3 MARK 6:48-56 Jesus saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went He was about to pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, 50 because they all saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke to them and said, Take courage! It is I. Don t be afraid.

4 51 Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed, 52 for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened. 53 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there. 54 As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. 55 They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was.

5 56 And wherever he went into villages, towns or countryside they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.

6 COMMITMENTS Lead with faith and don t freak out. Look for opportunities in the storm. Think mission, not inward. Develop a compelling plan. Boldly trust Jesus is leading us.

8 THE STORM Decades of decline. Pluralistic and post-christian context. Transition in EP Leadership. A few churches discerning dismissal or in crisis. Denominational shifts.

9 OPPORTUNITIES IN THE STORM Changing demographics in our region. Supportive and diverse leadership. Church planting and experimentation stories. Relational and theological harmony.

10 A NEW VISION Affirmed and owned by the Executive Committee and Presbytery. Serves as a guide for next ten years. Leads us beyond ourselves to faithful and fruitful mission in the world.

13 PRESBYTERY RESPONSIBILITIES G The presbytery is responsible for the government of the church throughout its district, and for assisting and supporting the witness of congregations to the sovereign activity of God in the world, so that all congregations become communities of faith, hope, love, and witness.

14 PRESBYTERY RESPONSIBILITIES G Mission determines the forms and structures needed for the church to do its work.

15 PRESBYTERY OF SAN DIEGO MISSION We are spiritual, missional and relational leaders assisting and supporting congregations to become communities of faith, hope, love, and witness.

16 MISSION PRIORITIES 1. Planting churches 2. Vitalizing churches 3. Aligning structure to mission

17 1. PLANTING CHURCHES: CYCLICAL SD We pray for discerners. We gather, equip, supports discerners to become starters. Starters launch new worshipping communities and churches that pray for discerners.

18 2. VITALIZING CHURCHES Pastors support pastors in clusters. Turn around decline. Build on missional experimentation. Commit to best practices and signs of vitality.

19 3. ALIGN STUCTURE TO MISSION EP as missional and strategic leader for planting and vitalizing churches. Committees aligned to mission. Budget and investments aligned to mission.

20 RECOMMENDATIONS Approve mission statement and 10 year vision of planting, vitalizing and aligning. Partner with Cyclical to become Cyclical SD. EP missional leader for planting and vitalizing. Review CRE role for church planting.

21 RECOMMENDATIONS (CONT.) Align budget and committee structure to mission and vision, beginning November Continue alignment process in Cluster pastors for mutual support. Pray for outpouring of God s spirit.
