THE PARABLES OF LENT R E C E I V E T H E S A C R I F I C E THE PARABLE of the LANDOWNER and the TENANTS Complete Script for Worship Leaders The Opening begins with verses of this hymn sung by the congregation to tune Were You There : Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? The Opening continues with this reading from Matthew 21:33-45, is spoken by the pastor or other worship leader: P P[Jesus said,] Hear another parable. There was a master of a house who planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and built a tower and leased it to tenants, and went into another country. When the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to get his fruit. And the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. Again he sent other TZ5 15
servants, more than the first. And they did the same to them. Finally he sent his son to them, saying, They will respect my son. But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and have his inheritance. And they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants? They said to him, He will put those wretches to a miserable death and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons. Jesus said to them, Have you never read in the Scriptures: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes? Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits. And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him. When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them. The Opening continues with this responsive reading, spoken responsively by the pastor and the congregation: PPOn this holy day the Son of God is the stone that the builders rejected. CCHe has become the cornerstone. PPOn this holy day the Son of God is thrown out of the vineyard and killed. CCHe has become the sacrifice. PPOn this holy day the Son of God becomes sin for us so that we would become the righteousness of God. CCThe Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes. PPJesus said, Have you never read in the Scriptures: The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone? CCThe Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes. PPJesus said, Anyone who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed. CCGrant me your grace, O God, that my faith in Jesus would be pleasing and acceptable to you. 16 TZ5
The Opening continues with a verse of this hymn sung by the congregation to tune Were You There : Were you there when they laid him in the tomb? Were you there when they laid him in the tomb? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they laid him in the tomb? The Confession and Absolution are spoken responsively by the pastor and the congregation: PPToday we remember that it is our sin that nailed Jesus to the tree of the cross. His suffering and death are the result of the evil we confess before him, begging for the forgiveness that he won for us. CCMost merciful God, we confess that our very nature is sinful. We do not love you with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. We do not love our neighbors as ourselves. We are simply tenants in your world, and with our sinful thoughts, words and deeds we brazenly say, This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and have his inheritance. On this dark day we beg your grace-filled pardon. Forgive us, most holy God. PPAt the cross of Calvary, Jesus Christ became sin for you. He bore all of your sinfulness in his body on the tree. By his wounds you are healed of the disease of sin and by his grace you are made whole once again. Because of his perfect sacrifice, all of your sins are forgiven in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Hymn of Response is sung by the congregation to tune Der Am Kreuz : On my heart imprint your image, blessed Jesus, King of grace, That life s riches, cares and pleasures never may your work erase; Let the clear inscription be: Jesus, crucified for me, Is my life, my hope s foundation, and my glory and salvation! The Prayer of the Day is spoken by the pastor or other worship leader: PPHeavenly Father, you sent your one and only Son into this world, and the world did not receive him with joy but sent him to a cross. By this most perfect sacrifice, help our eyes to see Jesus for who he is and what he has done for us. Take our scarlet sins and make us as white as snow. Amen. TZ5 17
The Old Testament Reading, Isaiah 53:1-12, is spoken by the pastor or other worship leader: PPWho has believed what he has heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth. By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people? And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors. The Epistle Reading, 2 Corinthians 5:16-21, is spoken by the pastor or other worship leader: PPFrom now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 18 TZ5
The Gospel Reading, Mark 15:21-39, is spoken by the pastor or other worship leader: P P And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. And it was the third hour when they crucified him. And the inscription of the charge against him read, The King of the Jews. And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left. And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself, and come down from the cross! So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, He saved others; he cannot save himself. Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe. Those who were crucified with him also reviled him. And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani? which means, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? And some of the bystanders hearing it said, Behold, he is calling Elijah. And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down. And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God! The Children s Sermon is delivered by the pastor or other worship leader: (No objects are necessary for this children s sermon; if you wish you may want to play a game of musical chairs, unless you feel that doing so on Good Friday would not be in keeping with the decorum of your particular congregation.) PPHow many of you have ever played a game of Musical Chairs? You know how it goes: chairs are set up in a circle, but there is one more person than there are chairs. While music plays, everyone walks around the chairs. When the music stops, everyone sits down except for the one person who can t find a chair. That person is rejected and has to sit out of the game. Then a chair is taken away and the music plays again until another person is rejected and has to sit down. The game keeps going until one person is left. If you ve ever played that game, you know what it feels like to be rejected and have to sit out of the game. It doesn t feel very good at all. In today s Bible reading Jesus tells TZ5 19
a story about a man who owns a garden where he grows grapes. He sends people to collect his grapes after they are harvested. But the people who work at the garden keep rejecting the people that come to collect the grapes. They treat them very, very badly and then kick them out of the garden. Finally the owner of the garden sends his son to collect the grapes because he thinks they would never mistreat his son. Not only do they mistreat him, they reject him and kill him. Jesus is really telling us a story about what happens today on Good Friday. When we sin, when we don t love God or love and serve other people, we reject Jesus. That s why he had to go to the cross to die. He had to die on the cross so that our sins would be forgiven. God should have rejected us because we don t always love him and we don t always love other people. We sin against God and we sin against other people. What happens on Good Friday is that, instead of rejecting and punishing us, God rejects and punishes Jesus in our place. He suffers instead of us. He dies instead of us. He does all of this so that God will never reject all of us who believe in him. Because of Jesus death on the cross we have the gift of eternal life. Dear Jesus, you were rejected by God on the cross for us so that we will never be rejected by him. Because of your death on Good Friday our sins are forgiven and we will have eternal life with you. Thank you, Jesus. Amen. The Sermon Hymn is sung by the congregation to the tune Hamburg LM: When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss And pour contempt on all my pride. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast Save in the death of Christ, my God; All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to his blood. See, from his head, his hands, his feet Sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e er such love and sorrow meet Or thorns compose so rich a crown? 20 TZ5
Tune... O Lamm Gottes, Unschuldig TZ5
The Closing Hymn is sung by the congregation to the tune O Lamm Gottes, Unschuldig : Lamb of God, pure and holy, who on the cross didst suffer, Ever patient and lowly, thyself to scorn didst offer. All sins thou borest for us, else had despair reigned o er us: Have mercy on us, O Jesus! O Jesus! Lamb of God, pure and holy, who on the cross didst suffer, Ever patient and lowly, thyself to scorn didst offer. All sins thou borest for us, else had despair reigned o er us: Thy peace be with us, O Jesus! O Jesus! TZ5 41
