1 Guard Your Heart! Messenger of Christ JULY 2018 Christ United Methodist Church TN: South 48th Street FAX: Greenfield, WI Rev. Mao Her, Pastor Website: http: //greenfieldchristumc.org/ Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation. (Psalm 42:5 - ESV) How is your soul? Where is your God these days? Have you ever been so cast down that you felt the panting of your soul? When we are anxious or slip into a deep depression, all we can feel is our heart panting. When this happens, like a person who is drowning, we will grab on to whatever we can so we will not drown. In a world that is full of distractions full of corruptions of all sorts, it is easy to lose ourselves and become discouraged. With today s technology we see and hear so much that it is hard to focus on the things that are important in life. When you are discouraged or find yourself panting, what will you do? What will you grab onto? To help us to not grab onto just anything, we will need to guard our heart. In this reason of my life, I am reminded of the wise sayings of King Solomon in Proverbs 4. In this Proverb, King Solomon teaches his children to guard their heart for it is where springs of life flow (v.23). The heart is more than an organ in our body. When the Bible refers to the heart, it refers to our whole being. It is the seat of our consciousness, the core of our decision-making, the center of our mind, our emotions and our will. This is why we must guard it at all costs. How are we to guard it? First, we must guard it from listening to lies. We must avoid lies that we hear, whether they are from the media or from people in our life who try to take captive of our mind. This will keep our soul from becoming torn and tormented. Second, we must focus on our destination this of course means that we must know where we are going. And third, we must stay on the path that will lead us to our destination. There are no short cuts in life! We must stay on course if we want to get to our destination. I want you to know that it is normal to be cast down. Life is hard and it is when we are cast down that we have a tendency to just grab onto anything to make us feel better. Instead of giving into the temptations of the flesh, we must ask God what he wants us to do in this season of our life. We must learn to ask important questions about our life when we are cast down. It is when we are in deep depression and full of anxiety that God is moving us into the next season of our life. So, don t get stuck in your down cast instead place your hope in God! It is my prayer that your soul is well in this season of life. There are times when I feel my soul panting many nights with tears. But I am thankful for God s truth, for it always leads me back on the straight and narrow path, as hard as it may be. It is there that I find strength and words of wisdom to enter a new season of life. Where ever you are right now in your season of life, be reminded that there is hope in God who is our life our salvation! In God we Trust, Pastor Mao Her

7 A Week in the Wilderness Hello all! It s time again to prepare for the yearly invasion of children known as Vacation Bible School. This year we will be using a program called A Week in the Wilderness. Running through both the Old and New Testaments we find a consistent theme, where the people of God go out into the desert/wilderness on a journey to find God. These journeys into the wilderness tell us that to hear and understand God s will, we must separate ourselves, at least for a time, from the distractions of this world. Only this separation from our daily, busy lives allows us to focus on God. A Week in the Wilderness focuses on three of the bible s wilderness stories, those of Moses, Elijah, and Jesus, to help children understand the importance of setting aside time to seek God in their daily lives. When and Where: August 13 th 17 th from 5:00-7:30 each night, here at church What we need: Volunteers: We are looking for someone to lead the Craft Time. Crafts are already planned; we just need someone to lead them. We need a Game leader. We are looking for people to run the dinner each night. Does anyone have small mason jars they would be willing to donate for one of our crafts? There will be a box in the narthex to receive donations. Decorations: If anyone has any camping equipment (Tents, camp stoves, sleeping bags, pillows, blankets, backpacks, lanterns, flashlights, canteens, etc.) they would be willing to donate as decorations for the week, we would greatly appreciate them. The kids will not be using these things. They are for decoration only. You can bring whatever you re willing to let us use on Sunday, August 12 th, and pick it up again the next Sunday, August 19 th. Anyone willing to stay a while after church on Sunday, August 12 th, to help us set up and decorate would be awesome! If you have any questions or would like to help out in any way, please contact Denise Edlund at ddedlund@yahoo.com or Shanna Bude at bude.shanna@gmail.com.
