All stand, as able Officiant All Lord, open our lips. And our mouth shall proclaim your praise. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now and will be forever. Amen. Alleluia!
Officiant The Holy One is in our midst: O come, let us worship.
VENITE Come, let us sing to the Lord; let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before God s presence with thanksgiving and raise to the Lord a shout with psalms. For you are a great God; you are great above all gods. In your hand are the caverns of the earth, and the heights of the hills are yours also. The sea is yours, for you made it, and your hands have molded the dry land.
Come, let us bow down and bend the knee, and kneel before the Lord our Maker. For you are our God, and we are the people of your pasture and the sheep of your hand. Oh, that today we would hearken to your voice! Officiant The Holy One is in our midst: O come, let us worship.
All are seated. The Psalm is said responsively by whole verse, the Officiant beginning and responding. PSALM 16 Protect me, O God, for I take refuge in you;* I have said to the Lord, You are my Lord, my good above all other. All my delight is upon the godly that are in the land,* upon those who are noble among the people.
But those who run after other gods* shall have their troubles multiplied. Their libations of blood I will not offer,* nor take the names of their gods upon my lips. O Lord, you are my portion and my cup;* it is you who uphold my lot. My boundaries enclose a pleasant land;* indeed, I have a goodly heritage.
I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel;* my heart teaches me, night after night. I have set the Lord always before me;* because he is at my right hand I shall not fall. My heart, therefore, is glad, and my spirit rejoices;* my body also shall rest in hope. For you will not abandon me to the grave,* nor let your holy one see the Pit.
You will show me the path of life;* in your presence there is fullness of joy, and in your right hand are pleasures forevermore. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;* As it was in the beginning is now and will be forever. Amen.
The 1 st Reading (Daniel 4:28-37) A Reading from the Book of Daniel. At the end of twelve months King Nebuchadnezzar was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, and the king said, Is this not magnificent Babylon, which I have built as a royal capital by my mighty power and for my glorious majesty? While the words were still in the king s mouth, a voice came from heaven: O King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is declared: The kingdom has
departed from you! You shall be driven away from human society, and your dwelling shall be with the animals of the field. You shall be made to eat grass like oxen, and seven times shall pass over you, until you have learned that the Most High has sovereignty over the kingdom of mortals and gives it to whom he will. Immediately the sentence was fulfilled against Nebuchadnezzar. He was driven away from human society, ate grass like oxen, and his body was bathed with the dew of heaven, until his hair grew as long as eagles feathers and his nails became like birds claws.
When that period was over, I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my reason returned to me. I blessed the Most High, and praised and honored the one who lives for ever. For his sovereignty is an everlasting sovereignty, and his kingdom endures from generation to generation. All the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does what he wills with the host of heaven and the inhabitants of the earth. There is no one who can stay his hand or say to him, What are you doing?
At that time my reason returned to me; and my majesty and splendour were restored to me for the glory of my kingdom. My counsellors and my lords sought me out, I was reestablished over my kingdom, and still more greatness were added to me. Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, for all his works are truth, and his ways are justice; and he is able to bring low those who walk in pride. Here ends the Reading.
The Canticle of the Turning All stand, as able, and sing the Canticle. My soul cries out with a joyful shout that the God of my heart is great, And my spirit sings of the wondrous things that you bring to the one who waits. You fixed your sight on the servant's plight, and my weakness you did not spurn, So from east to west shall my name be blest. Could the world be about to turn?
My heart shall sing of the day you bring. Let the fires of your justice burn. Wipe away all tears, For the dawn draws near, And the world is about to turn.
Though I am small, my God, my all, you work great things in me. And your mercy will last from the depths of the past to the end of the age to be. Your very name puts the proud to shame, and those who would for you yearn, You will show your might, put the strong to flight, for the world is about to turn.
My heart shall sing of the day you bring. Let the fires of your justice burn. Wipe away all tears, For the dawn draws near, And the world is about to turn.
From the halls of power to the fortress tower, not a stone will be left on stone. Let the king beware for your justice tears every tyrant from his throne. The hungry poor shall weep no more, for the food they can never earn; These are tables spread, ev'ry mouth be fed, for the world is about to turn.
My heart shall sing of the day you bring. Let the fires of your justice burn. Wipe away all tears, For the dawn draws near, And the world is about to turn.
Though the nations rage from age to age, we remember who holds us fast: God's mercy must deliver us from the conqueror's crushing grasp. This saving word that our forbears heard is the promise that holds us bound, 'Til the spear and rod be crushed by God, who is turning the world around.
My heart shall sing of the day you bring. Let the fires of your justice burn. Wipe away all tears, For the dawn draws near, And the world is about to turn.
All are seated. The 2 nd Reading (Mark 12: 1-12) A Reading from the Gospel According to Mark. Then Jesus began to speak to them in parables. A man planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a pit for the wine press, and built a watchtower; then he leased it to tenants and went to another country. When the season came, he sent a slave to the tenants to collect from them his share of the produce of the
vineyard. But they seized him, and beat him, and sent him away empty-handed. And again he sent another slave to them; this one they beat over the head and insulted. Then he sent another, and that one they killed. And so it was with many others; some they beat, and others they killed. He still had one other, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying, They will respect my son. But those tenants said to one another, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours. So they seized him, killed him,
and threw him out of the vineyard. What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants and give the vineyard to others. Have you not read this scripture: The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord s doing, and it is amazing in our eyes? When they realized he had told this parable against them, they wanted to arrest him, but they feared the crowd. So they left him and went away. Here ends the Reading
