1 Saint Mark s episcopal cadral The Holy Eucharist fourth sunday in lent March 11, :00 am

2 Newcomers and visitors, community Saint Mark s welcomes you. We hope that you will feel at home in this place and in this liturgy. Ushers are available during liturgy as well as greeters and clergy following, should you have any questions or concerns. Mors are most welcome to breastfeed ir infants during service. Children any age are always welcome at Saint Mark s liturgies, although child care during services is available in Child Care Center, now located in St. Nicholas Building to north Cadral; ask an usher to direct you. As is our custom every six to eight weeks, fixed portions our celebration Eucharist Kyrie, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei are sung today by choir, inviting congregation into a more contemplative approach to prayers and praises in our Sunday morning liturgy. Today Cadral Choir fers selections from Missa Rigensis (The Mass Riga) by Uģis Prauliņš (b. 1957), a contemporary Latvian composer noted for his powerful and idiosyncratic voice in a variety genres. During period Soviet rule in Latvia, Prauliņš performed with several rock bands, and founded influential prog rock group Vecās mājas [ Old houses ] in late 1980s. In recent years, he has written music for films, ballet, symphony orchestras and many choral ensembles. He was made an Officer Order Three Stars by Latvian government in November Missa Rigensis was written in 2002 for choir men and boys Riga s Luran cadral, in which he sang as a child. The Mass is notable for way music moves freely between a vast range musical languages, while always remaining clearly in Prauliņš s own individual voice. The Mass references (and sometimes quotes directly from) popular music, Renaissance polyphony, Orthodox chant, folk music, 20th-century avant-garde, and more without ever sounding like ironic pastiche. Some movements choral masses can be quite long. Our prayer and praise are sung by choir but we are also active participants and we indicate that by standing. However, please feel free to sit if you need to during longer mass movements. As part our effort to serve those who cannot attend worship, this service will be livestreamed on internet. If this raises concern for you, we encourage attendance at one our or services each Sunday which are not livestreamed 8 am, 9 am, 7 pm, and 9:30 pm. We are grateful for your presence and participation in this community. Out respect for liturgy we are about to celebrate, please turn f all cell phones and audible devices. Please, no photography during liturgy. The Reverend Canon Nancy Ross, Associate to Rector, Presider The Very Reverend Steven L. 4 THE LITURGY OF THE WORD reading Numbers 21:4 9 From Mount Hor Israelites set out by way to Red Sea, to go around land Edom; but people became impatient on way. The people spoke against God and against Moses, Why have you brought us up out Egypt to die in wilderness? For re is no food and no water, and we detest this miserable food. Then Lord sent poisonous serpents among people, and y bit people, so that many Israelites died. The people came to Moses and said, We have sinned by speaking against Lord and against you; pray to Lord to take away serpents from us. So Moses prayed for people. And Lord said to Moses, Make a poisonous serpent, and set it on a pole; and everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live. So Moses made a serpent bronze, and put it upon a pole; and whenever a serpent bit someone, that person would look at serpent bronze and live. Reader Hear what Spirit is saying to God s people. 6 holy gospel John 3:14 21 Priest The Holy Gospel our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Assembly Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus said, Just as Moses lifted up serpent in wilderness, so must Son Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send Son into world to condemn world, but in order that world might be saved through him. Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because y have not believed in name only Son God. And this is judgment, that light has come into world, and people loved darkness rar than light because ir deeds were evil. For all who do evil hate light and do not come to light, so that ir deeds may not be exposed. But those who do what is true come to light, so that it may be clearly seen that ir deeds have been done in God. Priest The Gospel Lord. Assembly Praise to you, Lord Christ. sermon The Very Reverend Steven L. Thomason 6
