1 Order of Service for CENTENARY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH WELCOME Easter Sunday April 1, 2018
2 Cover image: Table of Sacred Containers 2018 Watercolor by Brian Frink Available to purchase by silent auction today
3 Welcome Welcome to Worship at Centenary We are delighted to celebrate Easter with you. At Centenary our vision statement reads: As a joyfully inclusive community that champions revolutionary social justice we change lives by putting ministry in the hands of the people. We invite you to get your hands involved in ministry here. You don t have to be a member to take part in the ways the Centenary Community changes lives. Holy Grounds Holy Grounds is a community breakfast served at Centenary six days a week. Besides the hot meal we also provide showers, free wifi, a care closet with essentials, and a great community. Everyone is welcome, Breakfast Church is an abundant table open to all. Come for a cup of coffee, come volunteer to serve, come be a part of this vibrant ministry. Connect with us on the Mankato Holy Grounds Facebook page or talk to Pastor Erica. Drama Ministry at Centenary Centenary s Drama Ministry uses theatre to illuminate social justice, explore spiritual values and build community. Past productions include You re a Good Man Charlie Brown, Butterflies Are Free, Proof and Shrek. Everyone is invited to audition for productions or to help behind the scenes; you don t have to be a member of Centenary to get involved! Our 2018 production will be announced soon. Watch Mankato Centenary on Facebook for details. Cover Artist Statement I decided to create an invented tabletop landscape. The table s proportions are all a little whacky. There are different spaces under the table. Things don t quite line up or the perspective is shifting around. I think this is a way to insert a bit for formal tension. I also think it s a statement about the shifting nature of reality. A table is something that is really solid, or we expect it to be. So the objects sit on a table that is not solid it is unpredictable. The containers have a slight human quality about them, they are kind of anthropomorphic, they are lively. One is a compote, one is cut glass and the other is a misshapen clay-like container. My choices here imply different states of consciousness although I m not sure what the compote is about. The table runner running off the table is symbolic of what weavings are always symbolic of, the interweaving of our lives. The fruit is goofy and weird, that s for all of us oddball non-conformists. I only painted the stems of flowers in the crystal vase because this isn t about flowers. Flowers are beautiful but not sacred, oddness is sacred. Then there is a beam of light coming down on the left because, well, we just have to have a beam of light. -Brian Frink 1

Hymn, No. 302 vs. 1-4 Christ the Lord Is Risen Today Unison Prayer (Bruce Sanguin) O Holy One, as the Risen One broke into the conversation on the road to Emmaus, so we ask that our discourse of despair might be interrupted by a conversation of hope here this morning. In the breaking of bread and sharing of the cup, warmed by the fire of each other s presence, help us to recognize our Companion Host. Help us to know that you are never finished with us: in Christ we are ever emerging, dying, and rising, with Him, in faithful resonance with the strange, intimate presence, causing our hearts to burn with the hope that the best is yet to come. 7 Scripture Luke 24:13-35 Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, What are you discussing with each other while you walk along? They stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days? He asked them, What things? They replied, The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him. Then he said to them, Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory? Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures. As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. But they urged him strongly, saying, Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over. So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us? That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. They were saying, The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon! Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread. 5
