1 * THE APOSTLES CREED I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. THE OFFERTORY Berglund Robert Buckley Farlee THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM People: With joy and thanksgiving we welcome this child into Christ s church. We are the family of God for we are all one in Christ. 19TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME August 10, :00 a.m. *THE BAPTISMAL RESPONSE, DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Hymn 542) (Choir sings verse 1 as our baptismal response. People: Day to day pours forth speech and night declares knowledge. Never for a moment are we outside of your constant care. And yet, things happen. Life tumbles in and your promises seem distant. We retreat into fear. We worry about what we cannot change. Forgive our anxious fears. Lead us to be the people you created us to be: disciples of Jesus Christ, in whose name we name our prayers. Amen. FLOWERS THIS SUNDAY The flowers today are given to the glory of God in celebration of the sixth anniversary of Sarah and Peter Chatel. SERVICE MUSIC Suite Gothique - French composer Léon Boëllmann ( ) composed Suite Gothique in An admirer of Caser Franck and Camille Saint-Saëns, Boëllmann s organ repertoire is grounded in the French romantic school with a turn-of-the-century Post-romantic esthetic. Suite Gothique, his better-known composition, is mostly remembered by the closing Toccata. The third movement, Prière à Notre-Dame, is a soft lyrical piece, intended to be a prayer to Our Lady. - We invite those who wish to remain seated until the postlude has ended. BAPTISM THIS SUNDAY Hugh Thomas Garrison, son of Kelly and Ed Garrison, will receive the sacrament of baptism this morning. August 10, 2014 WELCOMING OUR CHILDREN IN WORSHIP You will notice this morning that our elementary age children will return to worship during the offering. As our Sunday School year kicks off today, we are strengthening our offerings for the children by providing them an opportunity to participate in a bit more worship time while still having their own age appropriate children's worship. By returning during the offering, they can participate by presenting their own offerings alongside those of the adults, they can be present with their families on Communion Sundays, and they can be surrounded by the congregation that shares in their baptismal vows to support them in their faith journeys. Please know that it may take a few weeks for this re-entry to worship to become a smooth process. We appreciate your prayers as we continually seek ways to help our children learn that this time of worship is indeed for them too. GIVE TO THORNWELL Four times a year, we receive a special offering during worship. This morning, please place your offering in a child-made envelope in your bulletin to give to Thornwell Home for Children. CONGREGATIONAL MEETING Following worship this morning, we will take a congregational vote to call Rev. Drew Stockstill to become our full-time installed Associate Pastor. Please be here for this important meeting. Child care will continue. MEAL AT JOURNEY Many thanks to the MPC softball team for providing this evening s meal for 30 men at Journey. A SPECIAL DATE Don t miss being in church next Sunday, August 17 for our annual This I Believe Sunday. Homilies will be delivered by three of our Morningside members: Betsy Holland, Lisa Jern, and Alex Page.
4 LYDIA CIRCLE Our next Lydia Circle gathering will be Thursday, August 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. Suzanne MacPherson has graciously agreed to host (828 Clemont Drive; behind Inman Middle School). There is parking on the street. Please bring something to drink or an appetizer/dessert to share. RSVP to Lele Ruby leleruby@bellsouth.net. We look forward to seeing everyone. SHEPHERDS, TEACHERS & VOLUNTEERS - As we kicked off the Sunday School year this morning, we'd like to extend a special thank you to all our shepherds, teachers and volunteers. Each age group has a volunteer shepherd that coordinates the lists and sends you friendly reminders. Kelly Garrison - infants & toddlers; Amy Millard & Lisa Harris - twos; Kim Nuckols - threes and fours; Robin Hackney - Kindergarten-1st grade; Lele Ruby - 2nd-3rd grade; Joanna Irwin - 4th-5th grade. We are pleased to have Debbi Loomis continue as our K-1st teacher and Jessica Coons has returned as our 2nd-3rd grade teacher. Watch for news on 4th-5th grade coleaders in next few weeks. - All our volunteers are greatly appreciated and we welcome even more. With our younger classes, we often have parents rotating off and on as they welcome new members to their family, so support from the whole congregation is always needed to provide a loving environment for our children. Contact any shepherd or Program Director Melinda Sandkam if you can help out once every weeks. - The elementary age are discovering improvements to each of their rooms this morning and tweaks to our children's worship. Peak in their rooms any week to see these new and exciting changes. Three and fours volunteers will be doing some training in next few weeks. Mark your calendars to meet in Room 011 at 9:45 a.m. either August 17 or 24. CHILDREN'S CHOIR Practices for Cherub and Treble Choirs start on Wednesday, August 27. If you didn't get a chance to talk with Children's Choir Director Rebecca Shipley at Sunday School Kick Off this morning contact her at rebeccashipley@ pop.mindspring.com to let her know of your interest. Older elementary will be in Treble Choir which will now meet on Wednesdays 4:15-5pm each week and younger elementary will be in the Cherub Choir meeting 5-5:30 p.m. SANCTUARY FLOWERS A flower calendar is posted on the bulletin board in the hallway outside the Session Room, and if you wish to give flowers in honor or in memory of a loved one, we invite you to write your name and phone number next to the desired date. It is possible to share a date with other members if you want to give one arrangement or you may sign up alone to give both arrangements. Contact Anna Best in the church office for more information. SAVE THE DATE It s not too soon to mark off October on your calendar and plan to get away to cool and lovely Montreat, NC, for our sixth annual allchurch retreat! Each year, it s been an event to remember for the whole family. Watch for registration materials this month. Sign up and pay at the Congregational Lunch August 24 and save $25 per person. Christian Education at Morningside ADULT CLASSES When two different groups meet from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. on Sunday mornings, there will be plenty to discuss and learn, August 17 through September 28. Dr. Carol Senf will lead a discussion of The Psalms in Room 201. CHILDREN S CLASSES Today, the Pre-K class will hear the story Lions and Bears and learn how young David protected the sheep in his care.
