3 Mar 4, Page 3 FATHER ANTHONY S FAITH FORMATION CORNER John 2:13-25: Stop Making My Father s House a Marketplace I hope readers of my columns remember that I mentioned more than once about the differences between the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke) and the fourth Gospel (John). The Gospel account that the Church presents to us this Sunday concerns the cleansing of the Temple, taken from John 2. In John, this incident takes place at the beginning of Jesus ministry. However, in the Synoptics, it happens toward the end, just prior to his crucifixion (see Mt 21:12-13, Mk 11:15-19, and Lk 19:45-48). Historically, perhaps the Synoptic chronology is the more reliable because such statements/threats about the destruction of the Temple from the mouth of Jesus was a major factor leading to his death and if it happened at the beginning of his ministry, that ministry would have been very short! If so, why would John place the incident at the beginning? I suppose it serves as a symbolic function for John more on that later. Anyway, Jesus cleansing of the Temple took place around the time of Passover, a high profile moment in the life of Judaism. John relates that Jesus drove out the money changers and those who sold animals in the Temple area, saying: Stop making my Father s house a marketplace. Traditionally this gesture of Jesus has been interpreted, especially within the liberal Protestant traditions, as a need to cleanse/purge the Temple of all externalism. We may recall that Protestants tend to advocate a sense of religious interiority/purity, as opposed to Catholics who worry too much about external rituals. However, modern biblical scholars (both Catholic and Protestant alike) point out that such external practices of selling animals and changing money were necessary, since Passover was a pilgrimage feast. After the Babylonian exile, Jews were scattered throughout the whole ancient world and not just centered around Jerusalem. Those coming from far distances would need to buy animals at the Temple to offer sacrifices. And the coins they brought, if those bore the images of the Roman Emperor, would have to be exchanged into a different currency because Jews could not allow human images in the Temple. Thus, the presence of money changers and sellers was not unjustified These days, I find it very disturbing that quite a few Catholics use this story of the cleansing of the Temple to make a point that nothing should be sold on church properties. I am not advocating the idea that churches should be turned into marketplaces not my point at all. What I want to say is that those who use the biblical line do not make my Father s house a marketplace do not understand the biblical/historical context of it. Their argument against selling things at church is unbiblical. Anyway, coming back to the incident about the cleansing of the Temple: if Jesus were a 19 th -century liberal Protestant, he would have cleansed the Temple of all the external impurities, in favor of a pure/internal worship. However, the biblical Jesus was doing something else: he was proclaiming the Kingdom of God. And his cleansing of the Temple served as a symbolic function. In the context of his preaching about the Kingdom, the present order including even that which was divinely sanctioned, like the Temple which was of utmost importance for the Jews would have to be destroyed and give way to the Kingdom. Thực vậy, công việc của những người buôn bán và đổi tiền là công việc đem lại lợi ích cho đền thờ và thuận tiện cho khách hành hương. Theo luật lệ qui định, thì vào những dịp lễ lớn, người Do Thái phải lên đền thờ để chu toàn bổn phận thờ kính đối với Đức Giavê. Họ từ khắp các miền trong nước cũng như ngoài nước hành hương trở về Giêrusalem. Cũng trong những dịp này, họ phải dâng lễ vật và đóng thuế cho đền thờ. Lễ vật có thể là chiên bò hay chim bồ câu, tùy khả năng tài chính của mỗi người. Bởi đó, muốn dâng cúng tiền thì phải đổi ra tiền thông dụng tại Giêrusalem. Muốn có những lễ vật thì phải có những nơi để mua sắm. Biết đâu, chính Mẹ Maria và thánh Giuse cũng đã mua ở đấy cặp chim bồ câu khi dâng tiến Chúa vào đền thờ. Xem như thế thì những kẻ mua bán đổi chác không những không có hại mà còn đem lại hoa lợi và bổng lộc cho đền thờ. Hơn nữa, mặc dù Kinh Thánh có nói đến cơn giận của Thiên Chúa, nhưng cơn giận ấy không phải sẽ được biểu lộ theo kiểu này và trong một hoàn cảnh cụ thể như thế, vì Chúa Giêsu ở mọi nơi và trong mọi lúc vẫn là Thiên Chúa của lòng từ nhân và bao dung, như lời Ngài đã từng phán: Các con hãy học cùng Ta vì Ta hiền lành và khiêm nhường. Vậy thì đâu là ý nghĩa, đâu là mục đích mà Chúa Giêsu muốn nhằm tới? Nếu suy nghĩ chúng ta sẽ thấy khi đánh đuổi phường buôn bán, Chúa Giêsu đã làm một hành động có tính cách tiên tri, một biểu tượng nhằm đưa chúng ta đến một ý nghĩa khác thâm thúy và cao xa hơn. Các nạn nhân của Ngài cũng đã hiểu được thâm ý ấy nên đã vặn hỏi Ngài: Ông có thể đưa ra dấu hiệu nào để biện minh cho hành động của ông? Và Chúa Giêsu đã đưa ra dấu hiệu để biện minh, dấu hiệu này mãi về sau các tông đồ mới hiểu được: thân xác Ngài sẽ chết, nhưng ngày thứ ba Ngài sẽ sống lại. Và như vậy, Ngài muốn nói lên rằng chính Ngài là Đấng Thiên sai, là Đấng sẽ đến để cứu chuộc dân Ngài. Với tư cách là Thiên sai, Chúa Giêsu đã bất bình với phường buôn bán và đổi chác, không phải vì hành động của họ, mà chính vì quan niệm sai lạc của họ. Họ lên đền thờ với thái độ tự mãn. Với tiền bạc, họ có thể mua được những lễ vật. Và khi đã dâng lễ vật thì họ có cảm tưởng như là đã trả nợ cho Thiên Chúa, họ thảnh thơi ra về vì đã chu toàn lề luật và có quyền ngồi chờ Thiên Chúa thi ân đáp lễ. Họ đã cậy vào uy lực của tiền tài chứ đâu có cậy nhờ vào Chúa. Dấu hiệu Chúa Giêsu đưa ra: Ngài sẽ phải chết nhưng sau ba ngày Ngài sẽ sống lại. Đó mới chính là cái uy lực thực sự mà con người phải bấu víu, phải nương tựa vào. Qua hành động của mình, Chúa Giêsu đã đưa con người từ quan niệm về uy lực trần tục tới quan niệm về uy lực của Thiên Chúa. Đó chính là một cuộc canh tân, đổi mới tận gốc rễ. Ước chi trong Mùa Chay, chúng ta hãy nhìn lại đời sống xem chúng ta đã nghĩ gì và đã thực hiện cuộc đổi mới này như thế nào. Trich TGPHN.org

Necesitamos escuchar con oídos diferentes la sabiduría de Dios y ver con nuevos ojos el poder de Dios que nos parecerá, aun en nuestra época, que es estupidez y debilidad.
