THE PARABLES OF LENT R E C E I V E L O V E THE PARABLE of the LOST SHEEP Complete Script for Worship Leaders The Blessing of the Palms is spoken responsively by the pastor and the congregation: (The congregation raises their palm branches) PPWhen we were lost our Savior sought us out, found us and rested us on his shoulders. CCOur palms are raised in glory and honor to the One who has sought us out only and especially because he loves us. PPLet us pray. O God who found us, bless these branches raised in your name and to your glory, that they would be used as a way of honoring your sacrifice and giving you praise. Be present in our praise that the words of grace you speak to us would resound back to you in shouts of joy and songs of acclaim. In the great name of Jesus we pray. Amen. The Palm Sunday Reading, John 12:12-15, is spoken by the pastor or other worship leader: PPThe next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel! And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey s colt! TZZ 15
The Processional Hymn is sung by the congregation to tune Valet Will Ich Dir Geben D: All glory, laud, and honor to you, Redeemer, King, To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring. You are the King of Israel and David s royal Son, Now in the Lord s name coming, our King and Blessed One. All glory, laud, and honor to you, Redeemer, King, To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring. The company of angels is praising you on high, And we with all creation in chorus make reply. All glory, laud, and honor to you, Redeemer, King, To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring. The multitude of pilgrims with palms before you went; Our praise and prayer and anthems before you we present. All glory, laud, and honor to you, Redeemer, King, To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring. To you before your Passion they sang their hymns of praise; To you, now high exalted, our melody we raise. All glory, laud, and honor to you, Redeemer, King, To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring. As you received their praises, accept the prayers we bring, O source of ev ry blessing, our good and gracious king. All glory, laud, and honor to you, Redeemer, King, To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring. The Confession and Absolution is spoken responsively by the pastor and the congregation: PPAs Jesus enters Jerusalem and this Holy Week begins, our hearts are turned to the Lord in repentant confession, for it is our sin that draws him to the cross and causes him to give his life. CCMost merciful God, like lost sheep we have strayed from you. Because of our sinfulness and selfishness we have sought the things that give us pleasure instead 16 TZZ
of following after the things that show our faith in you and our love for others. We are lost in the wilderness of our sin by what we think, say and do, and by the things that we leave undone. Out of your great love and mercy, find us, your lost sheep, forgive us of our sin and grant us your grace, mercy and forgiveness. PPLike a shepherd who searches for a lost sheep, Jesus came searching for us in the midst of our sin solely because he desired to give us what we need the most: the forgiveness of all of our sins. He came from heaven to earth to accomplish this monumental task. Because we were lost in sin, Jesus searching heart found us and now forgives us. Because of the sacrifice of the Good Shepherd, all your sins are forgiven in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Prayer of the Day is spoken by the pastor or other worship leader: PPLord Jesus Christ, as we celebrate your triumphal, yet peaceful, entry into Jerusalem, remind us that you entered Jerusalem on that first Palm Sunday to seek us out and to create the way that leads to our salvation. For we were lost in our sins, doomed to die eternally and assaulted by the attacks of the devil. But now that we have been found by the Savior of the world, we are free wave our palm branches in praise to you, the one who lifts us on your shoulders and carries us home. Amen. The Old Testament Reading, Isaiah 66:12-14, is spoken by the pastor or other worship leader: PPFor thus says the Lord: Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the nations like an overflowing stream; and you shall nurse, you shall be carried upon her hip, and bounced upon her knees. As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem. You shall see, and your heart shall rejoice; your bones shall flourish like the grass; and the hand of the Lord shall be known to his servants, and he shall show his indignation against his enemies. The Epistle Reading, 1 Peter 2:13-25, is spoken by the pastor or other worship leader: PPBe subject for the Lord s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor. Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust. For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. TZZ 17
For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. The Gospel Reading, Luke 15:1-7, is spoken by the pastor or other worship leader: PPNow the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him. And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, This man receives sinners and eats with them. So he told them this parable: What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost. Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance. The Children s Sermon is delivered by the pastor or other worship leader: (Needed: 100 items; they could be pennies, blocks or pieces of candy like Skittles or M&M s) PP100 is a big number, isn t it? It takes a little while to count all the way up to 100. I have here 100 (items). Now what if I would lose one of these (items)? I might say to myself: That s OK. I don t have to look for it. I still have 99 of these. I ll never miss just one. But let s say that I really, really wanted to find that one (item). I wanted to find it so badly that I spent time looking and looking. It cost me time, effort and money because I couldn t go to work while I was looking for it. When I still couldn t find it, I paid someone else to help me look. We looked so hard that we finally found it. And even though it cost me time, effort and money I was extremely happy that I had found my (item). It seems kind of silly to spend all that time and effort to find one little (item), doesn t it? Some people might think I wasn t in my right mind. They might think it is ridiculous to do all that just to find one tiny, little (item). 18 TZZ
