Psalm 66:1 The newsletter of First United Methodist Church of Waynesburg October 2016 Dear Friends: I would like to share these words of scripture with you from The Message: The only accurate way to understand ourselves is by what God is and by what he does for us, not by what we are and what we do for him. In this way we are like the various parts of a human body. Each part gets its meaning from the body as a whole, not the other way around. The body we re talking about is Christ s body of chosen people. Each of us finds our meaning and function as a part of his body. But as a chopped-off finger or cut-off toe we wouldn t amount to much, would we? So since we find ourselves fashioned into all these excellently formed and marvelously functioning parts in Christ s body, let s just go ahead and be what we were made to be, without enviously or pridefully comparing ourselves with each other, or trying to be something we aren t. If you preach, just preach God s Message, nothing else; if you help, just help, don t take over; if you teach, stick to your teaching; if you give encouraging guidance, be careful that you don t get bossy; if you re put in charge, don t manipulate; if you re called to give aid to people in distress, keep your eyes open and be quick to respond; if you work with the disadvantaged, don t let yourself get irritated with them or depressed by them. Keep a smile on your face. (Romans 12: 3-8) Fall is a beautiful time of the year. It is a great time to contemplate the beauty of God s creation as we enjoy all the colors. One may even ask how and where do I fit into all of this. How does God want me involved? Is there an area of ministry you are feeling called to get involved in? Give me a call and let s talk. 2 Disciple Fast Track groups are beginning this month. DISCIPLE is a program of disciplined Bible study aimed at developing strong Christian leaders. The study gives the Old and New Testa ments equal time, emphasizing the wholeness of the Bible as a revelation of God. DISCIPLE draws upon the work of scholars, the personal Bible reading and study of the participant, and dy namic group discussion to aid understanding of the Bible. Classes will be on Tuesdays and begin October 4th; from 7:30 9:00 in the Social Hall. Mission is most impactful when: 1. We know God our Master deeply. 2. We make sacrifices for the sake of others. 3. It is done through a community of people. Prayer Focus The Prayer Focus for October will remain in Uganda to raise awareness and support to dig a water well. For the early fall, we have put together a team of people that are willing to serve our church family by helping with home projects in the form of light construction and landscaping. The work can either be done for free, or any money that is donated will be given to support the digging of the water well. Full Time Job Opening at Jumonville This does not happen very often... but Jumonville actually has an opening for a full time staff position! Jumonville is seeking applicants for a new full-time position of Director of Business and Operations. The planned start date for this new staff position would be January Interested applicants should go to for more information and details on the application process. 4 Generous giving always results in God s blessing. He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your resources and increase the harvest of your righteousness (2 Cor. 9:10). Applying Bible Principles One day, as you open the mail, you discover a letter from the credit card company which indicates that because you are such a valued customer, your credit limit is being raised to $5,000. The next day, because you were late sending in a payment of $19.25, you receive another letter from the same company. The second letter makes you feel like a terrible person and states rather emphatically that if you don t pay up immediately, the company will take action against you. What a mixed signal that would be! God never sends mixed signals. He is always consistently clear in providing direction to us, even when His instruction runs counter to our natural tendencies. This is especially true when it comes to our giving. Remember, giving to the Lord s work at First United Methodist Church is not to help poor God pay His bills. Rather, giving is one of God s ways of growing Christians and of causing us to be more like Christ. That s why God calls us to resist the natural tendency to hoard and to be stingy. That s why God calls us to give, not only out of our abundance, but also when our financial resources are limited. John Templeton, founder of the Templeton group of mutual funds, concluded a speech to the International Association for Financial Planning by confiding that he had been asked by a financial planner at the convention to mention the name of the very best opportunity for investing in the world today. Templeton said, I told him that the most risk-free investment, the most rewarding investment was... giving of your income to your church. In my 46 years of experience, I have never known anyone who regretted that investment. I have never known anyone who has made that investment for ten years without being rewarded with both happiness and prosperity. John Templeton was only echoing advice that God had given to Solomon centuries earlier.... one who waters will himself be watered. As you consider your life and giving, will you be part of God s eternal plan by giving in a refreshing manner to the First United Methodist Church ministry today and in the months ahead? Remember this: No one ever went broke trying to outgive God.

5 Café News The cafe is now feeding up to 70 meals in the days following the 15th of the month. Patrons are volunteering to help set up when they think we will be short handed for some reason. Recently, a patron brought in can tabs collected over a period of time. Frances Crawford will see they get to Ronald McDonald House in Morgantown. We hope to be sponsoring 10,000 Villages during the holiday season. Details are being worked out. Stay tuned. Proceeds may benefit the Cafe. We appreciate the garden goodies you have shared with the Cafe. Soon we will be serving soup and hot foods. Fall is here! 6 BACK TO PRISON..after a few weeks off for the summer, we are back to prison with Rick Warren s, Purpose Driven Life. The inmate s are always disappointed that, at the end of the session, there isn t anything else. Most other volunteer programs going into the prison reconnect through a reunion, or a continuing bible study. After some brainstorming among our prison ministry team, we decided to try a dig deeper reunion. We made it available to anyone who has graduated from any of our 40 Day-- 20 week sessions. We have 34 men signed up for our current program, which started Sept. 20. The men are so pleased to be able to continue the Purpose Driven Life study and are really looking forward to getting into the study on a deeper level and sharing their life experiences and thoughts on the curriculum with other inmates. It is a new experience for us, as facilitators, as well. As we know from our personal experiences, we get new insights from the book every time we study it so we are excited to be able to meet for an additional 10 weeks with the men after they have had time to think about and apply what they initially learned from their first session. Matthew 25:36-40 reminds us that we are to take the Good News of Jesus Christ to all people, including those in prison. Please continue to pray for us as we are obedient to that which we are called to do. For Sale: 2 burial plots at the Greene County Memorial Park $500 for both Contact: James Reynolds at or james.reynolds@noaa.gov Help Needed : We are in need of volunteers to help out with the Kids Kafe program on Monday nights. We would like to have multiple people willing to help the children with their homework and to teach Bible lessons. The commitment would be for 1-2 nights a month and the program lasts hours. This is a great way to reach out to the children in our community and we would love to have numerous helpers involved! Please consider helping us with this need and see Alex for more information.
