7 Lenten Series 2018 Theme: Jesus Insurgency The 2018 Lenten Season commenced on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at 12 Noon with Ash Wednesday. The Liturgy included Holy Communion and the Imposition of Ashes. The 2018 Lenten Season Series entitled Jesus Insurgency was introduced at the service. Based on the book with the same title, co-written by Dottie Escobedo- Frank and Rudy Rasmus, pastors in the United Methodist Church, the Lenten theme this year will explore the realities of living The Way of Jesus in a time of great challenge for the institution of the church. The Way of Jesus is alive in the justice-seeking and compassionate caring that is going on in solidarity with the most vulnerable and oppressed people of the world. Filling the pews on Sunday Morning is less of an indication of the health of a congregation than it used to be. Filling the emptiness and ending the despair of those often left outside of the four walls of the church is what the Jesus Insurgency is all about. You are invited to join Pastor Robin in this season of self and communal reflection and to meditate on the meaning of faith, fellowship and the future church. The Lenten Series will continue after Ash Wednesday each Wednesday up to Holy Week. Wednesday, March 14 th From the Edge Wednesday, March 21 st Postscript All sessions will begin at 12 noon and conclude at 12:50pm. Meditative music, purposeful prayer and relevant reflection will carry the shared time of worship and preparation for the coming Easter Celebration. If you would like to order a plant for the Sanctuary Flower Garden, please complete the order form and attach payment (checks made payable to Arch Street UMC,) and place in the offering plate with your form or return form to the office. Please order no later than Sunday, March 25th. (Order form insert is in your bulletin.) Welcome to Grace Café Grace Café (ASUMC s outreach to folks currently without homes) is open every Sunday through the end of June. After a brief period of faith sharing, those gathered will enjoy a homecooked meal hosted by volunteer groups. 200 people attended last week s Grace Cafe. Today s dinner is provided by Grace Café staff and volunteers. There are still openings for hosts to bring food and prepare a meal for about 200 people. If you know of a group that would like to assist in this important mission, please have them contact the church office at or Darlene DiDomineck and Carmen Francesco at gracecafephilly@gmail.com Greeters, servers and clean-up crew are needed and always welcome.

10 POWER s monthly Action Team meeting will take place on Tuesday, March 13th at the POWER Office (1429 N. 11th St., Philadelphia, PA 19122). Doors will open at 6:00 PM for fellowship, and pizza will be served at 6:30 PM. Our meeting will begin promptly at 7:00 PM and conclude at 9:00 PM. During the meeting, each strategy team will present its vision for improving our communities through campaign work for the upcoming months. We look forward to a night of fellowship and the opportunity to work together to build a beloved community that serves all. Please be sure to RSVP so that appropriate accommodations can be made. A Look at Our Faithfulness Combined attendance for last Sunday March 4th was 129. Your tithes, gifts, and offerings help ASUMC make a difference in our community. 25 people attended the Lenten Service on March 7 th. BOOK DISCUSSION TODAY: Turn my Mourning into Dancing : Join the United Methodist Women today as we talk about Henri Nouwen s Turn my Mourning into Dancing. Don t worry if you have not finished he book or even started it. Come join us anyway in the second floor conference room immediately following the 11 am worship service. Besides the book discussion, we will discuss further plans for the spring. Finally,we will probably discuss this book over two months, so you will have time to read more before the April meeting. Amazon describes the book as follows: In times of suffering, simplistic answers ring empty and hollow. But Henri Nouwen, a beloved spiritual thinker and author, offers real comfort in the concrete truth of God's constancy. Nouwen suggests that by greeting life's pains with something other than despair, we can find surprising joy in our suffering. He suggests that the way through suffering is not in denial, but rather in living fully in the midst of the trials life brings our way.
