our custom to give thanks. This month is also used to celebrate the lives of our Saints and our dearly departed loved ones; I will use a quote from a saint that reflects my sentiments this time of year. I look upon St. Gianna Beretta Molla to guide me in the spirit of thanksgiving. She was a Catholic pediatrician in Italy and she used her career to serve the poor children and as I was saying on All Saints Day she had complications with her pregnancy. The doctors gave her options and one was the idea of aborting the child. She told her family that if the decision down between saving her life or the child then choose the child. A gallant effort was made to save both mother and child but Gianna died about week later. Her holy life was reflected not only in her faithful medical practice but also in the way she exemplified her Catholic faith. She was canonized April 24, 1994 by Pope St. John Paul II and also present was her husband and her daughter, Emanuela Molla. She gives a beautiful quote about gratitude that I would like to share. The secret of happiness is to live moment by moment as to thank God for what he is sending us every day in His goodness. Do we look at each moment day by day as something God sending us? If we did I m sure we would see a wonderful message? My first reaction was that he can take back some of these moments anytime he wants and never let me see it again. I think we can see the deeper lesson with that thought, a lesson to accept it and learn from it as we grow. Jesus gives the most profound words of thanksgiving when he turn to the apostles in the Gospel of Luke and says, Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and said, take this and share it among yourselves; for I tell you that from this time on I shall not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes. I can t think of a better line that expresses thanksgiving than that one. We are to share it among ourselves. We don t have to be perfect doing it we are called to just do it. So when we sit at our tables with our loved ones let s do it with a sense of appreciation for what each one brings and underneath of all the memories, tendencies our families and friends have and our faith beats the deep spirit of love. I know sometimes we fall into the attitude of wisha, coulda and shoulda but we miss out on things. What a thanksgiving it would be if we just thank God for what is happening in front of us. Gianna was right to live moment-by-moment as to thank God for what he is sending us every day which is you. I want to thank each and every one of you for being Christ.

The Pine Bluff Knights are proud to sponsor Deacon Stephen Elser (nephew of Fr. Bill Elser of Hot Springs Village, AR) through the RSVP program. The Pine Bluff Knights are continuing to support St. Peter's Catholic Church soup kitchen through their Food for Families program. The Arkansas State Council of the Knights of Columbus initiative is to place a "Stork" bus in our (Jefferson County) community. The Hope Pregnancy Resource Center in Pine Bluff has been chosen. This is a great opportunity to continue our Pro-life efforts here in Southern Arkansas as well as an ability to educate women (and men) by showing them a look at new life. Jefferson County, AR has the 3rd highest abortion rate in the state of Arkansas. Please help us support this crucial need to provide for the health of mothers and their unborn children. Perhaps, with your support, this will provide abortion-vulnerable women a new way of viewing the life within them. "The goodness of God is the highest object of prayer, and it reaches down to our lowest need. It quickens our soul and gives it life, and makes it grow in grace and virtue." --St. Julian of Norwich Inspire, Empower, Serve

6 St. Joseph Catholic Church Pastoral Council Meeting October 25, 2017 Meeting was called to order by President, Tim Boutwell. Fr. Joe opened the meeting with a prayer. Excused absences for Mary Ann Kizer and Regin Reginio. Minutes of previous were read and approved. Committee/Department Reports Liturgy and Music: New children have joined the choir. One of our teenagers is helping with the children s choir. We could still use help with recruiting adults and children for the choirs. The new hymnals/missals are here and will be placed in the pews beginning November 27 th. We will be learning a new set of ordinaries in the next year. Father stressed concern about the low attendance at Midnight Mass. He suggested we take a census and if there is low attendance at this year s Mass we should consider canceling it in the future. Religious Education: In November the classes will begin a new project called Pack the Pantry. During November and December, breakfast type foods will be collected. In January we will be collecting lunch type foods and then in February we will be collecting foods used for the evening meal. All items should be non-perishable. Classes will be competing against each other. RCIA classed are continuing each Saturday from 10:00 am until 11:30 am. We are averaging an attendance of 4 to 5. Building and Grounds: The outside AC unit for the Choir loft is out PB Heating and Air has replaced the unit. Camera Security System has crashed. This has caused all but one camera to go down. There have been multiple problems through the years thinking this may be a wiring problem. Tony Schneider has moved out of town and we need to find another security business for replacement, will have Jimmy Rinchuso to check on prices and present this to the council. The church brick work and sealing plus stained glass windows resealed and painted has been finished. Still waiting for answer on the purchase of the University Street area by the cemetery. Will check with the Highway Department about the price of $1,200. Rectory sidewalk damage has not been resolved. New Business and Pastor Remarks: The council discussed Neighbor to Neighbor and the problems going on there. Gordon Reese spoke with Director Charlotte England and she explained what was going on. Discussion was held about the amount given each month. It was explained our donation helped 300+ clients to help pay for prescriptions and utilities. The council will ask Mrs. England to come to next Parish Council meeting to discuss further the plans for Neighbor to Neighbor. The next meeting will be November 15, 2017 at 6:15. Meeting was adjourned after closing prayer Respectfully submitted, Angelique Ford
