1 September 2017 Shawnee United Methodist Church The Messenger Vol. 16 Our mission: Connect people in a growing, engaged, active relationship with Jesus Christ. From the Pastor As we approach the Labor Day Holiday, it got me to thinking about a scripture that I have heard repeated many times. It comes from the Apostle Paul s letter to the Ephesians and reads from the NIV translation like this: Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord (Eph. 6:7a) Imagine if a serving heart is what motivates us, whether doing something for an employer, co-worker or customer. I came across this story that I believe illustrates this type of an attitude one of serving wholeheartedly as if doing it for the sake of Jesus Christ. This story was told in the book, Know Your Why by Ken Costa and shared on preaching today: Joel Prusak was an employee at the ice cream chain Dairy Queen. One day, as he was serving customers their food, he noticed that a blind man had dropped a twentydollar bill on the floor. A lady standing in line quietly bent down and put the twenty dollars into her own pocket. Young Joey Prusak approached the lady, asking her to give the twenty-dollar bill back to the blind man. She refused, quite aggressively, claiming it was her own. And then Joey did something very generous. Quietly, he opened up his own wallet and handed the blind man a twenty-dollar bill of his own. The man took the money gratefully, and the Dairy Queen resumed normal business. A customer in line observed the whole episode and sent an to the Dairy Queen management, informing them of Joey's act of generosity. The DQ management then posted about it on Facebook, and the event went viral. A couple of days later, Joey received a call from the billionaire Warren Buffet, a big investor in Dairy Queen. He thanked Joey for showing such integrity and asked him to come to the next Dairy Queen investors' meeting. As Joey was an employee and representative of Dairy Queen, Buffet wanted him to be there as an integral part of the fabric of the organization. Joey's act of generosity inspired thousands of people to believe that they, too, could do something small to impact the world for good. It was a small act with a huge impact. And so it is with God. He takes our small acts of obedience or kindness or goodness and multiplies them for his good, and ours. So don't wait until you can do big things; start small. Sometimes small seeds grow into large trees. As we contemplate what we do each day for work this month, let s seriously consider how we might show the smallest acts of obedience, kindness or goodness that will ultimately multiply for His good! In that way we will continue to be a community of faith that connects people in a growing, engaged, active relationship with Jesus Christ. We will donate the washable items to Cross-Lines and non-washables items will go to Shawnee Community Services. The portable closet is outside the entrance to the choir room. Thank you for considering this request. We will be continuing this ministry throughout the winter months. If you have any questions, please call Dee Nelson at or PAPER PRODUCTS NEEDED The United Methodist Women are collecting Paper products and sanitary goods this month for Cross-Lines. Please place in designated box outside the back of the Chapel. SCHOOL SUPPLIES NEEDED The Lectionary Class is asking for donations of school supplies for Merriam Park and Ray Marsh Schools. Anything grade school related (remember wide line paper only) is greatly appreciated, as well as Kleenex and hand sanitizer. There is a box allocated in the hallway by the Chapel. We will collect until the end of September. Thank you! SAVE THOSE PULL TABS The Ambassador Group has been collecting aluminum pull tabs for many years. Thank you for your support in this project. These are periodically taken to Ronald McDonald House. This spring we took 14 pounds to the House. They are always very glad to get them. Their sales of the pull tabs helps them with their mission of housing and feeding parents and children that have patients or are patients in Children's Mercy Hospital. This is a wonderful way to help keep families together during hard, stressful, and financial times. Please continue to save those aluminum tabs. They also want old keys too, so bring items to either Ambassadors or leave them in church office and they will be picked up. THANK YOU! HEALTHY SNACKS FOR SPECIAL ED & FIRST GRADERS The United Methodist Women are collecting healthy snacks for the Special Ed and first graders at Bluejacket- Flint such as Cheez-its, Goldfish, Teddy Grahams, granola bars, peanut butter crackers or other healthy snacks, in individual packages. They are also in need of jackets, coats, gloves, sweat pants, socks, underwear, etc. UMW would appreciate any contributions. The collection box is outside the Chapel.

6 Our next rotation will be starting December 10 at St. Andrew Christian Church, West 127th Street in Olathe. Our last newsletter announcement explained that we will no longer be a host church but will now be a support church. St. Andrew was previously a support church for us and now they have agreed to be a host. They will also be supported by St. Paul's United Methodist. The three churches have been working together for many years to help homeless families regain their stability. We are pleased to be able to continue our support for the IHN program. Watch for the table in the narthex the middle of November so you can reserve your volunteer slot. For those of you who would like to become volunteers the next training session will be at Heritage United Methodist Church, Quivira, Overland Park on September 30, 2017 from 9:30 to 11:30. Seasoned volunteers are welcome to renew their training at that time as well. We have been a part of this mission since it's inception in Johnson County thirteen years ago. If you would like to know more about it look at the web site at jocoihn.org. If you want to know more about our church's involvement call the Primary Coordinator, Marilyn Davis, at or send an to mkdavis320@gmail.com. Would anyone like a regular prayer service? Separate from Sunday services? A time to gather and talk with God together? If you do, what day or evening would be good for you? This would not be intimidating, and you would not be asked to pray out loud by yourself. It would be a service in which we can pray for various things, led by those who feel comfortable leading prayer. A time of prayer is a challenge to carve out in one s life. We also need community for certain kinds of prayers. For example, prayers for those in Texas devastated by the flooding can be multiplied when we re together. Prayers for healing for individuals, or for nations, or for leaders, or for evangelism outreach can be strengthened. Prayers for our church, lifted up as one prayer, can be more effectual. A time set aside by a community brings God into our midst. God is always with us, but He promises that if two or more come together in His name, He will be there. And, that if two or more agree on anything under heaven, it will be answered. Radical stuff. If God is always good, and I believe God is, then when we pray according to God s will, He will answer. And it will be good. Let me or the office or someone on the prayer team know if you have interest in a prayer service, and what time and day would be good for you. We can t pray enough. And prayer will lift you up when you participate. The blessings abound. Even if you come and sit in silence while others pray. Julie@nallave.org; babyelephant9@juno.com; home phone: (913) /cell phone: (913) ALL WOMEN ARE INVITED The Shawnee UMW is sponsoring a program entitled Social Justice for Women. It will be an information program and ALL women are invited to attend. We will be in on September 14, 2017 at 10:00am. The program will be presented by Janelle Johnson, chairperson for the Kansas City District for Journey by Social Action, and she will be addressing social issues. The program should be very interesting and information. Lunch will be served afterward. Please plan to attend. Thanks to all that have brought dishes for the Community Meals, Funeral Meals, Receptions and various other functions! If you have brought a dish and have not picked it up, please do so - any dishes not picked up will be put in the garage sale the first weekend in October. Dishes are currently on the counter on the North wall of the kitchen. If you need help or have questions, please call Pat Hooper, READING GROUP On September 28 at 1:00pm, we will meet in the to discuss THE NIGHTINGALE, by Kristen Hannah. This can t-put-down novel takes place in WWII era France and tells of two sisters, one who joins the French resistance and the other who stays in her village trying to hold her family together despite Nazi occupation. Join us for an interesting discussion.
