C: May our eyes be clear to see it. P: Today is a day of meaning. C: May our minds be open to receive it. P: Today is a day of growth. C: May we give ourselves wholeheartedly to God. CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and one another. Silence for reflection P: God of heaven and earth, C: we name before you the sin that enslaves us, the sin that wounds us and others, the sin that scars our world. Forgive us and heal us. Guard us from all evil. Give to us and the whole creation the freedom of the glory of the children of God. Amen. P: Come, all who are weary, all who carry heavy burdens. As tender as parent to child, so gentle is God to us. As high as heaven is above earth, so vast is God s love for us. As far as east is from west, so far God removes our sin, renewing our lives in Jesus Christ. C: Amen. P: When, O Lord, will we turn from self-centered living to your way of compassion? C: When, O Lord, will we truly see you in the eyes of the homeless, the hungry, the lonely, the ill and the prisoner? 4 PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray. O God, we thank you for your Son, who chose the path of suffering for the sake of the world. C: Humble us by his example, point us to the path of obedience, and give us strength to follow your commands, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen The congregation is seated. WORD EXODUS 3:1-15 The first reading is taken from the 3 rd chapter of Exodus. Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian; he led his flock beyond the wilderness, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2 There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of a bush; he looked, and the bush was blazing, yet it was not consumed. 3 Then Moses said, I must turn aside and look at this great sight, and see why the bush is not burned up. 4 When the Lord saw that he had turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, Moses, Moses! And he said, Here I am. 5 Then he said, Come no closer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground. 6 He said further, I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God. 7 Then the Lord said, I have observed the misery of my people who are in Egypt; I have heard their cry on account of their taskmasters. Indeed, I know their sufferings, 8 and I have come down to deliver them from the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey, to the country of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 9 The cry of the Israelites has now come to me; I have also seen how the Egyptians oppress them. 10 So come, I will send you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt. 11 But Moses said to God, Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and bring the Israelites out of Egypt? 12 He said, I will be with you; and this shall be the sign for you that it is I who sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God on this mountain. 13 But Moses said to God, If I come to the Israelites and say to them, The God of your ancestors has sent me to you, and they ask me, What is his name? what shall I say to them? 14 God said to Moses, I AM WHO I AM. He said further, Thus you shall say to the Israelites, I AM has 4

5 sent me to you. 15 God also said to Moses, Thus you shall say to the Israelites, The Lord, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you : This is my name forever, and this my title for all generations. The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Pharaoh, Pharaoh sung to the tune Louie, Louie Chorus: Verse 1: Pharaoh, Pharaoh, Oh baby Let my people go! Huh Yeah yeah yeah, yea...ah! Pharaoh, Pharaoh. Oh baby Let my people go! Huh Well a burnin' bush said the other day that I should go to Egypt s Pharaoh and say... Gotta get my people out of your hands... and lead them all to the promised land. I said,.. (Chorus) Verse 2: Verse 3: Verse 4: Well me and and my people are goin' to the Red Sea, cause Pharaoh's army comin' after me. I took my staff, - stuck it in the sand, and all of God's people walked on dry land. Singing (Chorus) Well, Pharaoh's army was a following' too. So what do you think that I should do?... I raised my rod and cleared my throat and all of Pharaoh's army did the dead man's float. And we all sang.. (Chorus) Well, here s two lessons - from this here tale. Pharaoh should've know that chariots don't sail. And the other lesson is an easy groove. when God says, "Get going!" - you had better move We re Singing. PSALM 26: The Message 5

6 L: We will read Psalm 26 responsively by half verse. 1 Clear my name, God; I've kept an honest shop. C: I've thrown in my lot with you, God, and I'm not budging. L: 2 Examine me, God, from head to foot, order your battery of tests. C: Make sure I'm fit inside and out L: 3 so I never lose sight of your love, C: but keep in step with you, never missing a beat. L: 4 I don't hang out with tricksters, C: I don't pal around with thugs; L: 5 I hate that pack of gangsters, C: I don't deal with double-dealers. L: 6 I scrub my hands with purest soap, C: then join hands with the others in the great circle, dancing around your altar, God, L: 7 singing God-songs at the top of my lungs, C: telling God-stories. L: 8 God, I love living with you; C: your house glows with your glory ROMANS 12:9-21 The second reading is from the 12 th chapter of Paul s letter to the Romans. Paul wrote: 9 Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; 10 love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. 11 Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. 12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. 13 Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers. 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. 17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. 18 If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God; for it is written, Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord. 20 No, if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads. 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. 7 Halle, Halle, Hallelujah ELW #172 MATTHEW 16:21-28 The Gospel according to Matthew, the 16 th chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. Matthew wrote: 21 From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and undergo great suffering at the hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. 22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, God forbid it, Lord! This must never happen to you. 23 But he turned and said to Peter, Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; for you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things. 24 Then Jesus told his disciples, If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 25 For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life? 27 For the Son of Man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay everyone for what has been done. 28 Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom. 9 RESPONSE TO THE WORD The congregation stands AFFIRMATION OF FAITH P: Let us join our voices together in an affirmation of faith. C: We believe in God, whose love we know in the beauty of his world, in daily bread, in the kindness of human hearts, and most clearly in Jesus of Nazareth. We believe that Jesus is the Christ, whose touch of grace makes our eyes to see, our ears to hear, strengthens us to do all things in him, and delivers us from death to life. We believe in the Holy Spirit in whose power there is peace, in whose presence there is joy, and in whose promise we dare to be more. Amen. PRAYERS P: Open to the gifts of the Holy Spirit, we pray for the church, the world, and all of God s creation. A brief silence. P: We pray for the church and its mission. Make your church ready to lose its life for your sake. Unite it in service, sustain it in suffering, and let its love for others be genuine. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: We pray for the earth and its well-being. Make us mindful of the gifts you have labored to give us, and inspire us to commit ourselves to their care. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: We pray for the nations and their leaders. Overcome evil with good. Show us how to live peaceably with all. Teach us how to love our enemies. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. 9

Move us to persevere in prayer, to extend hospitality to strangers, to rejoice with those who rejoice, and to weep with those who weep. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: Alpha and Omega, we give thanks for all the saints who now rest from their labors. Keep us in union with them until we are joined around your throne. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray. Holy God, mighty Lord, gracious Father: Endless is your mercy and eternal your reign. You have filled all creation with light and life; heaven and earth are full of your glory. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people. Do this in remembrance of me. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink of this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. LORD S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray: C: Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
