2 The Calendar St Giles of Provence (d. 710) Giles, or Aegidius, was a hermit who lived near Nimes in southern France. He lived with a companion recluse in or above the Rhône delta in the forest, on a vegetarian diet supplemented by the milk of a deer whom they had befriended. He is one of the fourteen auxiliary saints, whose prayers were thought to be particularly effective in interceding for us. He was one of the most popular saints in the Middle Ages, and there are churches and towns dedicated to him all over Europe. His reputation centres on his protection of the deer from a royal hunting party that had caught its scent. The hind ran to their shelter, and Giles took the arrow, shot by the King, that was intended for the animal. He was crippled, but the King on finding the sanctuary, gave Giles land to build a monastery, which survives in the town of Sainte-Gilles. He was abbot of the Benedictine community there for over 50 years. A later story, undisturbed by chronology, has him successfully interceding on behalf of King Charlemagne for a dreadful, but unspecified, sin. (Charlemagne was born well after Giles died.) Either because of the arrow or because he had previously recovered from lameness, he is the patron saint of cripples, and many churches dedicated to him were built on the outskirts of towns and cities so that weary, handicapped travelers could visit them easily. Several city gates are named for him or his church nearby. Other churches, including the high kirk in Edinburgh, are in the town centre. He is also the patron of blacksmiths; several churches of St. Giles are at crossroads. His feast day is September 1st. He was commemorated in the Book of Common Prayer, but has been dropped from our calendar along with other auxiliary saints whose history is not secure, and perhaps also because we have become unaccustomed to asking saints for their help. 5 A Reading From the Book of Exodus Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian; he led his flock beyond the wilderness, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of a bush; he looked, and the bush was blazing, yet it was not consumed. Then Moses said, "I must turn aside and look at this great sight, and see why the bush is not burned up." When the Lord saw that he had turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, "Moses, Moses!" And he said, "Here I am." Then he said, "Come no closer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground." He said further, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God. Then the Lord said, "I have observed the misery of my people who are in Egypt; I have heard their cry on account of their taskmasters. Indeed, I know their sufferings, and I have come down to deliver them from the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey, to the country of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.
