2 August 3, 2014 Order of Worship 11:00 a.m. Thank you for making sure your cell phone is off during the worship hour. THE GATHERING Landon Dillard The Lord be with you. And also with you. THE PRELUDE Prelude in D Major J.S. Bach *THE CALL TO WORSHIP THE CALL TO CONFESSION Praise the Lord! I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation. Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them, Full of honor and majesty is his work, and his righteousness endures forever. He has gained renown by his wonderful deeds; the Lord is gracious and merciful. Then let us worship God, who creates us, redeems and sustains us. Amen. - Psalm 111:1-4 *THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 455 All Creatures of Our God and King ( verses 1 through 3, 6) THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION Eternal God, remind us of our baptism as we prepare to come to your table. Remind us of the miraculous abundance of your good creation, from which all we need is taken, and which we share with all of your creatures. We ask these things because we know that we have sinned and we need forgiveness. We have sometimes taken more than we need. We have sometimes held what was needed by others. We need to be reminded that your abundance is meant for all, not just for some. So as we remember the promise of your grace we enjoy, prepare our hearts to receive your word and sacrament, through our Lord Jesus. Amen. A MOMENT OF SILENCE (for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession) * (The asterisk indicates parts of the worship when the congregation is invited to stand as they are able.) THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON By grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing: it is the gift of God - not the result of works, so that no one might boast. For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before hand to be our way of life. Believe the promise of the Gospel: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. - Ephesians 2:8-10 * THE CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Hymn 485) Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the earth hear his voice! Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the people rejoice! O come to the Father through Jesus the Son, and give him the glory: great things he hath done! * THE PEACE OF CHRIST (Children ages 3-10 are invited to leave after the Peace of Christ for special classes. Threes, fours & fives are in Room 011; K-2 nd grade in Room 003; 3 rd- 5 th grade in worship). THE CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH (Visitors and members are invited to sign the blue friendship register pad and pass it down the pew.) Mozart Ave verum corpus, natum de Maria Virgine, vere passum, immolatum in cruce pro homine, cujus latus perforatum unda fluxit et sanguine, esto nobis praegustatum in mortis examine. English translation: Hail, true body, born of the Virgin Mary, truly suffered, sacrificed on the cross for mankind, whose pierced side flowed with water and blood, before us a foretaste in the trial of death. SERVICE MUSIC Prelude and Fugue in D Major, BWV, 532 The Prelude and Fugue in D major was probably composed in 1710, although this is not certain. However, it was definitely written before Bach codified the clear two-section prelude and fugue in the form of what is used in the The Well-Tempered Clavier, BWV , which was composed in This is because BWV 532 features a lengthy, complex, self-contained fugue preceded by a multisectional prelude. The prelude begins with pedal scales followed by an explosive response in the hands in a free style. The middle section is noted alla breve and is stricter. It ends with an Adagio section filled with extreme dissonances that resolve beautifully. The Fugue is a made of a simple 4-note subject that repeats. It requires virtuosic pedal technique, especially in the final pedal cadenza, which brings this fiery fugue to a close. - We invite those who wish to remain seated until the postlude has ended. THANK YOU SALLY Our 4th and 5th grade families threw a party this morning during the Sunday School hour to thank August 3, 2014 Sally Horne for her leadership in children's worship this past year. MPC is grateful for all that she has brought to our children's programs including her time with us on the church retreat last fall. We wish Sally well as she starts law school at the University of South Carolina this fall. CONGRATULATIONS TO CHRIS PETERS We extend our deep congratulations to our youth director Chris Peters, who has accepted a call to become the associate pastor of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Fairhope, AL. Chris will conclude his service at Morningside today. Chris has developed our youth program the last three years including mission trips, Montreat Youth Conferences and confirmation. We wish Chris and Lauren all the best in this new chapter of their lives together. SUNDAY SCHOOL KICK-OFF Kids of all ages are invited to a light breakfast and fun activities with their parents in Fellowship Hall next Sunday, August 10, from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. There will be face painting, animal costumes, games, music with Mrs. Shipley and moving up to new classes. Don t miss the celebration of a new school year. VOLUNTEER FOR CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS The summer is not a slow time for children's programming at MPC - especially with Sunday School Kick Off being the second Sunday in August. If anyone has 2-4 hours this week, there are quite a few projects needing attention at this time - reorganizing class supplies, preparing new music notebooks for our elementary age Children's Worship, and preparing signage, crafts and games for kick-off. Contact Melinda if you have a few hours to give towards these efforts.

4 CONGREGATIONAL MEETING Following worship next Sunday, August 10, we will take a congregational vote to call Rev. Drew Stockstill to become our full-time installed Associate Pastor. Please be here for this important meeting. Child care will continue. GIVE TO THORNWELL Four times a year, we receive a special offering during worship. Next Sunday, August 10, watch for a child-made envelope in your bulletin and consider what you are able to give to Thornwell Home for Children. This Presbyterian Home in South Carolina serves children throughout the southeast as they encounter temporary or longterm needs for a home. We had a guest from Thornwell at Mission Camp this year and the kids asked some great questions about the challenges the children at Thornwell are facing and what can be done to help them overcome them. MEAL AT JOURNEY Many thanks to the MPC softball team for providing the August 10 meal for 30 men at Journey. NEW ADULT EDUCATION CLASSES When two different groups meet from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. on Sunday mornings, there will be plenty to discuss and learn, August 17 through September 28. Using Paul's letters to look at the issues the early Christians wrestled with, the class topic in Room 107 will be The First Christians and how we wrestle with many of the same issues today. Dr. Carol Senf will lead a discussion of The Psalms in Room 201. MORNINGSIDE PRESBYTERIAN PRESCHOOL (MPP) For the next school year, there are still openings for toddlers (who must be 15 months old by Sept. 1) and one opening for pre-k. As you consider when to start your child in preschool, keep in mind that once you are part of the preschool community, your child has a spot for subsequent years. Twos classes are often filled with current students before we reach open enrollment. SANCTUARY FLOWERS A flower calendar is posted on the bulletin board in the hallway outside the Session Room, and if you wish to give flowers in honor or in memory of a loved one, we invite you to write your name and phone number next to the desired date. It is possible to share a date with other members if you want to give one arrangement or you may sign up alone to give both arrangements. Contact Anna Best in the church office for more information. SAVE THE DATE It s not too soon to mark off October on your calendar and plan to get away to cool and lovely Montreat, NC, for our sixth annual allchurch retreat! Each year, it s been an event to remember for the whole family. Watch for further details in the next couple of months. CONGRATULATIONS TO Mason Copeland and Elisabeth Smith on their July 26 marriage in Colorado. Christian Education at Morningside ADULT CLASSES Next Sunday, the joint Adult Education class continues exploring Old Testament texts you might not have heard in church, and looking closer at some stories you thought you knew. Join us Sunday mornings in Room 201 at 9:45 a.m. CHILDREN S CLASSES Today, the preschool children will hear the story Lions Lions and learn how God honored Daniel's faithfulness. Elementary classes will read Colossians 3 to learn how Christians are to live together in peace and love.