But that s what Jesus does for you and me. In today s Bible reading he tells the story of a shepherd who has 100 sheep, but leaves 99 of them behind just to find one that has been lost. And when the shepherd finds the sheep he puts it on his shoulders and carries it back home, as happy as he can be. Some people might think that one tiny little person like you or me doesn t matter. They might think that if one person like you or me doesn t believe in Jesus as our Savior it just doesn t matter. But Jesus doesn t think that at all. On Palm Sunday Jesus came into Jerusalem riding on a donkey. Already then he knew that on Good Friday he would be dying on the cross for you and me. And that s what Jesus did: he died on the cross and rose again from the dead for us. But he didn t stop there. He came and found us in our baptism to forgive us of all of our sins and rescue us from sin, death and the devil. In a way you could say that at that very moment he picked you up like the little lamb in the story and carried you home into his family, as happy as he could be. You were worth so much to him that he paid the price of his life for you. That s what we will see and celebrate this week as we follow him to the Upper Room on Maundy Thursday, go with him to the cross on Good Friday and run to the tomb on Easter Sunday to see that he has risen from the dead. Dear Jesus, you care so much about me that you died on the cross and rose again from the dead. You care so much about me that you found me in my baptism and brought me into your family. Thank you for spending your life on the cross to pay for my sins. Amen. The Sermon Hymn is sung by the congregation to the tune Southwell SM: We listen as the Word like scattered seed is sown, For as each parable is heard Christ s kingdom is made known. We wander our own ways, but Jesus seeks the lost. With his own blood the price he pays, his life the precious cost. In ev ry time of need, before the judgment throne, Your work, O Lamb of God, I ll plead, your merits, not my own. TZZ 19
The Sermon is delivered by the pastor: Theme verse: Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance. Luke 15:7 PPOn this Palm Sunday, we watch Jesus ride headlong into Jerusalem to the hosannas of the people. We remember that he came to the city to save the lost. Jesus was familiar with crowds. He once described the weary and scattered crowds of people as wandering sheep without a shepherd (Mt 9:36), and he had compassion on them. Not long before he came riding into Jerusalem, Jesus had visited the home of the sinful tax collector Zacchaeus. That visit moved Zacchaeus to repentance, and Jesus said to him, Today salvation has come to this house.... For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost (Lk 19:9-10). And the hosannas we hear this Palm Sunday, each one cries out, Save us, we pray! or even Salvation has arrived! The word began as a cry for help (Psalm 118:25) and later became a celebration of God s moving among his people to save them. Let there be no mistake, the figure riding into the city atop a little donkey, he is all about saving the lost. That is why he came. That is why, within a week, he will die. Palm Sunday reminds us that where the lost are sought and found there will be celebration. This was the central meaning of Jesus parable of the lost sheep and of the other two parables of the lost in Luke 15. The scribes and Pharisees simply found no joy in seeing a sinner repent. They were more committed to judging sinners and thanking God they were not among them. So Jesus tells the story of a shepherd who leaves ninety-nine sheep behind to chase after one lost sheep, and when he finds the sheep, he lifts it to his shoulders with joy and brings it home so that the whole family and village can rejoice with him. A pastor from Minnesota tells the story of his church s first living nativity scene with costumed characters and live animals, including four sheep. Unfortunately, the fence around the stable that first year was not built high enough, and, sure enough, the lead sheep leaped over the fence and the other three followed. The pageant underway was now interrupted as the pastor and several others took off after the sheep. He went after the lead sheep and shouted instructions as to who would chase after which sheep. About half a mile up the frontage road of a major highway, the pastor tackled that sheep into a huge snow drift. Remembering the pictures of the shepherd in Jesus parable, he then attempted to lift the sheep on his shoulders, but the sheep was so heavy the pastor wrenched his back and lay in the snow drift clinging to that 20 TZZ

O Savior meek, pursue thy road, With palms and scattered garments strowed. Ride on, ride on in majesty! In lowly pomp ride on to die. O Christ, thy triumphs now begin O er captive death and conquered sin. Ride on, ride on in majesty! The angel armies of the sky Look down with sad and wond ring eyes To see the approaching sacrifice.
